Q: Anybody recognize this Halloween special from 84 or 85?

MichaelFor years, I have been trying to track down information about a program I saw around Halloween time. This was probably a two-hour special, featuring four separate stories about 20 minutes in length, and held together by a host who wandered around a party in a posh hotel. The first three stories w...

Q: Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid (1975), Old bird movie

One of them was about why some birds are grey and some are very colorful. In the movie, the birds live under a rainbow which is attacked by bugs. The ones...

Q: YA Fiction Series: Color-coded magic system and protagonist kills brother at high school

PipLikely written in the last 5-10 years, this is a YA fiction/low fantasy series mainly set in a high school and then college-like environment. There were some kind of arena fights at the school and the competition might have included students at other schools. At some point, the protagonist gains ...

Q: Why did Tolkien take such extreme offense to the original Swedish translation of The Lord of the Rings?

Bilbo SeckerI may be mistaken, but allegedly, Tolkien really took great offense to the first (and only, during his entire lifetime and decades beyond) Swedish translation of The Lord of the Rings. He called the person responsible for it "conceited" and basically seemed to strongly dislike, if not hate, him. ...

Q: Rifle usage in Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom

DannyMcGIn one of the John Carter Barsoom books (I'm going by memory here, I still own five and I've unsuccessfully skimmed through them looking for this statement) there is mention made of the exceedingly long rifles used by one of the Green martian clans. They are capable of hitting a target from 200 m...

Q: Is there an in-universe reason why so many people in Altered Carbon are following late 20th/early 21st century fashion?

Alex KinmanGiven that Altered Carbon happens several centuries in the future, why do so many people wear clothes that look very close to, or identical to, late 20th century/early 21st century styles? Out-of-universe, it's part of the cyberpunk aesthetic, but is there an in-universe reason?

Q: In the comics is Blade known to have a particular accent?

K MoIn the main Marvel comics continuity (Universe 616), Blade's background is that he was born and raised in Soho London, yet in all the other media (movies, live action TV show, cartoons) I have seen him in, he is never portrayed with an English accent. Admittedly his back story has been tweaked f...

Q: Is Enterprise-J and Temporal Agent civilization no longer in existence in the future?

Umbrella CorporationAccording to this StarTrek.com article: The Enterprise-J deserves a lot of credit. It is one of the ships that helped destroy the galactic threat of the Sphere-Builders in the Battle of Procyon V. The only problem is this timeline may have never come to pass since Captain Jonathan Archer denied ...

Q: Book about colonists on a new planet where it rains acid

userI read a book maybe 20 years ago about a colony ship that arrived at a new planet and quickly went down to live on the surface. Some kind of acid rain came, killing several colonists. Y'know, I'm becoming convinced that the feeds in the room are, in fact, disruptive to conversations.
I know, I know, I can turn them off. But that only works for me.
Anyone else dropping by would need to also know to turn them off in order to be able to follow any ongoing conversations. And (a) it isn't obvious to people that they should do that and (b) they have to figure out how to do it.
Compared to another room where there aren't any feeds, the level of engagement appears to be higher there, even though there are fewer total people. And while sporadic (people in different time zones), the conversations do continue even from one day to the next.

Pciking a point where the room wasn't silent for a day would probably lend this analysis a little more practical evidence. ;-)

Hrm. Finding a point like that in the past couple of weeks might be tricky...

...
@CerealBot How...irreverent! Good luck widdat. ;-)

I mean I asked a question of the room on Friday, and didn't get a response for nearly a day...
Okay, maybe it wasn't a good question; my point is that there was a conversational starter there, and nobody picked it up.

@DavidW And you think you'd gotten one earlier? (Also, this kinda contradicts people being unable to follow conversations over days.) ;-)
Let me scroll over the feeds messages to find that question. ;-)
@DavidW I don't know what on earth a magic roundabout is.

5:51 PM
There's a difference between one person managing to see it and responding, and it being plainly in sight to all and sundry.
Apparently it's magic. :)

(Which apparently wasn't a joke as I originally guessed.) ;-)

It's apparently also not about a roundabout, at least as I know them.
In my world, a roundabout is for bicycles to circulate while frantically dodging erratic autos and raging HGVs.

6:06 PM
Why would you circulate in a roundabout?

I think I was trying to be humorous, and "orbit" implied far more speed than I'd ever reasonably achieve. :)

I figured. But I also assumed like every good joke it was based on a grain of truth.

6:23 PM
Well I would normally use "circling" a roundabout; "circulate" was similar but implied a certain amount of aimlessness which would stand in contrast to the angry drivers (and likely incite them as well).

I was primarily surprised at the idea of genuinely completing circles as that seems to annull the entire purpose for entiring the roundabout in the first place. Circling would suggest the same practice (unless it tries to propagate the idea of somehow circling it externally as a predator circles its prey, which would be an interesting approach, too).

6:38 PM
I hadn't thought about it that way.
I suppose we "arc" through a roundabout.
But my Sprachgefühl doesn't like that for some reason.
It sounds... I don't know; too ballistic?

Q: Are the spirits of old cycle Avatars dead?

DevIf Korra started a new cycle does that mean we can never see Aang's spirit again even if any new story comes up except in flashbacks? Or any of the other avatars of old cycle. @Marvin Every time I think I'll try to replicate Jenayah's magic and search for the answer, I end up finding dozens of pages of really-bad-looking self-published dreck. :-P

@Jenayah Lol. I can't say it makes me feel better, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. :)

Q: What does "auto-wash" actually do?

CascabelRecently, I needed a washer mechanic to come to my home to clean out the lines. He told us that we need to do an... auto-wash ...from time-to-time to avoid problems, and that made me wonder about a famous LeeLoo scene in which Korben Dallas tries to hide her in the shower. LeeLoo auto-wash scene ...
