I need Joe, where is Joe when you need him?

@GayotFow have you tried a coffee shop?

@Willeke the closest I ever got to being run over was when I was pushing my bike on a marked street crossing and a police car (not even using sirens) took a right turn at high speed, it was very close.

@hippietrail was hoping for you to answer that. +1 from me, just waiting a bit longer for more answer until I accept.

travel.stackexchange.com/questions/77796/… so why the unsourced answer is accepted while mine is sourced?

Hey all I'm back!
Ankur, could you go ahead and delete the tag then? I presume this is "word of god" from the mods so there's no more need to discuss this matter. @hippietrail If the mods are inactive let's go ahead and do a manual cleanup — JonathanReez 15 hours ago
So about the above
Can someone help me with a community effort to delete the tag?

11:09 AM
@chx ungood, bizarre!

Yesterday StackOverflow has proven again what an incredible learning resource it is
While I am generally not bad with sane programming languages, awk is bizarre and from time to time I need to ask SO to elevate my awk-fu and they always come through.

@AnkurBanerjee Oh, yeah, they're copied there.

The wording is a bit weird yeah

I'm just used to them being cleared from the question itself, also, as in "moved".

the automated message says "moved" when it should say copied

Anyway, not saying they should be moved. I like it this way.
Exactly.
It gives people a hint that if they want to continue an extended discussion, they should do it in chat.
I mean, copying without clearing them does that, so it's still useful.

I've suggested a dupe to this question but apparently people have voted to leave open without leaving a comment? Could I get some more looks, either voting to close or giving some feedback as to why it merits to be a question in itself?

@mts When questions are reviewed in the queue for close / open via this link travel.stackexchange.com/review
It doesn't give the option to leave a comment directly through that process - it's meant for quick reviews
so yes it's possible that people clicked Leave Open without leaving a comment

mts
thanks but actually you can comment there (and I often do) before giving your vote. Alternatively users can always go back in their browser and such find the question again.
Of course nobody is obliged to, just in this case I feel like it is a dupe, otherwise I'd set up a more general canonical.

true, it's best form to comment - I'd recommend chat here actually, since otherwise the comments section just devolves into an extended chat

mts
cheers :)
That being said, what is good form about setting up canonicals? E.g. I would like to set up a "how can I find out whether I need a transit visa in south korea?" canonical like we have for the UK, since we get a lot of more specific questions that then turn out not exact duplicates... but is this OK?

12:37 PM
Generally we try to look at volumes, i.e., UK visas and Schengen we tend to get a LOT of very similar / dupe like questions. (There's a meta discussion going about forming a Community Wiki for them.)
For say South Korea, would be good to monitor if we're getting a high volume of similar queries.
Travel.SE / SE in general is a QA site first rather than a wiki
so it's often last resort to have Community Wikis

Thanks. I think the meta CW for Schengen was my suggestion, I am not aware of anything similar for UK yet, but I'm sure it could be very helpful.

1:13 PM
hello homies

Hello hippietrail!

where ya been @AnkurBanerjee?

Just got back from Nepal!

nice one. did you have some momos?

Momos and a lot of spicy sauce I can't handle

1:24 PM
grow some balls @AnkurBanerjee d-;
no princes murdered the royal family while you were there this time I hope

holiday over :( back to work

work over (-: back to holiday ... well for me ... about 3.5 weeks ago

hahahahaha
how's Taiwan?

@hippietrail I didn't realise you actually worked

taiwan is very interesting! it should be a famous foodie destination if nothing else
but also great for sinophiles and asiaphiles to compare cultures both traditional and pop
friendly people. way way too easy to hitchhike. too freakin hot so far.
@Berwyn: yeah me too but for tax purposes that's apparently the correct word

1:37 PM
the food markets are amazing!
I almost missed a flight once trying to find snake

i almost stood on a snake one night in thailand near the end of my previous trip

A snake fell on my missus's head in Italy. She wasn't very happy about it

a snake scared me and my italian travel companions when visiting a forgotten unesco site in bulgaria a few years back

I'm not sure if snakes are supposed to be dangerous in Italy or not
I've never seen one in real life

i might've asked a question about the one in bulgaria to find out if it was dangerous
i saw warning signs for snakes in northern taiwan but didn't actually see even a dead snake yet
anyone here who can translate chinese?

2:06 PM
google translate app?
That's what I used with some success in China

can't translate photos
chinese is difficult to type if you can't already read it
oh i have no device on which that app will run

2:23 PM
Google Translate can translate photos as well

2:34 PM
> Sorry, the page you requested contains a file type (image/jpeg) we are unable to translate.
maybe the app. not the website.
but please translate it for me if you can get it to work

2:47 PM
Yeah, you just point it at something like say a menu, and it translates it
with some languages it does it in real time and updates the image with the translation as you pan across a sign or something
can be quite spooky. doesn't (yet) work with chinese though

yeah no phone. a "local" friend was using some similar app in taipei but just to get info on the characters since she speaks chinese but it's not her first language
i have ms translate app on my windows tablet and it's rubbish. doesn't support traditional chinese for OCR, only works with an internet connection, does terrible job even if you have a connection.

yeah, but that's ms, what would you expect?

i expected rubbish. but hey google doesn't even have an offering and it does have offline ability for some languages and if you can enter text it does OK.

doesn't have an offering?
what's google translate? (admittedly they badged it)

for windows tablets?
i don't have any other tablets or phones, just the one i mentioned

3:03 PM
oh, dunno. I don't do windows

it's what i can afford. linux never gets nice things like real time OCR from the camera apps
might buy a cheapo android phone in china just to be able to use such apps. we'll see coz i still hate phones.

3:26 PM
I use linux on my laptops and android on my phones. seem to get enough functionality out of the two of them

i like linux but there's certain things that never get decent apps. well sometimes there's something technically superior but much harder to use. depends.
i've brought my damaged found macbook to get repaired in china. apparently my current windows netbook is a nightmare to install linux on - last time i checked anyway.

yeah certain netbooks are due to drivers and stuff.

@hippietrail I also saw that vote as "unclear", baffling me as well, if it were actually closed at least one could see who it was ;)
my Chinese is nowhere near good enough to translate that KTV thingy

3:49 PM
hehe no worries @mts

@CMaster @Berwyn @others, put a good answer in this one
3
Q: Visa refused once under 320(A), I want to re-apply again

Ra ChI got one refusal under 320 (7A) due to wrong information provided by other party. Please check the below refusal letter. The signatory of one document (Leave approval letter from my then employer) denied that they provided the letter though she did. I don’t know why she denied giving the letter....

I am TRYING to encourage people to put answers in these types of questions. TRYING! You lads can help
@hippietrail regarding more terminology questions, these bring lots of visitors and help distinguish TSE from crap sites. I hope you will do dozens more of them.
2
@pnuts @phoog you guys can put in great answers just by doing it, so please indulge

6:17 PM
@GayotFow, the problem with writing answers to this kind of questions it that they are technical and it is not easy to give a good answer unless you know what you are talking about. Most of use do not know enough about it.

6:34 PM
@Willeke I promise that enough knowledge has been absorbed simply from being on TSE. Promise :)

not by me, not for TSE. I use that knowledge on Yahoo answers, as training.

6:58 PM
• @Gayot I'm tending to wanting to have nothing to do with UK visa refusals. They were very interesting for a while and, for as long as you can maintain your amazing stamina I very much appreciate all your As.
• However the one you show above absolutely stinks of fraud of some kind (even if only moonlighting) and I am not motivated to help the perpetrator/victim. I will champion justice where I can but the vast majority of refusals I've seen here seem v. sound. The applicants are blatant liars and/or (about equally unwelcome to me in my country) of negative IQ. Coaching them does not suit me.

7:27 PM
I just deleted an +3 answer, as there are a few which are much better and now I can get that badge. :D

7:51 PM
@pnuts As long as we're confessing, I will fess up too. I am in the extremely rare position of voting Brext in one week, and for Trump in the NJ primary the next week, and for Я́блоко the week after that!!!
@Willeke Good work!

1 hour later…
9:22 PM
@Willeke I have voted to undelete it, so now you can get your badge and +3 votes :) I think.....
