9:04 PM
hey
everybody
/anybody

One anybody, over here.

hey :)

Oi :D

*returns from hiding shiny things* Heyo

Note to self: Mithrandir has shiny things.

9:08 PM
interesting

That are often not hidden.

Plot twist Mith is a magpie
oooh t'was a joke with the Niffler
I feel stupid now

Note to self: Keep a close eye on Alex.

@Jenayah Lots of plot twists involving Mithrandir.
@Mithrandir No need. You scared me enough just witht that image.
May 15 '17 at 12:37, by Shadow Wizard
Plot twist: @SQB is @Mithrandir's sock! :D

@Alex well that's new

9:11 PM
People are always either accusing me of being a sock or having a sock.
For the past four years or so.

Well most people have socks. So if you don't have a sock that makes you more likely to be a sock.

@Alex "most people have socks" [citation needed]

I do have socks. They're all properly annotated, though.

@Jenayah Is having multiple users for my Mi Yodeya account a reverse sock?

oh dear

9:13 PM
@Alex ...uh

Who's ducking the question now?

Probably the goose.

So Jenayah = goose?

false, jenayah = moose

I think we established that yes, if you replace that "s" with a "gl"

9:16 PM
goose is too much of a prestigious role

I call fowl.

Woah I'm gone for two minutes and you're calling me animal names now
I mean... I guess technically I did call your momma an elephant ;p

@Jenayah I think you were the first to call people animal names today.

AHAH! Even with my little rodent paws I'm still a faster gun than you :)

"Hello? This is Opal; I'd like to speak with your son, Artemis, please."

9:17 PM
@Jenayah A thousand curses on you!
@Mithrandir Now I'm really getting nervous.
Wait, geese have rodent paws?

(That took way too many edits to get right.)
@Alex You learn something new every day.
Or, a new knew now.

@Alex ooooh... A moose... Not a mouse...

I think I learned too much animal biology today...

@Jenayah Chocolate?

^ this used to make me laugh so hard in junior high
welll... now it does sound silly
This thing has 52k views?
Shit at least 200 of them must be from me and my pals back in the day

9:23 PM
I guess I'm not in Junior High.

@Niffler also how is a goose more prestigious than a moose?

A goose can fly.

@Jenayah Thank goodness for wirelss connections!

A moose can frigging charge
more my kind of thing
@RDFozz AHAHAHAH :'D

because geeses are terrifying

9:24 PM
(also I have the wired connection image in my mind now, thanks)

whereas meeses are just innocent
little meese

@Niffler oh they sure are, I got chased by one when I was 4 and my mom just stood there laughing

....

And she was traumatized for life.

yes

9:25 PM
@Niffler eh we've kinda established that I'm not that innocent

this is why she wears a ninja mask

@Mithrandir let's just say I won't blame Egyptians for inventing foie gras ;)
@Niffler Yeah, I'm the Silent Death of the Geese

@Jenayah For some reason I'm having a hard time picturing that.

oh dear
what did the geese ever do to you?

@Mithrandir Aren't Moogles the little white guyts from Final Fantasy?

9:29 PM
I have no idea.

@Alex visual aid:

@Jenayah My issue wasn't picturing someone killing geese; it was picturing you killing geese.

@Alex I'm the ninja.

Unless that's meant to be a picture of you?

8 mins ago, by Jenayah
@Niffler oh they sure are, I got chased by one when I was 4 and my mom just stood there laughing

9:34 PM
@Jenayah Doesn't fit your description:
Aug 31 at 23:12, by Jenayah
@Alex meh, I'm a cap person anyways :p

Moogle

You know @RDFozz it's funny because for whatever reason my computer doesn't want to display your avatar so in review page there's just a Christmas hat floating on the page

Are you guys talking about the chocolate mousse moose? mlp.wikia.com/wiki/File:Chocolate_Mousse_Moose_S2E24.png

@Alex the deception is part of th ninja way

9:35 PM
@b_jonas yummy

@Jenayah Yes.

@Jenayah Funny, for a while I couldn't see his avatar either, but now I can.

@Jenayah It goes with my white beard, red outfit, and tummy that shakes when I laugh like a bowl full of Jell-o.

oh right @Jenayah
i thought you meant a moose chased you...

@RDFozz oh-oh-oh
@Niffler ahah no it was a goose

9:38 PM
Wait, so what's the conculsion? Is Alex that young?

I'm from France... We don't have a lot of meeses here, especially not in city parks... ;)

@Jenayah im afraid i'll have to agree with your mom, i would be laughing as well

@Jenayah Of course. It's only other deer we have here. But I've been to Sweden a few times, and have seen real moose there, mostly in zoos but occasionally outside too.

@b_jonas Alex's age is unknown. But we've come to the conclusion that if @Mith ever becomes a scientist, Alex's mom will retroactively become an elephant.

wait wait wait back up

9:39 PM
@b_jonas The conclusion is that Alex is like Napolean.

@Niffler well yeah but you're not supposed to be protecting 4-years-old me or whatever so that's okay :P

@Alex Hmm.

@Jenayah Mithrandir is not a scientist?

geese have been known to cause fatalities, so i now agree with jenayah

@Alex I think Mith doesn't have a scientist job yet? Only the editor one?

9:41 PM
@Jenayah Good. Otherwise I might have to revoke your child prodigy title and give it to Mithrandir instead.

@Alex My mother caught me reading A Brief History of Time at 4AM when I was 11.

@Mithrandir Hmmm, Artemis Fowl indeed.

@Alex there's nothing to revoke to begin with ><

Yeah, good books tend to do that.
I caught myself going three or four stops past where I wanted to get off the tram when I was reading Beowulf.
I don't even try to count the number of times I read late during the night anymore.

my process for selecting books: find longest one in bookstore, buy

9:44 PM
@Jenayah And I wasn't born from an elephant. Right.

@Niffler Oh! What good dictionaries have you bought yet?

:)
none

@Niffler Some would look for the thickest one, not the longest....

fantasy novels tend to be longer...

@RDFozz I think that was meant as a reply to Niffler.

9:45 PM
@Niffler huh, i'd've expected you to just look at the gilding

Process for selecting books: get around to finish Nexus (it's one painful read...) and finally buy Hellbent

@Alex Edited - sometimes things move faster than I can click.

Gotta order the rest of the Third Law trilogy at some point

@Jenayah Hey, I liked Nexus. Than again, you may not be talking about the Mike Baron/Steve Rude version.

that's the second step @Mithrandir :) if it doesnt have gold binding then i just straight up leave the bookstore :)

9:46 PM
@RDFozz No, Ramez Naam

@Jenayah yeah - The Nexus from the comics is Horatio Hellpop - nothing about hellbent

Ah no Hellbent isn't even remotely scifi

^Trying to imagine a Hellpop - a Popsicle made from buffalo wing sauce?

Mmmm, sulfur on a stick.

9:50 PM
That's OK - you're all probably too young to remember the Heyday of First Comics - Nexus, Badger, Grimjack, Jon Sable Freelance. Sigh!

Do we have any news about when the official spoilers for Star Wars episode 9 will start?

*checks watch* Three months, twelve days, 7 minutes, and 45 seconds.

@b_jonas right now: Rey dies at the end. Oh wait, you meant spoilers from actual sources?

star wars = meh
2

@Jenayah I said official spoilers.

9:53 PM
I heard Rey goes forward in time, comes to our galaxy and becomes the bride from Kill Bill 1 and 2

@Niffler have a star
@RDFozz never heard of those. Here, have a walking cane :P

hmm

@Jenayah Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

@RDFozz I like that theory

@RDFozz darthsanddroids.net/episodes/1191.html “In a few years you will discover the secret of Force Time Travel.” (non-canonical bonus strip in Darths & Droids)

9:56 PM
That reminds me of a Star Wars question.
Did (human) life originate independently on multiple planets?

@Alex IMO no, and the humans in Star Wars aren't even the same as the humans in our galaxy, merely close enough that they can be played by human actors who speak English instead of Galactic Basic or whatever Star Wars calls Common.

@b_jonas So do we know which was the original human planet?

@b_jonas If Lucas hadn't sold the series to Disney, then in 10 years he'd re-release it with all the actors replaced by CGI aliens - it's what he would have done at the time, if he'd had the technology :-)

@RDFozz And it would have been worth, at least for some of the actors.

@Jenayah bwahahaha!!! Famous last words!

10:01 PM
@Alex Earth Prime
wait, wrong universe :P
Also, Your Earth Prime May Vary
@Mithrandir24601 :P

@Jenayah What's that? Free two-day shipping from Earth throughout the galaxy?

order your golden cheetos now!

@Jenayah The issue, here, is that technically... @Mith can be considered a scientist. Therefore, we must conclude that @Alex's mother is an elephant... or consider the premise of this entire conversation flawed and [ERROR]

@Mithrandir Is this some king of Schroedinger's Cat situation? My mother is simultaneously an elephant and not an elephant?

@Alex nah, it's supposed to be the "real" Earth throughout DC's multiverse... But it's... complicated... (read: there are multiple "first, real" Earths out there, but they're different, unique, but they're kinda the same - it's a mess)

10:04 PM
Incidentally, @Jenayah that might answer your question.
4
Q: Why did Schrödinger choose a cat for his thought experiment?

JenayahWhile Schrödinger's cat thought experiment serves a greater purpose than animal cruelty enjoyment, one of the possible results is a dead cat. Gruesome or not is one's appreciation, but you will always find someone joking about "oh boy this guy must have hated cats". Which leads to a simple ques...

@Alex I propose we upgrade "Schrödinger's cat" to "Alex's Elephant Mom"

@Jenayah You have my vote.

*hopes that Alex's mom never find this discussion*
2

By the way, the question is still open, despite all your cocoon stack fears.

mithrandir is actually alex's mom

10:06 PM
@Mithrandir plot twist it was Alex's mom typing all the way, to check what sites her son was going on

@Mithrandir What if she is the other user of my account mentioned by Jenayah earlier?

@Alex eh, I've branched out to Movies as well

gj jenayah
movies is fun

@Niffler So that makes Jenayah descended from Mithrandir.
Dec 27 at 19:31, by Jenayah
Hey so you're my ancestor? Hint towards your age? ;)

the plot thickens

10:08 PM
So Mith>Alex>[...]>Jenayah

And since Alex = Mithrandir, we are stuck in a loop:
Oct 9 at 19:34, by Alex
@Jenayah Alex=Mithrandir=TheLethalCarrot=Edlorhiad

except Mith's 15/16
I'm 21
so this is going in reverse

We're on SFF, we can go with JKR math.
2

@Jenayah A little aging potion ought to account for that.

jenayah is 12
she speaks in reverse
*a messed up reverse
where only parts of the sentence are in reverse

10:10 PM
Jenayah = Yoda?
And Yoda = Dumbledore:
Dec 21 at 19:58, by Alex
Ah, in which case Dumbledore might actually be Yoda, just with a fake beard and on stilts.

....and since Dumbledore = Gandalf, Jenoogle = me

@Alex Or time travel.

And Alex = Voldemort:
Dec 3 at 19:52, by Alex
Nov 28 at 20:33, by Jenayah
Nov 2 at 18:22, by Jenayah
@Alex you're an unsufferable twisted, bully boy turning into an evil snakelike creature after splitting his own soul?

WHAT
Who am I?

andthat would make jenayah a ghost

10:11 PM
;_;
I'm a moose ghost now?!

So we are planning on killing each other?

With a beard and green pointy ears?!

-13
Q: Is Dumbledore Ron in the future?

PotterFanGirl10They both love Bertie Botts, they both have long fingers, share a left-leg injury, like Chocolate Frog Cards, and have naturally red hair.

@Alex No, since you're me. And Jen is me. And I'm me. And @Mithrandir24601 is me.

i've been broken

10:12 PM
@Mithrandir So multiple Mithrandir parts are trying to kill multiple Mithrandir parts?

It would certainly explain things.
Then again, I must've made a wrong turn and left sanity and sense behind. There's no rhyme and reason anymore. Where's Tock when you need him?

@b_jonas I object to being associated with Ron through a bunch of extensions.

@Mithrandir and I'm the Pope

@Mithrandir24601 can you bite undead back to life?

@Alex stickman.qntm.org/comics.php?n=146 StickManStickMan heros order food that "delivers anywhere" while on a space shuttle going to the moon

10:16 PM
@Jenayah Never tried

@Mithrandir24601 what are you waiting for, get kidnapped and embark on a train managed by an army of the undead lead by a human/spider hybrid

@Jenayah *slaps forehead* Of course, why didn't I think of that? So simple!

@Mithrandir *slaps forehead* nobody ever gets my references :(

1 hour ago, by Jenayah
I feel stupid now
Is this genetic?

@Alex Well if it is, thanks for nothing, ancestor of mine.
It's more your fault than Mith's
you're closer in the family tree.

10:19 PM
@Jenayah I was referring to Mithrandir's side of the ancestry.

@Alex Mith's your mom! Every side of their ancestry is your ancestry, stupid! :P

myth = mith

Hang on... does that mean I'm an elephant?

@Jenayah Eh, I think I lost track. I didn't realize Mithrandir was the elephant.

10:21 PM
@Mithrandir depends. Did you become a scientist?

0
Q: An anthology of short stories about first contact

RafaYears ago I remember seeing an anthology of short stories about first contact, aptly titled: "First contact" (or something like that).

@Jenayah No, but you were ambiguous when specifying who would become a scientist, and one of the people who it could be referring to is a scientist.

@Alex Come on it's so freaking simple! @Mith's your fat elephant momma, I'm a ghost bearded moose with green pointy ears, @RDFozz's still catching up because you know, walking cane and all, @Niffler's well, a niffler, and you're a left-handed walrus.
@Mithrandir I meant MithNoNumbers -_-

@Jenayah Where did the walrus part come in from?
Or are you saying I'm Slughorn?

@Alex Oh come on, do I have to go all over again?!

10:25 PM
@Jenayah but I want to be back in time to watch next week's episode of Les Mis

@Mithrandir24601 it's a series now?

@Jenayah Yep :) 6 episodes on BBC, first ended 26 minutes ago

@Mithrandir24601 oh alright

@Mithrandir24601 @Mithrandir same person?

@Stormblessed Depends on your perspective.

10:31 PM
In this context, that's a very difficult question to answer :P
No, we're not the same person, although people do tend to mix us up.

Whoever gets the ping first?

Just don't ask what happened to the other 24600.

@Mithrandir I think I've been confused by the Din and the Row.
^Or did I misunderstand that reference?

Just as long as we don't agree to agree to disagree about agreeing to disagree we should be fine.
Bah humbug.

Q: book that matches a movie the bureau of magical things

Gabreil maxwellSo i watched some movie recently well looking for a book that matches a movie the bureau of magical things, i really can not get most details out of it but this is what I got out now my definitions of any book that might have the same plot of the movie this is it: * about a library of mag...

10:40 PM
I think over the course of this conversation we've made references to Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Artemis Fowl, The Phantom Tollbooth, Les Miserables, and whatever Jen was referencing that we didn't get :P

@Mithrandir ask a story-id. It's on-topic.

I guess that surpasses:
Dec 16 at 19:22, by Jenayah
HP/Counter Strike/ War & Peace crossover

FWIW it's the same reference as
Aug 17 at 18:25, by Jenayah
(kudos to whoever catches that reference)
and
Aug 23 at 13:49, by Jenayah
(kudos to whoever get that reference ;D )
@Marvin that can use some close votes
here hat change so that @Randal'Thor doesn't mistake me with @Stormblessed anymore :P

I wished I had the monopoly hat. :'(

@NapoleonWilson should've spotted unexpected Ministries of Defence in end credits

10:55 PM
But I only asked my question two days ago, so I still have to wait 5 days, if there will even be still Winterbash by then.

i wish i had...
nah im happy with my hats

I have a question that will soon get it, if no one throws in an answer.

:)
alex has so many good questions :"(

Actually... I should have gotten it already.
@Niffler Thanks!

it bugs me though they dont become as popular as they should become

10:57 PM
@Niffler you mistyped "twisted questions"

@Niffler oh actually that's probably my favorite one
Though the answer is JKR maths

i tried to anser that one with wiki :)
i've learned to hate wiki

@Jenayah Are you sure?
Oct 24 at 15:59, by Jenayah
Might actually be my favorite question of yours

oof

10:59 PM
ah, forgot the DA coins
well ex aequo :)
@Niffler that's the spirit

making up random stuff
gj wiki

@Jenayah That's actually one of the few with no downvotes.

@Niffler uh, weird, I upvoted both answers but not the question. Here, fixed :)

:)
ty

A question with no downvotes? :O

11:02 PM
@Mithrandir you mistyped "An @Alex question with no downvotes"

time to watch tv, bye!

Shouldn't be hard to rectify, in any case.

@Niffler see ya

Unless you've both used up your downvotes for the day.

agents of shield reruns
:)

11:03 PM
@Alex I hit the upvote button more often than I hit its twin

@Jenayah In general? Or on my questions?

I don't think I've voted a single time on SFF today, so I definitely have votes left...

@Niffler oh right I've been saying "I gotta check this out some day" for like, 6 years now
@Alex in general

@Jenayah This is very common.

@Jenayah That's...a good summary for the show and how I feel after watching the first season. ;-)

11:05 PM
I rarely downvote.
But when I do, they tend to all come on the same question.

I've cast 4.7k upvotes here on SFF versus 1.7k downvotes.

925:52 for me.
962:11 on my other main site.

@Mithrandir I know

Unfortunately, I tend to primarily check out the worse questions here. I have to remind myself of checking some good ones too now and then to not have a too negative voting record.

@Mithrandir 2803:321
339:329 on main Meta
@NapoleonWilson ouch aye that's almost twice as more DVs than UVs :o

11:09 PM
155:6 on main Meta.

@Jenayah But I can't always scan the frontpage for stuff that is good and which I know enough about to judge if it is good each time I stumble across some bullshit ID question. ;-)

78:1579 is probably my most downvote-heavy account.

Um... what site?

@NapoleonWilson well we can point out some good questions maybe, but no guarantees it won't be biased ;)

It's hidden ;)

11:11 PM
@NapoleonWilson Just click on my profile instead of the front page.

@Alex Seems a little...Harry Pottery.

@NapoleonWilson not all of them

@NapoleonWilson It is. Though my top question is not Harry Potter.

heh, I have one non Harry Potter post
5*

@Niffler 6

11:15 PM
Go ask some good Mistborn questions (as long as they're not just useless allomancy rule-lawyering). Or Dark Tower.

@Niffler We overlap on one.

:)
harry potter, unger games, and darkest minds

@padfoot We meet again, Mr Padfoot. :) — Jenayah 2 hours ago

: )
oh yeah
thats on only sf
not movies/lit/arqade

Oh, apparently Winterbash does end in about 2 days. So much for my monopoly hat. :'(

11:18 PM
@Jenayah The correct terminology is "Fancy meeting you here".

eheh

Heh, thanks for the cleanup hint, muahahaha!

?

i've looked but not sure, would this be a dupe: What did Cameron see in the paining? (ferris bueller)

That Ferris Bueller? I doubt that's even on-topic.

11:32 PM
movies and tv
not sf
:)
i bet i could put it on sf
might be a bit of a push but...

Oh, but on SciFi it would most probably be a duplicate, though. ;-)

uh oh :/
i'll just ask it on arqade
:)

everything here is a duplicate.
Which makes me wonder. Is there a way to see Network statistics to see which site has the most duplicates?

Should be doable with SEDE?

@Alex no

11:44 PM
@Jenayah Okay, I exaggerated slightly.
@NapoleonWilson If there's an existing query...

@Alex I'm betting on SO.

@b_jonas If you're only going by total then probably.
But it would be interesting to see percentages as well.

Yeah.

For instance, going by the last 90 days, here there are an average of 2 duplicate closures per day.
More than 10 percent of questions have been closed as duplicates in the last 90 days.
Though I don't know if it counts twice a question that was reopened and then reclosed.
I only have one other site where I have access to these statistics, and the percentage of duplicates in the last 90 days is also around 10%.
