Q: What warp factor was the USS Equinox traveling at?

Q: Comic / Bande dessinée about a child that finds a spaceship

bukwyrmI'm looking for a french comic that i 'read' while in France about 25 years ago - I could not read much French at the time, which is why i only have very hazy ideas about the plot: Protagonist was a child that found a spaceship, which was as tiny as a toy. He/she took it home. The ship had some ...

Do we want Smokie in this room?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Offensive answer detected, toxic answer detected: An anime about a boy related to gems/crystals by Onlookers on scifi.SE

8:58 AM
Nah we have a smokie room
If people want to use it they'll go there

I'd say yes, it'd be more useful to have it here in the Restaurant.

SQB
@Mithrandir how many messages does Smokie post per day in SFF, on average?

SQB
Yeah, I was gonna say, 1 or 2 at the most.
So about as disruptive as the xkcd feed.
As a room owner, I invite Smokie in, then.

If it's already posted somewhere for people to see it I don't see why we need it here especially as not everyone wants to see negative comments and answers about the site because of it

9:04 AM
Huh?

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot it's spam and R/A detection.

@SQB If you want a more precise count: chat.stackexchange.com/…

Right the comment thing was misguided just change that word to questions and it still stands

SQB
I think we need to use every opportunity we have to flag that stuff asap.

Yes but in the main chat room where new users come in? I don't like that idea, there is already a room for it where people who want to use the tool can use it

9:06 AM
I'm in favor of manually pinging people when we see one

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot I see what you mean, but we don't have flocks of new users coming in daily.

We can set it up so it automatically deletes the message if it's marked as fp or the post is deleted, I think.

SQB
@Mithrandir That would be good. Who can mark it fp?

I still don't see the need for it here, I feel like it has more negative reasons against it than for it

@SQB Anyone with Smokey privileges. Usually feedback is given within seconds in Charcoal HQ; generally, feedback isn't accepted from rooms like this (although it's technically possible to set it up so it does).

9:08 AM
If it's not accepted then there's no point in having it here really

SQB
Let's give it a try for a couple of weeks, we can remove it again if it doesn't work.

Just leave it in the cleanup room

SQB
What are fp precentages on Smokie, @Mithrandir?
For SFF specifically, I mean.

Overall, or Scifi.SE specifically?

SQB
The latter.

Yeah, metasmoke appears to be down. When it's back up, I'll check.

Q: Who is the one that could beat Superman in a duel?

Sofonias AyeleI was wondering if their could be anyone who was able to defeat, or even challenge, Superman without utilizing his weakness. As far as I know he is capable of manipulating time by spinning fast around the earth and there are the other supernatural powers like super speed, strength, freeze breath,...

Q: What caused the death of superman?

And it was noted: Superman dies in Lois Lane's arms: Superman No. 75 (vol. 2, January 1993); Art by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding However, I haven't found any answer in this article. So my question: which incident caused Superm...

@SQB Please no.
1) Our community is already good at spotting and nuking spam.
2) There's already not only a general Smokey room (Charcoal HQ) but also an SFF-specific room for taking Smokey reports.
3) I don't want new users to come into the main site chatroom and be faced with spam and abusive links.

Smokey reports won't stay around for more than two minutes.

They stay in the SFF community cleanup room permanently.

Right. It's configurable per-room.

SQB
9:41 AM
1) So we'll be even better
2) But almost no-one ever goes there
3) What @Mith says

If I were a new user, I'd be creeped out to come in here (especially if nobody was chatting at the time) and see someone posting links to spam and abuse, even if they did delete those links after 2 minutes.

1) meh, we're already really quick so not much of a benefit
2) If you don't use it now what's the point in having it post here?
3) Even if they don't stay there's still a window to see them

SQB
@Mithrandir Are they removed, or can they be edited to read whatever the outcome is ("spam deleted", "false positive", and so on).

@Randal'Thor honestly I'd be more put off by a long drawn-out argument, which happens here often enough anyway
@SQB (removed)
@TheLethalCarrot re: 2.) there are already people here, so they'll be notced

@Mithrandir If something bad is happening in the room, surely we should be taking steps to stop that, rather than adding something else bad instead/as well.
@Mithrandir They're noticed anyway, by people on the site. I think there's more people actively browsing the main site than actively watching this chatroom at any given moment.

SQB
9:46 AM
How about having it run for two weeks, then evaluating?

^
Other rooms have had these in their main rooms for a long time, and I've never heard about any issues like the ones you're afraid of.

For what it's worth, I don't like the idea of having Smokey as a feed here, but I'm also not against trying it out. Only fools never change minds and all that

@Mithrandir Meh. I'm thinking of the times when nobody is chatting here and the room is just full of bot feeds and links to abuse.

That's very, very unlikely to happen, given the very small amount of reports Smokey reports on SFF.

And now with posts being one boxed we're already a feed room at some times of the day
When you say "it'll only be here for 2 minutes" is that 2 minutes regardless of if the post get's actioned or depends on it being deleted or what not?

9:52 AM
@Randal'Thor there's activity here though

@Mithrandir Hm? It's already exactly what the SFF community cleanup room looks like.

@Randal'Thor yeah but nobody chats there

If it's regardless and is deleted no matter what then there's not much point posting it here anyway
The people active enough to see the post in here are active enough on main to have already seen it

@TheLethalCarrot Well, there is if people are active here and see it in those two minutes.
Better than the alternative, which is to leave the links to bad stuff indefinitely if people aren't active here.

@Randal'Thor See above, most people who will see it in here are most likely to have already seen it

9:55 AM
@Randal'Thor "indefinitely" is ~10 minutes in this case

But sure I certainly don't want the links staying around

@TheLethalCarrot Well, that goes back to my point 1), namely that Smokey is mostly redundant on this site anyway because of our active community.

@TheLethalCarrot The message is deleted after the post is deleted or it's classified as a false positive.

@Randal'Thor And I wholeheartedly agree with that point

Or someone else decides to remove it.

9:56 AM
@Jenayah Yeah, I'm just thinking of the times of day when this room is quiet too.

FP = false positive? Oh my, I thought it was First Post :'D

@Mithrandir Classified as a false positive here, or would someone saying "f" in CHQ delete it here too?

Either.

And can you program it to delete after 2 minutes no matter what?

That I don't know.

9:57 AM
Also, how come I've seen so many Smokey reports in the SFF community cleanup room which don't get deleted? Is it not programmed to delete there?

OK. So it could be better here than there.

Oh, yeah, you can also poof the reports here.
So just saying sd poof will delete the report.
If it's within two minutes, that is.
Since Smokey only has regular privs.

That relies on someone being active in the room.

How does it delete reports normally then?

10:00 AM
And if they are, it's not so bad anyway.

When you say they're removed after 10 mins if deleted and what not

I didn't say that; I said it deletes them if the post is removed, meaning within the 2 minutes.
It probably wouldn't be too hard for someone who codes to set up an option for all reports in the room to be deleted after 2 minutes, but that's not currently an option.

"The message is deleted after the post is deleted or it's classified as a false positive.": So this only refers to the 3 minute window then?
Or do you mean this is solely a manual process?

That's only within the 2 minute window, yes.

A bot user can self-delete its own messages within 2 minutes just like anyone else.

10:09 AM
So we have potential for them staying around for longer than is desirable if they don't auto delete?
i.e. no room owner or mod around

Right. That is correct.

Not a fan of that

Q: Are there any restrictions on what a national flag should look like?

Most flags have layers of symbolic meaning representing the history and culture of the nation. I don't know why a blue-painted Satan walking in on someone doing something very naughty with strings is important to your new country, but it definitely seems like a fun place to be. — Giter 17 hours ago

@Randal'Thor well sure, if the carrot wants the easy comment without redirecting to the guide... :p
@TheLethalCarrot ok ok :)

@Jenayah Yeah. And it's a big trope too, with lots of fantasy works about it, and probably a page on TvTropes. Tomator's zoo in the Lost Vikings video game plays it for laugh. The Steven Universe TV show season 4 has an example that was very disturbing to me, especially because of how lightly Steven took it given the facts. Mind you, that show became very dark really quickly: S1 already ended bad, and early in S3 already had the most disturbing and darkest thing I ever saw in a TV show,
it still haunts me, and mind you, S2 was a half-length season (and so are S3 and S4 and S5).
I still haven't written down my thoughts about that show, but I will have to, eventually. I can't postpone it forever. It always helps, because then I can read other people's replies and explanations and the spoiler questions, and I'll understand the whole world better.
@Randal'Thor Yes.
(The majority of S2 was used for character building, to make me trust what that particular character says in early S3 and realize its implications.)

<---- doesn't watch Steven Universe, has no idea what you're talking about, but sure :D

That's a show that has some serious worldbuilding that isn't easy to prove inconsistent, and so I have to take the consequences very seriously. Basically, that's where we find out how BIG the war actually was. We always knew the show was focusing on a little remaining rebel fraction from a bigger war, but it's that episode when I found out the scale of the original war.
@Jenayah Well, you shouldn't have an idea, I'm trying not to spoil it too much.

I think Hulk would have killed him by body slamming him against the side...

@SQB Finally. Thank you for inviting him here.

Q: Late 1980's era film about thick white paste controlling people

Erin BWhen I was much younger, my brother and I recall watching a movie at a sci-fi convention. The premise of the movie is that there's some white paste, resembling marshmallow fluff, that enters the market and everyone eats it and starts acting mysteriously, and becomes addicted to eating it and forc...

scifi.stackexchange.com/q/189877/4918 "Short story about a magical rose that keeps “the horde” away from a palace" – I think this already has right answer, but doesn't this sound a bit similar to a story in Sapkowski's Witcher for you? I know it's not the same, just mentioning.

11:06 PM
I'm loving Red Hood and the Outlaws Rebirth (finished volume 3, waiting for volume 4 to come out)
Should I read the New 52 series?

@CorvoAttano weeeeellll...
To be honest there were pretty awful ROATH in the New 52 run.

However, there's a relationship between two characters which was well developed, and will likely be relevant in the upcoming Rebirth issues.

With Roy Harper, you mean?

Aye

11:12 PM
I heard he was important in the series
That Starfire design was horrible

He wasn't so far in Rebirth Outlaws. With the latest issue... that might very well change.
By the way, I agree that Rebirth Outlaws comics are awesome.
@CorvoAttano if it was only a matter of design...
On a side comment, Roy Harper's been important in the Rebirth Titans.

What New 52 comics should I read? Only read a bit of Aquaman

@CorvoAttano the Aquaman runs were excellent, Geoff Johns did a great job with those
The Justice League ones had both great arcs (what can I say? I loved the Amazo one, even if it wasn't very well received) and debatable ones (... that ending felt wrong.)

11:29 PM
I could never keep it all straight. First there was New 52. Then like two years later they were like “nah, do-over” And did a completely different New 52. For all I know they’ve done it a couple more times. Can’t keep track any more.

@Broklynite you mean with Rebirth?

@Jenayah I honest to goodness have no idea.

That was more like 5 years, and to be honest they pull up that trick almost every decade :)

Similarly when the whole Black Lantern thing started and then there were all the parallel series for the different colors and blah blah blah

Wait

11:31 PM
there comes a point where I simply can’t follow any more and I just don’t care enough to do so. More power to those of you who do, but it’s too much for me, I feel overwhelmed.

There was another color of Lantern series?!

This is partly why I miss my old local comic book store. They knew me there and could recommend things for me because they knew my taste. Great people. I miss it. It’s still there but I moved to another state.

@CorvoAttano generally speaking, I liked the usual ones, The Flash, Green Lantern, Shazam etc. There were awful ones like the new 52 Titans.
@CorvoAttano the one about the Reds? Yeah, but it doesn't have as much issues as the main one

There was a white lantern series at the same time, and I’m pretty sure I saw a red lantern one too. Don’t remember exactly. But the issues were all seemingly coming out at the same time.

Also, there's a bunch one 10-pagers about each color
And of course there's the big Blackest Night event/crossover/thingy

11:34 PM
Oh yea and then there was the whole Brightest Day thing after that. It makes my head spin even now.

@Broklynite yeah that's the time GJ and co were like "f*** yeah, every color gets a Lantern Corps"

Q: Pulp era book, spaceship accidentally time travels back to the Old Testament, saves Jonah

David HansenI remember some pieces of the story. It was a small but FTL cabable ship, I seem to remember some kind of military discipline, they were doing something routine (patrol?) when "things went wrong". They end up hiding under the water, a female tries to make telepathic contact with the people on a...

Which was great with the seven main ones

Ungh. And seriously, Kyle is the guy who can use all the colors? Really?

It become okay-ish with the Black and White Lanterns but why not

11:35 PM
kyle’s a twerp.

And then there was the Phantom Ring and you're like "oh, come on, move on guys"

Sorry, I’ll take that back, that’s a statement of taste, and I don’t want to get into an argument with anyone

And THEN they bring up the ULTRAVIOLET Corps and "Holy- guys, get a life!"

the dig at Kyle I mean
ultraviolet?
was there an infrared?

@Broklynite which version of Kyle are you talking about?

11:36 PM
im a chemist I must know. Was there a Radio corps? X-rays? Gamma Corps, that would be awesome!

(by the way, he's back to Green nowadays because reasons)

@Jenayah I don’t know, all of them.
I can just imagine it now, the Infrared Corps
”what emotion do you guys control?”

@Broklynite original Kyle suffered from the "yup let's add a fourth Earth Green Lantern" syndrome (only went downhill with Baz and Cruz), then Kyle got... okayish, new 52 Kyle was OP, nowadays Kyle's just great ahah. Even if they pull up too much with the "I'm an artist lulz" rope.

”fire.”
”fire’s not an emotion.”
”neither is willpower, what’s your point?”

@Broklynite ahem avarice? :p

11:41 PM
@Jenayah wait, what?

I'd vouch for a Grey Corps next. Something between the Black Undead and the White Life.
@Broklynite well, Orange greed doesn't exactly qualify as an emotion, does it?

@Jenayah sorry was afk. Isn’t that really just another word for desire? I mean when it comes down to it, desire is an emotion.

(don't get me wrong, I don't want Larfleeze gone. Larfleeze is awesome.)

Sorry, I don’t remember the various color meanings

@Broklynite well, yeah, I guess
Red = rage
Orange = greed
Yellow = fear
Green = willpower
Blue = hope

11:48 PM
Fear
really

Pink/violet = love
Indigo = compassion

i mean, Sinestro always struck me as being terrified out of his mind. As was the rest of the yellow lantern corps.

Black = death
White = life

Life and death are also not emotions
indigo isn’t a color

Phantom = whatever you're feeling the most between the above
Ultraviolet = garbage
@Broklynite it's the opposite, it's the capacity of instilling great fear

11:50 PM
@Jenayah I can’t tell if you’re joking or not on the garbage

Q: How does taking the spirit of another immortal work?

AdamantLian Ji said that an immortal could regain their powers by killing another immortal and consuming their spirit. She said that a weak immortal could do this to a strong immortal, but that if a strong immortal tried to take the spirit of a weak immortal, it wouldn't work. This presumably would impl...

Which is stupid. Granted.

yes. Yes it is.

@Broklynite Sinestro is in the Ultraviolet Corps by the way. LOL.

But I mean a decent enough story I can overlook a certain amount of stupid
whaaaaa
no that’s it, I’m done, I’m heading to bed.
Lovely chatting, thank you for taking my mind off of the news, have a good night

11:52 PM
Also, Sinestro looks like a weird goblin.
@Broklynite always happy to bash stupid writing with a fellow mate :D good night!
