Q: looking for a novel—perhaps from the eighties—about King Solomon

BarnabyAround forty years ago, standing in a bookstore, I read the first chapter of a novel: the opening was set in King Solomon's court, at the moment that he was recounting to his courtiers his dream (described in the bible at 1 Kings 3:4-15). I think the scene is being described by a scribe or some o...

Q: what’s the name of the cartoon where the main characters two boys and a girl could turn into a mantis, hummingbird and chameleon?

Anastasia Kit was not a series, but a single cartoon. (if I'm not mistaken there was one of the Egyptian gods) two boys and a girl traveled with a small chameleon, praying mantis and hummingbird. children and animals (let's call them talismans) could interact with each other and transform into superheroes, ...

The recent question about why people get isekaied got me thinking of another question that I keep debating as to whether to post, namely why there's such a focus on cooking in isekai. It sometimes seems like every other comic has the characters describe in detail how they're cooking a dish (which is generally some traditional Japanese good) and then there are multiple pages of everyone enthusing about how it's the most delicious thing they've ever eaten.

Q: Why does Superman wear a cape(In Universe)?

shanuSuperman has been wearing a cape since his first appearance and was perhaps the man who made the concept of capes popular. But a scene from The Incredibles (2010), specifically the one with Edna and her general dislike of capes made me wonder - Why does Superman wear a cape? We al know Batman wea...

Q: Galactic Empress with nude female guards book

Danny Mc GI read a SF book many (40-50) years ago but I can barely remember any plot or characters. Only one thing sticks in my mind, there was like a galactic empress and, chained before her throne, she had maybe half a dozen 'nekkid wimmin' to act as her final bodyguards - I think they had brain implants...

@Marvin I think even if a jet engine or rocket snagged Superman's cape, it wouldn't hurt Superman significantly, so Edna Mode's arguments don't apply.
Mr. Incredible is tough but not as tough as Superman.
@Marvin read 40..50 years ago. that's not something I see often in new posters' ID questions
It probably also limits the choices, I can't imagine that there were many sci-fi books like that over 40 years ago.

Q: Vampire book with white dress cover (showing bare feet)

Ashley JacquesThe book contained shapeshifters that could transform into animals that weren’t your usual picks. Like armadillos etc. The vampire who changed the main character had a type of control over her and her thoughts. The restaurant she worked at also had a vampire theme briefly I believe!

@b_jonas You might be surprised; it's not large percentage, true, but there is a fairly consistent fraction of them.
@b_jonas Hmm... You haven't read a lot of late 60s/early 70s SF, have you?

Q: Why does everyone in Harry Potter make a giant cauldron of potion?

SilvermidnightEveryone takes Potions in Harry Potter . . . but why does everyone make a giant pot of potion each time? The final result is a small vial that is nowhere near the size of the cauldron. Besides the disproportionate potion vs. vial amount, making such a large amount seems like a waste of materials....

^ I think this is partly also because of very specific instructions about stirring: "According to the book, he had to stir counter-clockwise until the potion turned clear as water. According to the addition the previous owner had made, however, he ought to add a clockwise stir after every seventh counter-clockwise stir. Could the old owner be right twice?" It would be harder to do that in a tiny testing tube
@DavidW Not unless you count Asimov's classics
also I guess Heinlein's Time Enough for Love qualifies and has naked females, though not as bodyguards chained to a throne

2:01 PM
That would explain it. There was definitely sex (or at least sexual situations) in a lot of works from that era or even before.

Wait a moment, The Naked Sun is from 1957 and has one naked female too.

But not, notably, in Asimov. I think in Currents of Space he actually had an implied sex scene and it stood out for being unusual.
If you're looking for naked women in chains look no further than Howard. (But seriously, don't look, it's execrable fiction.)

@DavidW yes, Asimov specifically has very few, but The Naked Sun has nudity and "The Gods Themselves" has clear depictions of sex. The Robots of Dawn would also count but it's too late for that era.
@DavidW you have a point, Time Enough for Love almost has naked slaves in chains
But I figured Heinlein is unusual compared to most sci-fi

Nah, not so much. Farmer had more explicit sex, I think maybe Dick too?

I'd also like the point out that OP was old enough 50 years ago to read books about naked women.

Q: Would an XNA based organism be immune to all pathogens?

7678687678686 9890809809808XNA is a nucleic acid analogue that could hypothetically be used by an organism in place of DNA. and is "invisible" to natural biological systems. In medical applications, it has the advantage of being resistant to breakdown by nucleases. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2909387/ http...
