Q: How does Nebula really feel about Gamora?

Marathon to MayIn the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Nebula (when she is firing on her sister Gamora) says: "Out of all our siblings, I hated you least." I just realized I can use the Wayback machine to go to the old Pottermore! I want so bad to do it today, but it's late and I'm going to bed.

2:37 AM
@OldBunny2800 Sorry, doesn't work that way. The old Pottermore had a login screen. :(
It also relied heavily on flash, something not well supported by the waybackmachine.
You can use the wayback machine to view most of the old jkrowling.com (via the "text only" accessibility version.)
The old Pottermore however is gone.

2:51 AM
@ibid That said, most or all of its content is preserved on other websites (people’s blogs, etc) which in turn can be or have been archived.

Awww ;(
I liked the moving through the story and the potions class

@Adamant Most of the content (or at least of Rowling's content) is preserved on the new Pottermore. The only exceptions are the QWC articles, the textbooks, and the timeline. The non-Rowling writing bits are often preserved by pottermore.wikia.com. The artwork can mostly be found here. The interactive elements are gone (but you can find plenty of blogs/Youtube videos describing them).
@OldBunny2800 Don't know about Potions. (Does the sample potion for non-users work on the Wayback Machine?) For the story, I'd suggest browsing through this Google Drive in alphabetical order.

3:15 AM
Why did JK have to get rid of that stuff!? Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.
Wait.. aren't those just images?

3:51 AM
@OldBunny2800 By "story", I thought you meant the moments.
The writings can still be mostly found on the new Pottermore. I have a list of links in this answer.
@OldBunny2800 The old Pottermore was clearly closed due to money reasons. (Interactive websites cost a lot to run.) As to why some of the writings vanished, I have various theories.

SQB
I have my towel at hand.
But a announcement might be in order.

We need to pin a meaningful message about towels.
But what's the deal with the towels? I didn't get it from the film.

> “A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors;
> you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you);
> you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”

It's one of the better running jokes from the book. The movie didn't really go into it because it's a joke primarily in the narration and exposition.

> More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc.
> Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

coincidentally I do have a towel next to me right now, but that's mostly because I left it out here and never got around to putting it back wherever it's supposed to be

I mean, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean clearly form a trilogy. That's more than just an opinion, that can be argued with facts.
Sorry, supported with facts is what I meant.

@SQB I assume that ep 4, 5 and 6 are meant to be a trilogy too. And once again the "first" movie is more loosely tied to the arc story than the other two.
I have yet to see the fifth movie, but the trailer pretty cleared states that the movie is again a two part story.

As far as I know,Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge is actually a sequel of sorts to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End rather than Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Mainly because Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sucks.

@Gallifreyan my "bad videogame adaptation" sense is tingling

It's Netflix, so I'm assuming best intentions and maximum effort.

@Gallifreyan yeah, right. Max effort and accuracy.

@Derpy So what, as long as he's acting good.
Try to bring up the Ancient One from Dr. Strange.
Or Keanu Reeves from Constantine.

@Gallifreyan Who's talking shit about the Ancient One?

@Gallifreyan call me conservative, but if the original character was portrayed in a way I feel somehow distracted when the adaptation actor does not look at all like the original.
Also, just suppose the same actor was chosen to play... Frodo?

11:26 AM
@Derpy What'd be wrong with that?

@DrRDizzle Falls in the same set of reasons I wouldn't use Depardieu to play in the role of Ariel in a The Little Mermaid remake.
Also know as the first rule of the cosplayer:

I sort of agree with you, but I can't see those being in the same set of reasons.

> If you are cosplaying a character and want to take part in a context, please try to at least vaguely look like the character you are cosplaying

Which LotR movie adaption was the most faithful to the books?

@Derpy Then it's a good job that there is a lot more to consider when casting actors than when dressing up as a character for fun.

11:31 AM
This ain't cosplay - this is an adaptation.

Ultimately, physical appearance is one of the least important aspects of most characters.

@DrRDizzle Considering that L physical appearance is pretty tied to his character... I won't completely agree on this one.

@Derpy Well, I said most. Like, it's of no importance if Frodo were a black hobbit instead of a white one. But in regards to L, how so?

@DrRDizzle that was an hyperbole. That said, do "black hobbits" even exist in the source material (and wouldn't it feel a little strange to have Frodo end up as the only black hobbit in the shire?)?

@Derpy It doesn't matter if they exist in the source material or not. And the simple solution to that is to make sure that Frodo isn't the only non-white hobbit in the Shire.

11:41 AM
@DrRDizzle very "weak" physical appearance, very pale skin (probably sign of a lack of sunlight since he mostly does his research indoor), eye bags that seems to indicate sleep deprivation, lives on sugar filled foods to "give more energy to his brain" and so on. Based on the actor they settled with, I fear all of this was thrown out of the window. But I will be very glad if I was mistaken.
@DrRDizzle agree. That is what "adaptation" means. It is not supposed to be entirely like the original. It is just that I somehow fear that the adaptation could drift in the 'something almost, but not quite entirely unlike tea' range.

"something almost, but not quite entirely unlike tea" - I have no idea what that means.
@Derpy All of those things can still be true with a black actor. Hell, if I remember correctly from Get Out, the actor they cast as L is pretty lanky.

@DrRDizzle you assumed that I was just talking about the white-to-black thing? Actually, if that was the only change I wouldn't really have much to say (other than I would have preferred a "are you even alive" pale color), I just fear for the character characterization as a whole. Also, probably begin a fan of the original anime/manga version plays it role there, by what I mean that when I think of L i automatically think of the very pale guy.
@DrRDizzle ..... Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy reference.

I'd have to agree that L really needs to look at least somewhat like L, more so than the vast majority of characters in adaptations
at least it sure felt deliberate in the manga that Light looked exactly like the socially ideal young man and L looked like the exact opposite of that yet they had so much in common except for Light being the one secrectly doing evil things

11:57 AM
That is true.
Meh, it's all pointless until we see the first episode.

...I also just realized I implied that that adaptation chose a black man as "the exact opposite of socially ideal"...oh god I hope that wasn't the intent

Then it'll be like with Doctor Who and the regenerations.

yeah hopefully

Aaand I'm gone to my MATLAB final exam.
Phew.
See you all! on the other side

@Ixrec You might not have intended it, but the show might've. The guy they cast as Light is the blandest, safest looking white guy you could ever imagine - what if the contrast between the two is deliberate, commenting on the perception of race in America?

12:00 PM
maybe
that's gonna be quite the can of worms

@DrRDizzle actually, I think they have even stated that in an interview. Which is why I will probably still try and watch the movie when it is released

Maybe, but it could also give this adaption real purpose.
@Derpy Excellent.

for an American adaptation of it that might actually be the perfect way to go

that said, the guy need to sit down "L style" at least once in the movie

finally wiki'd this and realized we're talking about a new thing and not one of the old live action deathnote things

12:03 PM

yeah he's gotta have at least some eccentric behaviors to be any kind of L

@Ixrec you mean the not-existent ones? The ones where a mayor plot device (you cannot make it so that the death of a person due to the death note influence or cause the death of other people) is simply ignored?

maybe, I'm not familiar with them
I'm pretty familiar with the manga in part because it's one of the first ones I bought in both languages to help teach myself Japanese, but I don't think I've ever seen any of the adaptations

hello
@Derpy Can you elaborate on the ignored plot devices? I'm not too familiar with the manga.

konnichiwa

12:11 PM
appropriate!

So I've come to the conclusion that the Supergirl acting is cringey

@zabeus I will have to check the source material again from the 200(6?) live action movies - I watched them only once and that was enough for me. Anyway....
> Whether the cause of the individual's death is either a suicide or accident, if the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced.
the same concept is restated multiple time in the rules.
You cannot write something like "Mr Brown will die jumping down a cliff after shooting and killing 10 peoples in the area" because the note won't allow the life of those ten people to be influenced "directly"

12:28 PM
I hear on Anime & Manga.SE there's a running joke about questions with ridiculous DeathNote rules-lawyering

(a common question is what would happen if you cause the death of the only available pilot on an airplane, dooming all the passenger in the process. The common answer is that the death would took place since you aren't causing the death of other people directly)

i see
well apparently if you call something "adaptation" you can change anything about it so i'm sure they would have no problem changing all those rules in the new one too

That said, in the 2006 movie those rules are violated at least once because someone is written to die after shooting and killing someone else

that sounds familiar

@zabeus yep, but sadly the 2006 movies were never intended as and "adaptation" but more of a "porting"
That said.... changing that detail basically destroys all the plot of the anime.
The mayor point was that Light couldn't just kill off L because he didn't know L real name and just writing "Mr Brown has an heart attack after killing L" would NOT work
If he had the ability to just do that... the anime would probably have ended up MUCH shorter ^_^

12:34 PM
true, for all we know the new one might have a completely opposite ending to satisfy western audiences

@zabeus well, in the 2006 movies L "wins"

a pyrrhic victory for sure

Nothing special has happened by that point, the colony ship and its crew and cargo (~40 crewmembers, 2000 colonists, a number of frozen human embryos) are still supposed to be save (not just presumably s...

Q: What happened to the cryopod?

O. R. MapperWhen the colony ship Covenant has suffered some severe damage some people aboard the ship die. Why? What happened to that cryopod? At least on-screen, none of the crew seemed to be concerned about establishing the specific nature of the technical failure, which makes me think that the ob...

Q: 1960s British SF TV episode - Fantasy Dream

Martin I remember an episode of a TV series, I guess late 60s/early 70s. The protagonist (I think a writer) seems to have spells where he becomes some kind of SF/Fantasy warrior in an alien or future world. I vaguely remember plastic armour and a sword or ray pistol. It could be that the setting is from...

Q: Why didn't Harry Potter marry Hermione?

Saeed ur RehmanI am confused about the marriage of Harry Potter and Ron's sister, and why he didn't marry Hermione. Any idea?

@Adamant we will just have to disagree lol. cause i am on the Double H Train

Why was this question reopened? It's a dupe of at least two questions.

6:52 PM
Because none of the answers cover wandless and verballess magic. At least not from the answers I read

are you saying it has to be "wandless and verballess"? because the other answer covers "wandless or verballess"

well that's what the question asks for

Q: Why didn't Hermione get an Outstanding in her Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L.?

The Dark LordIn her fifth year Hermione clearly knew the Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook, upon which the theory exam was partly based, back to front. “What is it this time, Miss Granger?” “I’ve already read chapter two,” said Hermione. “Well then, proceed to chapter three.” “I’ve read that to...

i see

@Edlothiad Pretty sure mine did.

Why do you guys keep duping my question. None of those other questions are covering wandless AND nonverbal AT THE SAME TIME.

They're just mean and want to show off their gold badges.

it's not Mos SFF without duping arguments

Q: Can you pick up Thor's hammer?

stevenvancIn the Avengers Age of Ultron they make a big deal about picking up Thor's hammer. When they are on the aircarrier the hulk tries to pick it up and he can't... But the aircarrier (or earlier a table) does support it? Does that mean it only works on "living things"? Because when you follow this lo...

Their just immature. Leave it, or delete the question. There are examples in those answers I guess that do cover that

7:23 PM
@Edlothiad it's just an honest disagreement and/or misunderstanding

Y'all should discuss this on the question or in meta.
Chat isn't a good venue for settling matters like this, and the fact meta takes time & isn't instant lets people keep their heads cool.

^
for some reason on StackExchange nothing exudes authority like leading with "y'all"

@Edlothiad that's exactly how it is. show those ice cubes what-for.
@Ixrec my goodness, you're right.

7:41 PM
@Ixrec It's because Shog talks that way.

@Adamant yes, that was the joke =P

oh huh, really?

Am I too late?

@amflare Some of the answers to those questions do bring examples of wandless nonverbal magic. Here on SFF we usually dupe close based on answers as well as questions.

originally I was going to post Joker's "don't explain the joke!" image but doppelgreener forced me to go with the owl instead

Q: How is the post-credit scene in "Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" not a plot hole?

JackItaSo in the post-credit scene but there is no reasonable explanation for that: even if he magically came back to life like the crew of Salazar, Does anyone have a theory or an explanation for that?

Q: Why did Lockhart's spell stop at the arm?

DCOPTimDowdWhen Lockhart tried healing Harry's arm and ended up removing his bones, why did the spell only affect his arm? As bad as Lockhart is with magic, it's not impossible to imagine him turning Harry into a pool of skin soup with the wrong flick of the wrist, so what stopped the spell from dissolving ...

Why do we call so? Where does it extend from? It's not connected to anything else.

DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is an American media franchise and shared universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, based on characters that appear in publications by DC Comics. The shared universe, much like the original DC Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast and characters. The films have been in production since 2011 and in that time Warner Bros. has distributed three films with more than ten in various stages of production. The series has grossed over $2.2 billion at the global box office...
It's the official terminology.

@Catija Huh. Alright, one less meta post from me.

We have the same tag on M&TV

9:46 PM
@Babelfish sigh Don't know what to do about this one.
It's sorta answerable (I guess, if one watches the film carefully), but the guy's attitude is interesting.

I'm honestly not a fan of "Did I find a plot hole" questions...

@Catija It makes sense as a question, but it seems to me that asking about a post-credit scene in a film that's just been out and asking for "theories" doesn't make it a good question.
Why don't I vote to close it and see what happens...

I don't know the SFF rules on future works.

Woo hoo! I made it to 1k rep!
I can see all votes now!
I feel so powerful!
maniacal laugh

@DCOPTimDowd Congrats! Although it's not much fun until you get to 10k, when you can peek at what other people do.

@Null Killjoy.

@Null This whole time?! <sob>
@Gallifreyan Didn't know you were a voyeur

@Gallifreyan And that's not as much fun as when you get a diamond and users don't realize you can see deleted comments.

@DCOPTimDowd Yeah, you get to see other people's reviews and smack them occasionally for robo-reviewing.
@Null Duly noted :D

@Null that is a blessing and a curse. They're deleted for a reason, like spam answers, which do not get screened behind a "deleted as spam/abusive, click here to view anyway" link when you're a mod either. D':

@doppelgreener You chose being a mod and doing or dirty work - suffer for it.

@Gallifreyan Thank you for the commendable support, citizen. Your thank-you gift of a box of cobras will be in the mail shortly.
I'm OK with it though. I actually find being a moderator pretty fulfilling.

@doppelgreener Your work will not be forgotten! (except it will, and the only remnant of it will be the election page)

@Gallifreyan Thank you for your continued reassurance, citizen.

@Gallifreyan I'm perfectly fine with users forgetting about the work I've done as a mod. If they forget about it that means they aren't posting questions on meta about why I declined a flag or whatever.

@Null That simply means they care; I'm always assuming best intentions, though it was hard in case of this guy (Pirates 5 spoilers!)

Q: What does the train guard shout in Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets?

MahkoeIn some of the Harry Potter movies, the train guard at King's Cross station shouts something. It sounds like "Egg jewel on!" Philosopher's stone: Chamber of Secrets: Must be some kind of railway slang, or maybe in a thick accent...

And I'm done being awake for today - good night!

Good night.

@Gallifreyan Goodnight!
@Null That's true. :D The things moderators do is keep things peaceful, handle trouble, etc -- it's the kind of job people notice most when you're doing it badly. (Kinda like UIs. People won't even think about a good UI, but they'll really notice an awful one.)

@doppelgreener Yes, people notice either when you're doing it badly or a user has done so much damage that there's no way to hide it. Either way, it's not a good thing.

11:12 PM
@Null At the end of the day, in my opinion, having a short memory on who said what tends to make things easier within a group. I refer to such actions as pressing the reset button

Q: Fantasy-style book cover with merchants and an elephant-sized pack animal

Laird Bruce BoughnerI am remembering a novel from the 80s, I've never read it but the cover was in the vein of Darrell K. Sweet, Don Maitz or Michael Whelan and featured the gates of a city with merchants are coming and going. One merchant is leading a pack animal that is elephant-sized. Ring any bells?
