Q: In ancient times various alien "gods" cause/feed on worship. Traveler, girl must hide object that threatens gods, fortunately lose it in the desert

Jacob C. supports GoFundMonicaThis was a short story/novella I read around 2000-2010. I believe it was in some anthology, but possibly it was in a SF/fantasy magazine that I read it. It may well have been from several decades prior to that. There were various fantasy elements, but it has a somewhat SF-ish premise. In ancien...

Q: Manga with a boy whose father was murdered (but is still around), living with a demon girl with magic hair

FuzzyBootsThis one is on the tip of my tongue. It's a manga that I read online somewhere between 5-10 years ago. The main character is a high-school-age boy who comes home to find his father dead, I think either drained of life (leaving him skeletal) or with his head bashed in. There's also a girl with ver...

Q: Can one become a jedi without being force-sensitive?

donotexecuteorder66I have pretty much basic knowledge when it comes to the Jedi Order. I've always wonder if being force-sensitive a requirement in joining the Order. It seems that all the jedi padawan, knight, and masters that I have seen so far are someways connected to the force. I think it's pretty cool if anyon...

Q: Is there a proper Batman reading order?

PracticalEffectsI recently got into reading Batman comics. I found a reading order here https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/batman-reading-order/#batman3 I decided to start with Batman year one and got all the way to Batman & the monster men but the way this order is presented is far from ideal. ...

Q: Did "2001: A Space Odyssey" make any reference to the names of companies, or show any evidence of the existence of advertisements?

uhohIn SE comments elsewhere 1, 2, 3 I talked about barriers of mixing advertising and spaceflight at NASA. In one I said: ...I'm not sure if Kubrick include any advertisements in his visionary extrapolation of what spaceflight would be like in this century in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey....

Q: Why couldn't Rick just use a Micro Sun to power his car?

RusshiroOkay, in Rick and Morty, obviously a lot of logic is pushed aside purely for it's fun and humor value. But some stuff doesn't make any logical sense for the smartest man in the universe. In this instance, in The Ricks Must be Crazy, Rick creates a tiny universe to power his car battery. A litera...

Q: Science fiction novel with aliens that could read dead people's memories

Matthew TaylorI read a book about 40 years ago that I would like to read again. I can't remember the plot but it had a policeman who needed to get some information from a criminal. Some aliens were involved and they could read the memories of people even if they were dead but only for a short while after death.

Q: A melancholic children's film set in a sandy landscape

Markus KlinikI don't remember any of the plot, only two scenes, and mostly how it made me feel. I think I saw the film in the late 1980s or early 1990s on some German children's TV programme. Whether the original language was German or it was a dub I don't remember. I'm pretty sure it was a stand-alone film,...

Q: What is the nature of Luke's scanner used to track and find R2-D2?

Has anyone here played both Zombicide and Dead of Winter?

6:30 PM
@Jenayah I'm reverting your edit. The "lose" verb was plural to agree with the subjects -- i.e. headlinese "Traveler, girl… lose" expands to regular English "The traveler and the girl...lose". The "aliens" and "gods" tags were both relevant to the story, so why remove them? I can remove the "This is all I remember of the story" part, though. (It was meant to forestall a "Please see the checklist for how you can improve the question" comment, as I remember no more.)
Well, partially reverting the edit. I didn't re-add the tags, yet. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what the tags are for; I presumed that they are there for questions that contain those elements as significant aspects, for help with searching/filtering.

6:47 PM
@JacobC.supportsGoFundMonica ah, entirely my bad on the "lose" part. The remembering part is unnecessary as it's implied the description given should be the maximum of what you remember but we agree on that (plus it's already way more detailed than some other stuff)

No worries. I changed the comma to an ampersand to make it clearer.

As per the tags, to each their own view I guess, but there are a couple of criteria out there that help me estimate whether they're relevant tags or not. Sec
The ones listed here scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/9221/98028 basically it doesn't make much sense, in this SFF site, to be an expert in , the name is ambiguous, and doesn't really give info on what it's about. You could apply a bazillion tags like this, . I think they're clutter, so when new ones pop, I tend to remove them. (I'm not alone in that)
is exactly one of those tags, but this one is way too far gone
Here's what I wrote about it in an earlier Meta:
> I don't think I'll surprise anyone when I say SFF has some "unclear" tags. I'm talking about non-work, non-franchise, non-media, non-author tags. While some are very popular (aliens has 1020 questions, magic 541, etc), there are also some which are only used 5-30 times. So far, everything is factual, it's objective.

Now it gets subjective: some users, myself included, think some of the latter tags:

don't really serve any meaningful purpose
don't have a clear, universal meaning
are irrelevant, just because you stick a "use this tag when talking about ______ in works of SFF" in the wiki d

Hmm. I can see the argument, but in that case wouldn't it make sense to delete the tags altogether? Do tags help provide a hint to the system's automatic algorithm that while drafting says "See these similar questions questions that may already answer your question", or are they purely human aids?
(I mean deleting the tags from the tag db, not just individual posts.)

7:03 PM
Well it was the only occurrence of the gods tag, so it will be automatically removed in... A week or a day, can't remember

A: How can we get rid of misspelled and unused (or "zombie") tags?

Joel CoehoornYou should edit out the tag from all the questions that use it. Note that you should probably seek consensus on the per-site meta before doing so, if the tag was somehow added to a significant number of questions without anyone noticing the misspelling. Tags not associated with any question are ...

Oops, I created it by typing it? I thought it was already there.

No worries
The privilege is earned at 300 rep, and there's no warning when you're creating a tag

7:21 PM
@Jenayah Personally, I feel that is sorely missed. :)

So I take it tags don't assist the "similar questions" suggestion generation algorithm, and that just works off title (and maybe body) text?

@JacobC.supportsGoFundMonica I think they do help, but are weighed by popularity of the tag. In story-id, that means story-id tag and media tag will outmatch the rest
And that suggest the tag they're using for comparison are even correctly used in the first place. But there's no "correct use" for these unclear tags, other than "this story featured aliens/recipes/robots/Gill man and I think it should be tagged as such"
And don't even get me started on character tags... (Except for comic characters who may have their own series)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in body (58): Is the technology seen in Assassians Creed achievable? by J-Will on scifi.SE

@Jenayah Pick any character in any work. I can write a fanfiction series about that character. Character tags for everyone!

I'd rather have my Pikachu plushie for President rather than have the fanfiction popularity of the character weigh in for a character tag.

Woohoo, go me!

Sounds like we need a character tag.

No!!! I don't want to risk becoming a fanfiction character!!!

And you can do an autobiographical fanfiction.

How narcissistic is it to write a fan fiction about your own life?

8:36 PM
I’d be more worried if you weren’t a fan if yourself.

You can live without being a fan of yourself. That doesn't even mean you have to hate yourself if you're not. Just that there's a middle place.

So basically what you’re saying is... I’ll have to write the fanfiction?

There's no interpreting my words like this. You were just waiting to pop that in
Also, no, nobody will have to.
Because that's not becoming a thing in the first place.

Q: Is there a canonical reason that the protagonist of the Mandalorian is still unnamed?

Jason P SallingerTo my knowledge those wearing Mandalorian armor have always had a proper name (e.g., Boba Fett, Jango Fett), as well as other works I'm not familar with, referenced here in a Wikipedia article for Mandalorian.
