Q: Short story about an astronaut who writes to his partner on Earth and tries to warn her of her demise

SciFiFanThis was a short story published before 2010, in the magazine Analog I think. The premise was that a male astronaut sends messages to his female partner back on Earth. She writes to him too. But because of the nature of light travel he's essentially living in the future. He knows about Earth even...

Q: Star Trek TOS aliens won’t fight

user136098Trying to recall the episode where at the end, Kirk et al confronted the aliens they were trying to defend. The aliens refused to fight for themselves for some philosophical reason. Any ideas?

@AncientSwordRage That's big-picture thinking that is.

Q: Is there a name for the genre of fiction in which problems are solved by the main character "just being special"?

cdustonThere is a trend in some science fiction / fantasy art (literature, TV, movies, etc) to make main characters special in some deep way, and then use their special qualities to solve the major conflicts in the story. The prototype for me of this is Anakin Skywalker, but there are many other example...

Uh wow. I guess I really touched a nerve. But I don't want to get into a pointless argument, so I'm not replying. I could debate the comments, but I just don't feel like it.

Q: Story about pilot fighting aliens

TheoryThis story starts with a semi-retired military pilot on patrol with a lizard-like alien friend. The enemies are also human and can control swarms of ships using a single pilot. He is forced to unite with one of the human enemies top pilots in order to face an alien invasion. The aliens fly large,...

Q: In the first Matrix film, would Neo have died if Cypher had unplugged him like the other crew members?

yugWe already know that the One cannot die in the matrix so he can fulfill his purpose (source: M1 ending and M2), meaning the matrix doesn't "delete" his mind as with a normal red/blue pill. Also more tentatively, from the third movie we know that the One has the ability to materialize his mind in ...

@Randal'Thor Even if Ant-Man was inspired by that, the question appears to be really overthinking it in my opinion

@TheLethalCarrot Well, there's a lot of detail and background in the question which you could argue isn't strictly necessary (note the OP's username ;-) ) But it's not exactly a stretch to wonder if Marvel characters could be partly inspired by classical mythology, now is it?

I mean more all the extra detail than that, aye
Myrmidions exist in Marvel now as well

The help centre does encourage well-researched questions ...

Of course it does and I'm not saying it isn't well researched, but well researched doesn't mean the research is necassary
Or rather necessary to put in the question

1:29 PM
@TheLethalCarrot If terminology isn't consistent, that's not the OP's fault. Some of the answers given don't fit all that well either. I don't really understand why this question was closed as opinion-based - it seems a valid question about terminology. One might argue that it's not specifically about SF/F (in which case I can migrate it to Literature), but I haven't seen close-voters making that argument. — Rand al'Thor ♦ 16 secs ago
Thoughts on this question?

It seems to be somewhat opinion-based/too broad as mentioned in my comment. Though I agree somewhat that it's also somewhat not really on topic but also kind of on topic

Why OP/TB? Just because several different terms have been used to describe the same / similar tropes?

Well yeah, kinda... if several terms all fit the description how do you chose which is correct?

Well then a good answer would give a good overview of the possible terms that might fit, and how close they are to what the OP's talking about.

This comes back to the discussion the other week/month about wanting more cross-work questions. How do you draw the line between too broad and fine? To me this trends into too broad territory

1:41 PM
I dunno, maybe we should have a new meta discussion about it.
But having multiple possible answers doesn't necessarily make a question too broad.
(Or just migrate all the interesting cross-work questions to get expert answers on Lit if they get closed here. But I'd rather support them where they are if possible. We do have some genre experts here too.)

Well no, of course not. A meta discussion might be worthwhile in my opinion even if it's just something to point to. Though, personally, I don't know where the line should be drawn on these cross-work type questions and sounds like it'd be ahrd thing to define
Unless of course you just say all cross-work questions are allowed but that sounds like the wrong idea to me

Oh, I don't think we can say all anything are allowed. Someone could ask for random opinions about any given topic and we'd close it.
But asking about the name of a trope or device should be OK if there's a sufficiently clear description of it.
With this question, is the problem that people feel the description is too vague, or that the description is clear but there's more than one possible answer?
The first of those I could get behind as a reason to close (regardless of whether or not it applies to this particular question), the second not really.

1:58 PM
The description is clear but it covers quite a lot of sub tropes which leads to a lot of answers really being correctly, even a few high level tropes really fitting the bill

I still think the OP is, even if not clearly, trying to distinguish an everyman hero from a superman hero. Frodo is (canonically, iirc) an everyman. The Pevensie kids aren't special before they have their adventure.
And no matter what some people are trying to miscast it as, it's not a fantasy vs. SF thing either. In addition to the above, many of Glen Cook's characters, McKillip's characters, even (or especially) Pratchett's characters, etc. are not intrinsically special.
On the flip side, Divergent and Maze Runner are notionally SF, but their heroes are special because of who they were born as, not what they do.

Q: Was Jedi robe a uniform during the clone wars?

VienLaIn a discussion I had about the possibility Jedi commiting war crimes on the grounds of being non-uniformed combatants with concealed weapon. Q: How well can a Mandalorian see?

Peter MGiven the small amount of see-through1 material in a Mandalorian helmet, how well does a Mandalorian actually see out of one? By initial looks these helmets have a severely restricted field of view. Is the field of view purely optical, or is there any sort of vision enhancing technology (a la I...

Q: I'm looking for a book series that contains magical auras

OvrborredTake everything I say below with a grain of salt, it's been roughly 5 years (2013-2016?) since I read the series, so I've probably got some of the details wrong. I don't know how old the book series is, nor any of the covers' appearances or anything about the title, and I don't think I finished t...

Scoops Ahoy was the mall ice cream place in Stranger Things
Which would actually be on-topic - unlike Chips Ahoy, which are merely tasty.

@Donald.McLean I got the reference; what I meant by not being sufficiently on-trend is that it wasn't the association that came to mind.
Though I might dispute cookies not being on-topic. After all, I'm told that the Dark side has cookies.

The light side will also have cookies, even if I have to make them myself.
