Q: Multiple FTL units on Galactica?

AlsonWhy didn't the Battlestar Galactica have more than one FTL unit so that it could jump and rejump without any delay? @Mithrandir Voted to leave open: the answer to the old question is "we don't know Snape told him to use a snake specifically", which doesn't answer this at all. — Rand al'Thor ♦ 59 secs ago

@Randal'Thor At least someone else said it...

To be fair, I probably would have closed it if the old Q and its A had been equally applicable to "why did Malfoy ..." as "why did Snape ..."
When I saw the titles, I was ready to close. But the two questions aren't as similar as they first appear.

The answer doesn't even really address why Snape would have chosen specifically that spell. It essentially just says that it probably wasn't because he suspected Harry was a Parselmouth.

Aztek is the name of two superheroes in the DC Universe. Both versions are based out of the fictional Vanity City. Aztek is the champion of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. The first Aztek first appeared in Aztek, The Ultimate Man #1 in August 1996, created by Grant Morrison and Mark Millar. Following the short run series, Aztek appeared in several issues of JLA also written by Morrison. The second Aztek appeared in Justice League of America vol. 5 #20 in December 2017, created by Steve Orlando and Ivan Reis, as the rival and later partner of the Ray. == Fictional character biography == ===...

Let's see how that goes.
@Jenayah How in the world did you read it that fast?

@Alex I read the footnotes before I read the answers

@Jenayah That's [part of the reason] why I cited him and not a different source.

If I'm going to cite a medieval Jewish philosopher it may as well be one that someone knows.

The quote (and your answer) remind me of a different "philosopher":

@Jenayah How is Owlman different from Batman?

He's basically an "alternate world" version of Batman, as a bad guy.
Remember that you're not really a superhero if you don't have an alternate version of you in a prallel world who is a supervillain.
Doesn't apply as much with the reverse, though.

Q: Did Palpatine have a homeworld prior to the release Episode 1?

CBredlowWe're all familiar with Palpatine's homeworld of Naboo in the current canon, as well as Legends material after the release of Episode 1. What I want to look at is content from before that movie. Did Palpatine have a homeworld, and what was it?

6:50 PM
So I'm not a superhero?
Or do I have an alternate version of me?

You probably wouldn't know until you meet them... So maybe?

If my science is correct, I think owls hunt bats. Is that the point?

eh?

Other types of flying animals find the bat to be a delicious meal. They include owls and hawks. Both of them can be active at night which is when they bats are out. Owls have frequently been observed capturing bats while they are in flight. They are able to go undetected and when the bats fly by they are consumed without any warning.

yeah...?

6:55 PM
So that would make Owlman a predator of Batman.

He did beat Batman up in that film ^

Nice.

Q: In which New Jedi Order book does Jacen see the Force on Coruscant and realises that it is neither good nor bad?

jacen soloIn one of the New Jedi books, Jacen Solo (i think) follows a 'monster' and sees the source of the Force and realises that it is only one, neither good nor bad

Batman won, though
@Marvin up for ten minutes and no answer from Valorum? :P

7:58 PM
@Marvin possibly Traitor. From Wikipedia:
> Jacen wakes up on the captured Coruscant, realizing in horror what this newly transformed planet once was.
> Vergere leads him on a journey throughout the transformed world, and gradually, she shows him evidence that the Jedi's ideals of the Force are flawed; there is no light or dark side, but an overall power of the Force whose raw power is only considered to be of the dark side. Jacen refuses to believe this until Vergere leads him into a Yuuzhan Vong trap where he nearly kills all of them, including Vergere herself.
> Jacen is shocked at just how right Vergere is, even after she revealed previously that she was once a member of the previous Jedi Order.
The "trap" being a cavern beast, from the Wikia, so it'd fit the "monster" part.
Found with the Google query "new jedi order" novel "jacen solo" source of the force coruscant site:starwars.wikia.com url:_order
^ if anyone wants it

Trying to get the Generalist badge without any answers in Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, GOT/ASOIAF and Tolkien stuff, just because I can :D

I don't think I'll ever get that. There probably won't ever be 20 Harry-Potter tags in the top 40.

8:06 PM
Then you have to read more stuff.

Eh. I got in on another site. That's good enough.

Plus you can get one in story-ID with fanf-ID, so that's one less to care about.

I also realized yesterday that I actually have a Tumbleweed badge.

that you have score in that tag, but it's under 15, so doesn't "count" yet

Yeah. Just realized that.
So basically, I probably won't be getting it.

depends on how stuff you answer gets tagged.

Wow, looking now I see that I got it in under six months.

Woah!
Impressive. That stuff is hard to get.
Though maybe it's a tad bit easier on MY where the tags might have more correlation between them? (i guess)

It doesn't tell you which tags you got it for though.
@Jenayah Depends what you mean by correlation.

8:16 PM
Well here I can totally imagine someone being an expert on HP but not knowing much about Marvel (nudge nudge), but on religion, maybe the tags/notions are more "related"?
If you're some kind of "expert" in religious things, can you only be an expert in, I don't know, food-related stuff?

You mean it's less likely to be an expert in one specific area?
Well is one of the top 20.

@Alex from what I know of your SFF knowledge, story-ID might validate you , (depending on the story-ID), , , and at some point.

But yeah, to an extent, it's unlikely for someone to only know stuff in one area.

@Alex basically
but I guess I'm probably wrong, people can do tremendous research in one thing or stuff

But there are are a few top tags that are sufficiently separate. For example, some of the most popular tags are Jewish Law, Jewish Thought, and Biblical Interpretation. While it is less likely for someone to be an expert in only one area of Jewish Law, it is not as unlikely for someone to be an expert in Jewish Law but not in Biblical Interpretation.

from a very very quick glance at it MY seems a bit less active than SFF, has less users (241 pages vs 1800 on SFF, though it's a bad indicator), but you have 52 Generalist badges over there, while SFF only has 44.

In any case, though, there are a handful of tags which encompass almost every question. so in that sense it might be easier.

these figures are probably ought to be qualified, but still, that would tend towards being less of "single area expert" when it comes to religion

@Jenayah Fewer users but more activity per user:

Q: Significance (or lack thereof) of the number of questions per user

AlexI recently calculated the number of questions per user for all Stack Exchange sites with more than 10,000 questions. The data was taken from the main Stack Exchange page listing all the sites, and I rounded to the nearest 1/100. (Obviously all data is only accurate as of now and can change in the...

I would have guessed so, hence the "bad indicator"

On the other hand, there are certain areas where people could be experts in just that area because it is part of their profession.

Like a cook preparing specific Jewish food?
But not particularly aware of, say, the laws of marriage?

@Jenayah Yeah. Or a scribe knowing the laws relating to Torah scrolls. Or a cantor knowing the laws of prayer. Or a circumcisor knowing the laws of circumcision.

Makes sense.

(Or a philosopher knowing about Gersonides.)

Potential hint towards you being a philosopher?

@Jenayah Well I just got my Bronze badge in Jewish thought/philosophy. But on the other hand my top tag is Jewish law.

8:52 PM
hmmmm...
the plot thickens

But there are more than eight times as many questions with the latter tag, so that might account for it.

@Alex Bad math, probably? Because it includes users that never ask questions.

@WebHead Right. It's not saying that every user asks more questions. It's saying that the average number of questions per users is higher.

user132126
But because "user" includes people that never participate, there's almost no way to draw conclusions from it.

user132126
The conclusion that I would draw is that people are far less interested in the stacks with high questions per user, so no one even bothers getting creating an account with their network profile to leave comments or upvote things.

9:07 PM
Could be.

@WebHead something not mentioned in this is the accounts created, which posted one NAA and were never seen again. I'm guessing we get something like at least 3-4 of them each day here on SFF. Movies, maybe one per day? Even less. Mi Yodeya, I wouldn't know.

user132126
On SO, when you limit it to people that have at least asked 1 question, the average question per user going up to 5.14

@WebHead woohoo!

@Jenayah From my own observations I don't think Mi Yodeya has too many of those.

SFF has dozens
Out of the 1800 pages of users there outta be at least 200 of those
200 pages, I mean

9:15 PM
So that means there are users who aren't sticking around for some reason.

one-off passerby posting NAAs...

@Jenayah On Mi Yodeya 60% of users have >1 reputation. Here it's 62%. Those are pretty close.

@WebHead well, Mi Yodeya kills the score and is even in front of SO

@WebHead data.stackexchange.com/judaism/query/994958/… That shows that Mi Yodeya has more than 2.5 times as many questions per questioner.

Q: 80's/90's Sci-Fi Movie: People on desert planet with robot who jumps through glass at the end?

user112401I watched this movie when I was a kid in the early 90's. I have no idea what the plot was, but it took place on a desert planet, I believe it involved some sort of farming, and there was a robot they either befriended or were chasing. The robot, from what I remember, looked similar to the Alpha r...

Q: Why does the Orville have the ability to make it rain on the bridge?

ThunderforgeIn The Orville, 2x06 "A Happy Refrain", Isaac tells the titular ship to turn on the environmental systems on the bridge, causing it to start pouring rain. Having a wet and slippery bridge seems like something that would be a distraction at best and a danger at worse. Imagine it the bridge were t...
