Q: TV series with a girl who travel to the past with a mirror and meets an exiled Russian prince

arkadesI'm looking for a TV series I watched years ago, maybe in the '90s or in the 2000s. The main character is a girl who travels to the past through a mirror. The mirror is at the exact same place in two time periods, and opens a passage between them. She lives in the present and the past is around 1...

Q: Story about human-alien sex toys

Barry HaworthI am trying to find a story which I think I heard on a podcast sometime in the last ten years or so. The protagonist of the story was the proprietor of a shop which sold advanced sex toys which could interface with the human nervous system so that once strapped on they could transmit sensation -...

Q: Which elements of "Lady Hotspur" are based on "Henry IV" or actual history?

AdamantThe book Lady Hotspur is a take on the play Henry IV, Part 1 that adapts some plot elements, but goes in a more fantastical direction. For instance, several characters are gender-swapped, there is magic, and so forth. Some of the inspirations are obvious: Prince Calepia "Hal" Bolinbroke is Prince...

Q: Did Celeda kill Vindomata's sons?

AdamantIn Lady Hotspur, Vindomata's anger over her belief that Queen Celeda had assassinated her sons during the rebellion was a major motivating factor in her joining Banna Mora's side, which in turn was the only way that Innis Lear had the support needed to invade Aremoria. On the one hand, Celeda den...

Q: What's the initial meaning of Doctor?

ShadeIn Doctor Who, S6E7, we learn that we got the word Doctor for being a healer / wise from the doctor: RIVER: This was exactly you. All this. All of it. You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you'd become this? The man who ...

Q: Was the Doc Brown picking up Marty and Jennifer from 1985, from 2015, or from another year?

SQBAt the end of the first Back to the Future film, we see Doc Brown picking up Marty and Jennifer in 1985 to come rescue their kids in 2015. I've always assumed him to be a 1985-ish Doc, who had traveled into the future and kept an eye on Marty and his family. But it occurred to me that we can't be...

@Randal'Thor O_o
I drifted away from a combination of Harry Potter Q&A fatigue, JKR having … opinions, and too-many-inbox-itis. I actually didn't realise I'd hit the milestone until I got the link on Twitter: twitter.com/PureFerret/status/1411488468652462084
And I've only just checked the username and the avatar on SFF and realised the connection, huh

Q: Anime: Please, help identifying a tank movie (late 70s-80s). Relatively mature script

GantonI remember having seen a very-well-done anime movie where the main characters were human but a key character was their intelligent tank, which ended up giving its life to protect its crew. I saw the movie the late 70s or the beginning of the 80s and its script was not childish, but a relatively m...

Q: Who were the 30 Rebel pilots who fought for the Alliance during the Battle of Yavin?

Bingo MehndraFor years, everywhere (including Canon/legends) it has been said that a total 30 Rebel ships were deployed in the assault on the Death Star during the battle of Yavin. Most of the sources list the total number, type and squadron color of the ships, but mention a few names, as follows: 8 Y-Wings (...

Q: Do you really need to read “The Silmarilion” before reading “The Children of Húrin”, “Beren and Lúthien” or “The Fall of Gondolin”?

WadeThe answer to this question suggests you should read The Silmarilion and only then go on to read the three "great tales", which are The Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien or The Fall of Gondolin. But is it really important to read The Silmarilion before you read The Children of Húrin, Beren and...

Q: What to read in History of Middle-earth?

Raul Valdez Jr.I’m interested in reading some Lord of the Rings books but I’m wondering which ones to start with having to do with History of Middle-earth. Are they all important or can one just read The Silmarillion?

Q: In what order should Tolkien's writings on Middle-earth be read?

Travis ChristianI've already read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which I assume would be the best start in any case. I also got about halfway through The Silmarillion several years ago and am quite familiar with the legendarium as a whole, but for the sake of argument let's assume I'm starting from scratc...

On the one hand, it asks about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as well, on the other hand, it has a very good answer that explains about The Silmarillion and the Great Tales trilogy.

Q: Asimov story about a man who can do calculations on paper

Steve OI'm trying to find a short story by Asimov–I don't think it could be anyone else–where a mid-level office worker brings an underling in to see the boss, and asks the underling to demonstrate to the boss that he can actually add numbers by making marks on paper. More astounding, the underling has ...
