Q: Telepathic alien chicken - dystopian sci fi

AetilaI've read a book about a guy in a post-apocalyptic world who had a chicken...that later on showed herself being some kind of an alien, lol. Pretty weird stuff but it makes sense in the book, I remember the cover, of course there was a chicken/hen on it but not the title, it was a very interesting...

Q: Film about bone like creature

someoneuselessI watched this film about 2000-2005. This one is a HongKong film. I only remember the last scene fight where 3 girls fight with an skeleton like creature and the bone plug in the flesh of one of the female and control her action. She attack the other 2 and receive some hit. In the end, all 3 is a...

Q: What material Thor's clothes are made of?

Umbrella CorporationWhen Thor opened the Iris of Nidavellir's forge, he got 3rd degree burns. The heat he was exposed to was able to melt Uru. And, yet, his clothes survived. How? Thor definitely doesn't have aura kind of protection like silver age Superman as observed from Thor: Ragnarok movie. What material Thor'...

Q: What is the "ceramic" used in the world of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind?

BatpersonIn the manga and anime, there are many references to the use of "ceramic" as a material. We know that the vanished industrial civilization which preceded the rise of the toxic jungle used it widely, and it was important enough that this time was known as the Ceramic Era. In the time of Nausicaa m...

Q: 70s movie. A man and his clone are trying to find out who cloned him and why they are trying to kill them

NJohnnyIn the mid-70s I saw a movie on TV (USA). A man is working in a lab type facility (more computer or physics lab instead of medical lab) in a remote location. Something happens and his lab either burns or has an explosion. But he was able to escape the destruction, and eventually the facility, thr...

@Mithical You missed a capital: Hi, farquaad, but you

@TheLethalCarrot thanks

You doing the transcriptions by hand?
I have been just because I find it easier than OCR then check for errors/correct
Probably not a good a good advert for the sector I work in though!

Yes, by hand, but I'm tpyo-prone
(and not great at proofreading)

11:09 AM
Proofreading is why I've been doing it by hand

@TheLethalCarrot I do my transcriptions for Sci Fi SE by hand too. I have added a lot of Harry potter quotes on the site that way, that's the motivation why I asked scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/q/3577/4918 . OCR is reasonable, but so far I haven't done it myself for Sci Fi SE. Though obviously I have copy-pasted text that other people OCRed, since a lot of old out of copyright text that is available on the internet was originally OCRed.
The illustrations that I posted I have scanned or photographed though, I am not hardcore enough to redraw them by hand.

Q: Story involving children mind-controlled using food to take care of magical creatures after dark

Robert ColumbiaI'm trying to recall a story from my childhood. I believe this was an episode of a TV show, but could possibly have been a short film. I saw this in English in the mid-1990's. The story involved some modern children (I think two brothers) who arrive at a somewhat Victorian-looking boarding school...

OCR is great, I just know I'm not good enough at proofreading to correct all the mistakes, so doing it straight by hand is easier for me
The company I work in is an OCR company though so I should probably use it more! haha

@TheLethalCarrot Well sure, but I still have to proofread what I type by hand. About half of the time I proofread right away, but I also have many posts that I have posted without proofreading, and even some of my own that I proofread and fixed mistakes months later.

Oh you should do yeah, you can be a bit more confident in your own though... at least I think I can be

11:23 AM
How I should probably improve the workflow in the future is not OCR, but using a lower latency way to photograph snapshot a dead-tree document and get it onto my computer screen, because reading the document and my typed version on the same computer screen allows faster typing and proofreading than having to look at both the screen and the paper.

This new in the flags page?
> not an answer – TheLethalCarrot 29 mins ago removed during a deletion

@TheLethalCarrot I think that's backwards. It's exactly if you work in OCR that you know why you shouldn't trust it.
Though of course you would also know more about the detailed conditions for when you should use it and when it's not worth.

Q: Flag message showing as "removed during a deletion" in the flag history

DaniilI recently flagged a (now deleted) NAA on SO (10k+ on SO) (mirror for everyone). The flag is shown as "removed during a deletion" in the flag history: What does this mean? Is the flag "helpful", "declined", "disputed" or something else?

looks like it

Didn't even notice the helpful was missing too.

@Marvin This one sounds interesting.

Okay so that message shows through a post being deleted by any means then I guess

Q: Was Switch intended to be a different gender outside of The Matrix?

ValorumIMDB and other sources assert that the character of Switch was intended to be female inside The Matrix but male outside in the real world, and that this concept was later refined and/or blocked by the studio. Is there any "primary evidence (e.g. an interview with either the makers of the film or ...

Ah, right; someone has mentioned that before. I hadn't pursued it, but it looks like it integrates nicely.

It works nicely, I only have about 15% of the things turned on though
Just turned a bunch more off that don't work/I don't use

Q: Is there canon explanation on Cortana changing appearance?

GravemindMaster Chief can change his armour, but why Cortana is changing its appearance? Every game uses different model of Cortana. Rolland AI is not changing his appearance during Halo 4 and 5.

Q: In Dune, how do people cope with the lack of computers?

ArkiloI understand that Mentats have replaced the computers but the Mentats don't seem to be that many in number. From my understanding each house only has one Mentat. Now Mentats make perfect sense for doing political and other projections for the great houses but it would be impossible for a Mentat t...

"Which really makes me wonder what these things are made of." - This sounds like it might be worthy of its own question if you want to post it provided it hasn't been asked before. Could you also edit in the relevant quote to back this up? — TheLethalCarrot 21 mins ago
The quoted text doesn't appear in the question the comment is on?

Grace period edit
Didn't realise they removed it

I was confused because it appeared to be posted almost 10 minutes after the grace period.

Yeah, I had to go out to work on a machine halfway through writing the comment

(Unless the grace period has been silently extended recently, which is something I almost expect might have happened.)
Fair enough. it just seemed odd, is all.

Q: Why do zombies eat our brains?

DaftDo we know the first, or at least possibly the most influential, occurrence of zombies targeting humans for our delicious brains? And do we know why they go for that organ specifically?

Anecdotally, I remember hearing the original zombies were of haitian origin, and were after Grains due to being starved while mind slaved

@JackBNimble Jack, Jacks back.

Mike spent a lot of effort on the tag system... back in '14 or so
