Q: RIP Harlan Ellison

MithrandirHarlan Ellison, author of many SFF works, passed away June 27, 2018, at the age of 84. He had written a multitude of short stories and novels, as well as TV episodes such as "The City on the Edge of Forever" from Star Trek. For a brief time, I was here; and, for a brief time, I mattered. ...

@Mithrandir beautiful quotes.

SQB
@Broklynite so is your grandfather an author as well?

@SQB yea but he was primarily an editor. Old First Fandom folks, but not a famous name.

Now I'm curious, of course.

@Broklynite there might be a good story in there for the SFF-blog, actually.

@SQB I wasn’t aware there was a blog. I dunno about stories; my grandparents were both Fans, I used to have some of the old magazines with their letters in the back (back when that was how people organized meetups).
But I know because of his work, and the era and all, they all knew each other. I think I remember my father saying that my grandfather was Van Vogt’s editor for a while, but I don’t know how true that is.

SQB
@Broklynite that used to be a joke for a while here: "we have a blog?" But I've a feeling you're serious. There should be a link to the latest blog post pinned on the side bar, but I'm on mobile so I can't check. It might be one of Dr. Dizzle's movie reviews instead.

I should say that I know plenty of stories, no doubt my mother knows many more. It’s difficult to separate fact from fiction tho. You never know though, I ran into Chris clairemont a couple of years ago and confirmed that yes indeed he was my next door neighbor for many years.

SQB
Then again, autocomplete didn't work for them, so I guess not.

@SQB I’m mostly here on mobile these days, that’s likely why

SQB
Ah.
There you go.

4:45 PM
Interesting, thanks

SQB
Latest posts are by @CreationEdge, so you could ask them.
I know our resident earthling-greeter has written an interesting one about genres, some time ago.
I greatly enjoyed that one, @Donald.McLean.

Heh. If you want to hear something funny, I can dig up the episode of This American life where they interviewed my mother about my grandfather
he wrote a hippie self help book back in the 60’s
Here we go

The focus is on the book and not so much his earlier life in SF I’m afraid

SQB
Ah, This American Life. I used to listen to that a lot.

4:50 PM
I don’t tend to but I made an exception here
nothing against it, you understand, it’s just that I usually have more things higher on my life of priorities

SQB
To me, it depicted a kind of America that gelled well of my idea of America, as absorbed through films and television.

i haven’t listened to it enough to comment I’m afraid

SQB
Sort of like A Prairie Home Companion.

I used to listen to that a lot as a kid, especially the tales from Lake Woebegone
it didn’t help, I suppose, that the only radios I’ve ever owned were from a few years ago when I bought myself a shower radio

SQB
I've several of the books.
I think three or four.

4:54 PM
i think I had one, but it wasn’t the same reading it as hearing Garrison

SQB
I've never heard him, just read the books.

eho I am told is no longer in the show because of something to do with sexual harassment

SQB
I used it as a shorthand for the universe.
I think I've read that, yes.

ahhh, he had a very quiet and dry humor that nonetheless managed to express itself very well
i dunno, I don’t think the cadence of his voice translates into plain text.
You should see if you can get one of the old recordings

4:58 PM
anyway, I’m about to climb into an automobile and get carsick, so I’m afraid I need to go. I’ll be around tho.

SQB
I've just arrived at my destination. Now it's only a short walk home.
Have a good trip!
