@Jenayah - 2:30 in the morning in france

I was just surprised.
I'll be going to France soon. Well, kind of.
I'll fly over it on the way from Germany to Spain, anyway

Q: Seeking a Korean movie where the hero fights monsters to get his limbs back

BuzzNext to the studio where my daughter took ballet lessons (around 2011–2015), there was a shop where a guy sold second-hand clothing, bootleg DVDs, and other sundry goods. I sometimes went in to browse while my daughter was dancing, and he usually had one of his DVDs playing. There was one, in p...

@Jenayah Do you sleep?
Feb 25 at 2:46, by TheLethalCarrot
also I’m convinced you’re a robot, you just never sleep
@Adamant eh, French sky isn't the best thing we have to offer ;)

I might also take a train through France to Amsterdam

12:44 AM
The Thalys?

Maybe? I still need to arrange my trip back to Amsterdam.

A: Weird cartoon show: characters get trapped in a game show hosted by an alien, can only escape if they win the show

StormblessedAs this question's asker's account was deleted so they will not self-answer, I am taking the answer they said that they found and turning it into a answer. This is "The Feud!", episode 54 of Voltron: Legendary, and the 4th episode of season seven. A brief summary that matches the question: ...

@Adamant Thalys was actually quite nice. Way more comfortable than the French SNCF.

Was that answer I did alright? The question was so undetailed
@Mithrandir nice new profile picture

1:03 AM
oh well I will just take a plane
The train takes 15 hours, I don't know why,.

@Stormblessed it's alright. An airing date would still be helpful though, even if the question didn't provide info on that.

A bullet train would be able to do it in like 7 hours. Why is it 15?

@Adamant from New Zealand?

@Stormblessed I don't think there's a train that goes from New Zealand to France, especially in 15 hours.
I would like that train lol.

The underground kind?

1:07 AM
I think Elon Musk's proposed hyperloop would do that

I was gonna say something like that
I think it got canceled or something

There are so many books and TV series that almost no one asks questions about here.

Well they canceled a plan for a test tunnel in LA last year
@Adamant I mean that’s true about anything but yeah

Meanwhile we have who knows how many Harry Potter questions.

We have literally 1 Skulduggery Pleasant question
Those are in a ton of languages and since last year are all available in America
And they’re great

1:15 AM
@Adamant connections between train stations?

@Jenayah I'm sure
This would be easily if it were all one country.

Q: How is Long Tom ammunition more damaging than AC/20 ammunition?

michaelb958According to sarna.net's BattleTechWiki*, the Autocannon/20 (or AC/20 for short) inflicts 20 damage on a direct hit; the Long Tom Artillery Piece inflicts a maximum of 30, diminishing with distance from blast focus; yet both weapons have 5 ammo per ton at an ammo cost of C10000 per ton. In other ...

Q: X-Men fanfic series about a blue-furred baby who's left on Beast's doorstep

FuzzyBootsI believe I read this somewhere between 1998 and 2002, possibly on the FanFic Mailing List (FFML), although I was also subscribed to a mailing list that was devoted to admirers of blue-furred characters (I think I remember them specifically calling out Beast, Grover, and maybe Cookie Monster). Q: In The Incredibles 2, why does Screenslaver call herself a pun on something that doesn't exist in the 1950s pastiche?

incrediblesquestionseriousThe Incredibles 2, the Screenslaver's name is a clear pun on "screensaver". Screensavers were invented in 1984. The film takes place in a broad 1950s pastiche, and we don't see any personal computers or other similar monitor based devices, rendering this pun completely useless. Yet a villain ...

@fredsbend @Jenayah only Dune news is usual web stuff. Not sold on all the cast and I am a shameless fan of Lynch film. m.youtube.com/watch?v=S3VMfzoBO7Y

Q: What does this line mean in Zelazny's "The Courts of Chaos"?

WildcardI'm rereading the Amber Chronicles, and this line in the fifth book, The Courts of Chaos, has me entirely stumped. It comes just at the end of Corwin's encounter with "Lady." I'll include a little bit of extra lines to put it in context; the part I'm baffled about is in bold. "Come to my pa...

I'm a huge fan of the Lynch film, too and consider it a milestone in science-fiction cinema. But...I'm also a big enthusiast for Denis Villeneuve so I was delighted to hear that he will be making the new one. I also read the book recently and noticed some integral themes that the Lynch adaptation left out. So it will be interesting to see if the new film will cover those more accurately.

@Marvin the Lynch film needs to be given credit for what it is. Hardly any film resembles the original draft so why should an adaptation be any different. Herbert was involved in production and spent a lot of time with Lynch and that should be taken into account. DV version will be interesting!!!

@Seamusthedog any chance you're replying from mobile? Mobile chat behaves funny sometimes :P

Oh, of course, it doesn't really matter if it captures all aspects of the book. It stays a masterpiece in its own right. Scanning through book pages while watching a film and frantically comparing scenes has about never done anyone's sanity any good.

1:10 PM
@NapoleonWilson depends if it's the first Sin City movie you're comparing with comics ;) this has to be the most accurate adaptation I've ever seen.
Heck at this point it's not even an adaptation anymore
Save for a couple of scenes

Q: How do we deal with terminology questions that turn out to be mere language questions?

MachavityPrompted by this question: Who is "He that flies" in Lord of the Rings? The simple answer from comments "He who flies" is a way of describing someone who is fleeing a battle. It doesn't refer to a particular character. There's been a growing debate that this should be closed and/or migrate...

Q: UK comedy book about a man falsely accused of murder while his wife is off with the new neighbours

Maury MarkowitzThis should be easy to remember, but I'm having a senior moment. In the 1980s, potentially early 1990s, I read a very funny book about a man who's wife goes off with the new neighbours on a houseboat and the husband is soon on the hook for killing her. She learns they are swingers, at which poin...

@Jenayah yeh replying from mobile and not at home. Will be back in a few days. Thanks.

4:36 PM
@Seamusthedog What I find is that replying in mobile chat when I select the message I want to reply to, if I use the previous/next buttons to move to the previous message and back then the reply always goes to the message I'm intending to reply to. It's like it has a problem initializing state on selection, but it gets state correct on stepping. It also works if I pick the message before the one I want to respond to and advance to the next message before replying.

Q: Why did Robert pick unworthy men for the White Cloaks?

AegonWhen we look at past examples, Kingsguards' history for most part has been illustrious and a shining example of chivalry and honour. There have been rare exceptions every two or three decades or so but that doesn't match up to what happened in Robert's reign. Robert's Seven could perhaps be cal...

@Seamusthedog Awesome! I saw the lynch movie on Netflix about 10 years ago. I was unaware of the books at the time and this had no expectations. I failed to understand it and fell asleep. Lol.
But now that I'm a hugh fan of the books, I'll totally watch this now.
Among the DV cast, of whom are you unsure?
@NapoleonWilson I think it's hard to decide which scenes make it to screen in a book like Dune. Every scene feeds the next.
In today's action-marvalized features, I just hope the new one isn't 20 minutes of story and two hours of end battle.

@Jenayah "Yet another retired battlemech?"
@fredsbend There will necessarily still be stuff left out. Sure, there's a lot of descriptive exposition that can be shown, not told, but still the book is >500 pages. Given the rule of thumb that 1 page is 1 minute onscreen, that's >8h.

Q: Special series of story-telling segments, as told by actors; one had a magical whale who befriended a girl

Russ RainfordI'm not sure of the series in question, or if it was a "special" of sorts; it was played, on tap, in class during the 1980s as part of story time. The screen focused on actors. (For some reason I'm seeing a man that looks like Bram from the Sharon, Lois & Brams Elephant show as one of the speak...

Alex DownsA wererat is a therianthropic creature in the shape of a rat, according to its Wikipedia page and since it also lists Pettigrew as an example, he has to be one, right?

There's actually a direct canon quote which addresses this (the difference between a werecreature and an animagus) ...
Well, I say "canon" ... the films, but still.
> Snape: Now, which one of you can tell me the difference between an Animagus and a werewolf? [Hermione raises her hand] No one? How disappointing.
Hermione: Please, sir. An Animagus is a wizard who elects to turn into an animal, a werewolf has no choice. With each full moon, he no longer remembers who he is.

9:15 PM
Timothée Chalamet seems like an excellent choice, though. But I can also totally get behind Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonnen, he makes for a great villain, especially a scheming and sadistic one. Also, David Dastmalchian is an excellent lunatic. And Rebecca Ferguson is both hot and resolute.
All in all the cast is very promising. I still don't know who will replace Sting, though.

9:35 PM
@NapoleonWilson I agree that Stellan Skarsgård is an excellent choice; he could really pull off a much more nuanced portrayal of Baron Harkonnen than Lynch's version had. (Which I thought was a bit over the top, TBH; the movie Harkonnen seemed a bit unstable to be as powerful as he was in the book.)
