Q: Would the Elder Wand have been able to destroy a Horcrux?

Voldemort's WrathWe see that the Elder Wand is able to perform magic that would not normally be possible with a regular wand. For example, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry fixes his broken wand with it: (emphasis mine) He laid the broken wand upon the headmaster’s desk, touched it with the very ...

Q: Why is @fez's reputation showing up as -202 on the "Users" page?

Voldemort's WrathI looked up the user @fez, and here is what the page showed: But when I clicked on it, @fez's user page showed what seemed like the correct reputation (5,000 something). Extremely soon after update: When I look it up again, it shows up the correct rep and all his badges and stuff. Why did it ...

Q: Short story about a teenager who has his brain replaced with a microchip (Psychological Horror)

Geklmintendon't of AwesomeThere was a short story I read as a kid (between 2007 and 2009) about a world where people were raised from a young age with a microchip implanted in their skull which was trained over time to simulate the brain. At some age, they would have their flesh brain tossed out in favor of the chip. But...

AJFaradayIn the Discworld series, the city of Ankh-Morpork has numerous professions (including criminal professions) managed and regulated by guilds. For most of these it's pretty easy to work out their income stream. The members make money, and pay guild dues in order to be able to practise their trade. ...

Richard CI have been reading through the Horus Heresy and post the attack on Prospero we learn that Magnus was shattered into shards. Q: Cartoon with a dead lady riding a ghost western cart towards a bad guy

Sorin Adrian CarbunaruAll I remember is that close to the end of the episode (whatever cartoon it was) a ghostly western cart ridden by a dead lady comes and I think kills or at least scares a bad guy. I think I saw this cartoon on Cartoon Network in the '90s or early 2000s. I think there also was a treasure involved ...

If you think about it the grammar doesn't quite make sense in some cases for "they" and "he or she" is really really awkward to use a lot in a sentence

Just treat "they" like "you". You use plural grammar for "you" even when it's singular, and it's been that way since, like, the 1600s.
(I can't type today...)

Q: Why do fantasy writers draw the line at the television?

Q: Why is Szeth allowed to sully his grandfather’s reputation?

StormblessedSzeth says in The Way of Kings that, as he is Truthless, he doesn’t go by Szeth-son-Neturo, so as not to insult his father. Instead he goes by Szeth-son-son-Vallano. Why is it alright, in his mind, to go by his grandfather’s name instead? please mark spoilers for anything after The Way of Kings ...

Arg. Hates it when people quote random web pages with spelling/grammar errors. Can't fix within the quote; tempted to annotate it with "[sic]." "passengers abroad the plane" indeed. :-P

I think you can out [sic] [sic] in.

3:53 PM
@DavidW with sic you aren’t supposed to fix it
On one answer in the thing before it I said basically
> Quote from {whatever thing} (spelling corrected):
How’d this end up in the queue 4 years later??

Someone would have flagged it

Also @TheLethalCarrot normally I think of you as being a little lenient with bad answers, why’d you vote to delete?
@TheLethalCarrot you can’t flag 4 years later is the thing
Oh an NaA you mean?

@Stormblessed Maybe he's grumpy today too.

I voted looks ok but it seemed bad...seemed alright because the spelling wasn’t bad tbh

Q: Does Fire Emblem: Three Houses have any connection with the Harry Potter series?

Zip Zap JThe newly released video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses features the main locale as a monastery that acts as a school. So, opinion, scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/217165 and scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/177246 are story-id questions with the same work as the answer, but fairly different questions. The former is my question (and my answer... took me bit to realize I was thinking of the same work). Should one be a dupe of the other? Should I add the relevent plot elements to my answer so that the older question also matches up?

Yes, definitely. I'd close the earlier as duplicate of your new one, since your question and answer have more details.
We don't normally bother trying to make the answer of the dupe target contain all the details from the other answers.
(Mostly because the answers aren't written by the people who are marking them duplicate. But even if they were, the additional points not relevant to the target question might just make the answer confusing.)

5:57 PM
@Mithrandir Right. "they" with plural verb forms, except that the possessive is "themself" when it refers to just one person
@Stormblessed I learned the basics once, but decided I don't like it, so I abandonned it
I may or may not get back to experimenting with more unusual keyboard layouts in the future.
I do know that some other people use dvorak layout though.

@b_jonas Ugh, "themself" looks terrible; "oneself" is better.

@Null "themself" if it's the reflexive for "them", "oneself" if it's for "one".
depends on what you're saying

@b_jonas If you're talking about one person you can use "one" as the gender-neutral subject, and "oneself" pairs with it.

Would anyone else like it if you could ping "@favorited" in comments?
Most of the time if something is really notable and I favorite I forget about it
What if you could say "@favorited hey see this look this big crazy thing happened wow"?
Or just get notifications for favorites having new answers

@Stormblessed This is something I actually expected to happen; it seems like a missed feature.
But I'm not in favour of some rando with commenting privileges deciding when I get pings.
@FuzzyBoots Are you doing those edits manually?

@DavidW Yes. Is there a better way?
@DavidW Done.

Q: How can I write good alt text?

StormblessedWhen editing posts, a whole ton of them don't have alt text on images. A lot of the time, I don't know what to put in the alt text. How can I write good alt text?

@FuzzyBoots That's what I was hoping you'd tell me. :)

@FuzzyBoots please check if a site is HTTPS before adding the "s" to the link scifi.stackexchange.com/revisions/216495/3

6:26 PM
@Stormblessed Oops. It had an error message saying that all image links had to be HTTPS, so I reflexively fixed all of the links. But that was my error.

@FuzzyBoots what sort of message? I've never seen this, sounds cool

It's not very exciting. Just try putting the link to an http site and you get "All image URLs must start with https://
Upload to imgur or specify an HTTPS URL".
Oy... I probably have a fair backlog of answers I've given with unshrunk images.

@FuzzyBoots what sort of edits were you doing manually just now?
@FuzzyBoots only if you put in an image link, right?

@Stormblessed Yup. And my manual edits were me taking oversize images and changing them to show the "m" images and show the regular one on clicking.

Q: Can plants "hear"?

StormblessedIn the Stormlight Archive series, most plants in the East freak out if you step near them: grass retreats into stone as you step on it, rockbuds pull their vines into their shells if you are close, etc. Are plants on Roshar ever shown to be sensitive enough to react to vibrations in the air, or d...
