Q: Sci-Fi - House get's transported to space with brothers (possibly older sister) in it

Android Won KenobiFrom what little I remember of the movie and book, there was essentially a pair of brothers(one short and fat, the other taller and leaner) whose house gets transported to space( somehow ), and they survive until an astronaut comes and saves them. In the movie adaption, there was also an older si...

Q: Short Story (Maybe Bradbury) That Involves a Cloud or Nebula Which Traps Radio Waves

vol.2I remember reading this in maybe the late 1980s, and I have a strong inclination that it was Bradbury. I remember checking out a Bradbury collection and reading a bunch of those stories around that time. I'm sure I read "A Sound of Thunder," though I looked at the stories in Golden Apples of the ...

Q: Did Jyn didn't believe Rebellion exist till now?

Jason NevilleCaptain Andor speaks to Jyn: Andor: We don't all have the luxury of deciding... when and where we want to care about something. Suddenly the Rebellion is real for you. Some of us live it. I've been in this fight since I was 6 years old. Did Jyn didn't believe Rebellion exist till now?

Q: The different names of Mordor

RighterWhile reading LOTR, I got confused with the geography and different names of Mordor. Can anyone tell me the difference between these? (i.e. which names are from which language? Which of these correspond to which places?) Mordor Barad-dûr Osgalioth Gorgoroth Udûn Minas Morgul

@DavidW I wasn't objecting to flotilla, just thinking out loud. Fleet is something I hadn't thought of :D

Q: Is the galactic core full of stars?

Zab ZonkIt's a common trope in science fiction that the galactic core is so full of stars to be blindingly bright, even when seen through the common optical filters installed on starships. And, by the same trope, these stars are so close to one another that they form systems with two, three or even more ...

Q: Space-themed cartoon film seen on TV in the mid-80's with a pair of blobby telepathic aliens and relativistic aging

DavoI'm looking for a cartoon space fantasy film that I saw on TV somewhere between 1985-1988. I think it was a one-off and not a series. I only have sketchy fragments and never got the whole story line, but it involved some form of space travel, quite a few people travelling onboard the vessel, with...

Q: What made Qui-Gon Jinn really believe that Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one?

Bingo MehndraWe all know from "The Phantom Menace" that, about to die, Qui-Gon Jinn asked Obi-Wan to promise him to train Anankin because he believed the boy was the chosen one; the one who would bring balance to the Force. We also know that Qui-Gon Jinn told to Mace Windu and Yoda that Anakin's cells had the...

Q: Novel with a young boy whose father creates custom pets including a "Godzilla" and a mammoth

FuzzyBootsTip of my tongue, this was a hardback book, marketed as science fiction, that I read in the late 1980s to early 1990s in Ashland, KY in English. The protagonist is a teenage boy on another planet whose father does bioengineering, designing custom pets. The protagonist's mother was deceased at the...

@DavidW It occurred to me that, in modern US navy parlance, fleet refers to all navy ships, or the entire navy in a given administrative area, Pacific Fleet for example. Showing again how people use the same word to mean slightly different things. We won't even go into all the ways that astronomers re-use the word aperture.
The United States Pacific Fleet (USPACFLT) is a theater-level component command of the United States Navy, located in the Pacific Ocean. It provides naval forces to the Indo-Pacific Command. Fleet headquarters is at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, with large secondary facilities at North Island, San Diego Bay on the Mainland. == Origins == A Pacific Fleet was created in 1907 when the Asiatic Squadron and the Pacific Squadron were combined. In 1910, the ships of the First Squadron were organized back into a separate Asiatic Fleet. The General Order 94 of 6 December 1922 organized the United...

@Donald.McLean I'm actually most familiar with the usage of "fleet" as in your second example, like the Home Fleet of the wartime UK, the US Mediterranean fleet (nominally the 6th Fleet, IIRC) or the Russian-Soviet-Russian Baltic Fleet.

@DavidW Small "f" versus big "F".

Q: Did Umbridge have anything to say about Snape bullying Neville in Order of the Phoenix?

Alex DownsWe know that Snape bullied Neville during Potions, hence why Neville’s Boggart was Snape in Prisoner of Azkaban. However, in Order of the Phoenix, Dolores Umbridge (the DADA teacher) became High Inquisitor, inspecting classes, including Snape’s. Did Umbridge witness Snape’s bullying Neville durin...

Q: 1980's - Lunar Police Procedural Novel(s)

Lee EckhardtProbably paperback originals, definitely published during the 1980s. American author. At least two volumes (I only read the first), possibly more. The time is the near future and the Moon has been colonized. There is a Lunar police force & the main characters are a pair of hard-boiled detectives ...
