Q: New custom close reason: Future Works

Rand al'ThorLast year (2020) saw some changes to the question closure system across the SE network. These included changing the text saying "off-topic" in custom close reasons to "a community-specific reason", which inspired the SFF community to reach a consensus to create a new custom close reason for our w...

user73910I remember watching a 3D animated movie a long time ago. Also, not all questions about future works are of topic. Some can be answered before the release, because it is not answered by the release itself but rather from other sources. "Will Joe Actor feature in Next Big Instalment of Franchise?" can probably be answered before release and even questions about the contents can be answered if anyone involved in the production has answered that in an interview. — SQB 18 mins ago
@SQB good point, but OTOH we can't use "the answer is unknown until a future release" as the criterion either, since it's OK to ask a question where the answer is "we don't know" if it can be answered in that way based on existing canon.
Give me a while to heat up my wordsmithing forge.

> This question is about future works. Any answers would be purely speculative, since the question concerns some as yet unreleased material and cannot be resolved until its release. Note that this close reason does not apply if an answer can be written based on already released works. For more details, see Should questions about future works be closed? and What are future works?.
How's that?

@Randal'Thor how about 'already released information about works*, which covers (released) interviews (etc) about future (unreleased) works?
@Randal'Thor there's a book series (from the start of their writing career) where the third book is in an unpublished limbo, and I have been trying to find out why it's unpublished... I found a facebook post by the author saying his publisher doesn't like the book given their more recent works.... would that be future works?
I'm thinking not?
> This question is about aspects of a future work. Any answers would be purely speculative, since the question concerns some as yet unreleased material and cannot be resolved until its release. too long then I guess

12:45 PM
@SQB another point regarding your comment: answers shouldn't determine whether a question is on/off topic. If someone asks "will Joe Actor feature in Next Instalment", we shouldn't need to go and check whether the cast has been announced yet (essentially answering the question) in order to know whether that's on-topic or not.
I don't usually say this, but I'm tempted to err on the side of closing such questions, reopening them if someone proves the answer is known, in the same way as we'd reopen if the work gets released.
@AncientSwordRage excellent idea, or just "already released information" because character count.
@AncientSwordRage No, I don't think "why hasn't Future Instalment been published" would be future works. It might be a time-sensitive question, where answers would become obsolete later, but it's about the current state of affairs, not what will be known after publication.

good to know on both parts Rand :D

@Randal'Thor looks good.
(Sorry, was AFK for a bit).
@Randal'Thor I... don't know. The same goes for some of the story IDs that seem too vague, until someone pipes up and knows exactly what OP is on about, solely on one tiny detail.
Also, what I mean is the difference between "this will (likely) be in the film/book/WoSFaF" vs "this is general information that is already known from interviews".
And yes, that does depend on the answers.
But I agree it's hard to pin down.

Q: Manga about a powerful demon who kills other demon kings to make him weaker

Long_NgVThe manga is about the journey of a powerful demon. He has to kill other demon kings to fulfil his promise with his lover (maybe I'm wrong). However, for each demon king he kills, this demon becomes weaker. He even has a watch to check how many demon kings are left (12 demon kings).

Q: A book from the 80s/90s with a stage magician and a couple women

MindxingI'm sorry but my memory is quite spotty on this but I'm obsessed with trying to remember this book. I don't remember the author or title at all. 6:37 PM
@Mithical Did you just win an election?
Congratulations.

About 3.5 years ago.

@NapoleonWilson That's weird. It must be site bug, because it shows them as having been appointed today.
Maybe other moderators have been re-appointed?

More a bug in SE's recording diligence. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson And now I just noticed that on our site, moderators only have a year listed, but on Literature, they have the year, day, and month listed.
I sense a connection.
I bet it is a beta site bug.
Look, Politics also has year, day, and month.

@Adamant I was reinstated upon request after having stepped down a while ago.

6:45 PM
@Adamant Maybe it turns out Mithical won the election on SciFi all those years ago, too, but the system never registered it.

@Mithical That makes sense. What about the differences between the beta sites and the main sites? Is that a feature, or a bug?

(And no, I didn't win an election on Lit, I was picked as a pro-tem mod by the CMs, towards the end of the system working that way.)

Elected by the CMs then.

@Adamant Beta sites technically have pro tem moderators, who are considered "appointed" rather than elected. Appointed mods show the exact date rather than a year; dunno why.

My guess is that if a site is expected to last a long time, a year is sufficiently specific.

6:47 PM
(And the appointment date will be changed to the original date (which is in 2017), just waiting on a dev to get around to it.)

Oh.
I also forgot that Gallifreyan wasn't part of da OG gang.

@NapoleonWilson There still could be a bug...the date format could be a bug.

@Adamant It is. There aren't 26 months in a year. But it's hard to get the Usonians to fix that bug.

@NapoleonWilson 26 months?

@NapoleonWilson Unfortunately, I'm the only one of the original Lit mods who even has an account anymore. :(

6:51 PM
@NapoleonWilson Oh, you mean 30 months? You do not like the month/date format, I suppose.
I admit that it is less logical.

@Mithical I can sympathize

@AncientSwordRage Heh.
It is true of this site as well, I guess.
Still, if you think of the month/day/year format as providing the most useful information first, it makes sense.

Because you randomly made up the month as the "most useful information"? ;-)

@NapoleonWilson No, because farmers care more about whether it is August or September than about whether it is August 9 or 10.
Months are much more relevant to planting and harvesting than days or years.
Of the three chunks of time, they are the most useful for agriculture.

Then you forgot to add a socio-historical qualification to your explanation. But yes, kind of, I guess.

6:56 PM
I suspect that giving hours before minutes has a similar justification.

7:07 PM
ISO-8601 is the only true date format, don't @ me.
