Q: Aliens lifting quarantine on Earth

Cyprian La ToucheI am looking for the name of a short Sci Fi story that I read in the 70’s where aliens welcome back humans to the cosmic community because they have found the cure for people being born white. And it is NOT "Hostess" by Isaac Asimov. It was in a collection of short stories (I think) titled A Spac...

Q: A 1960s short science fiction story that ends with the phrase “then the floor drops out”

expertbooksIt was a short story about a group of people (scientists?) from earth on an alien planet. One member of the group notices herds of small, yellow creatures that feed on the grass of the planet. The man tries the grass and finds it is hallucinogenic. He eats it several times, only to find he no ...

Q: Why didn't the executioners follow the rope to Buckbeak?

J. MiniI'm currently reading the penultimate chapter of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and I can only assume that my reading comprehension has completely failed me. As I understand it, Buckbeak is tied to a fence by a rope and Harry has grabbed this rope and used it to drag Buckbeak in to th...

Q: SF colony novel, most likely from before 1972

Klaus Æ. MogensenA librarian friend received the following query about a novel a customer read long ago. I hope somebody can help: The situation is that it can be foreseen that the Earth will collapse / break down - for whatever reason I do not remember - perhaps pollution. To prevent this from causing the annih...

@Alex Sure the upvote doesn't disappear as soon as you cancel the dialogue? I've seen similar in other places, like when you run out of votes and the upvote flashes up for a short moment. That's likely because it renders client-side before checking it into the database.

The upvote doesn't show at all anymore for anon users when clicking it like it used to but it did IIRC and the dialogue has changed. I guess it's just the old behaviour of the app and it will disappear on closing the dialogue

Granted, I'm not one of the 5 people to ever use the app.

I used the app for like a week before it was officially unsupported

Q: Why are Hope and Janet's surname's van Dyne and not Pym?

TheLethalCarrotJanet and Hope's surnames in the MCU are van Dyne yet Hank's is Pym. Janet is married to Hank and Hope is their daughter. It is usually the case that a wife will take their husband's surname upon marriage and the daughter will then take that name as well. I've seen the theory that Janet didn't t...

Q: What are the daughters of Marvel superheroes?

Tony ByrdCan you tell me what are the daughters of Marvel superheroes?

@Mithical Yes.
@NapoleonWilson The upvote is there from when I placed it a week ago. It hasn’t disappeared.

If you go to the post when logged in outside of the app is the upvote there and is there only one? (not conclusive obviously but a place to start)
It might just be that it shows the upvote to the anon user only

@TheLethalCarrot The upvote is there from when I placed it a week ago. There is some bug as of a couple of months ago that makes you have to re-register every time you visit a Meta site. It’s just interesting that it can’t remember that I am a member of the site but it can retain my upvote.

Oh so the UV is from a user account, the bug is that it just forgets you're a member?
Well that's a different thing entirely then haha

@TheLethalCarrot It’s a real upvote. The post actually has a whole bunch of upvotes, but with all the downvotes the score is actually just 1.
@TheLethalCarrot Right. It’s just odd that it selectively remembers.

Zeiss IkonStar Trek has been making up fictitious materials since season 1 -- dilithium, for instance, which (in an Animated Series episode, was said to have a helical structure similar to DNA). @Jenayah I know that all our users only get works legally. ;)
I do not know of a list of public domain works. But I am sure that many of our regular users have already read works by these and other black SF authors, or are subscribed to services where they can watch shows that focus on black characters.
And many of our users buy things that they are interested in reading or watching, and buying works by or about non-white characters also gets them more exposure.
I think there is an untapped well of questions about works by or relating to black people, and people of color more generally that our users already have. They just need some encouragement, a la Futurama.
Plus, make an event, put it on the sidebar, and new users will be drawn to the site to ask questions about books that they have read.
With respect to libraries, many in the US are reopening. Not that I recommend going.
In Britain too, some are reopening with reserve and collect.
And in Paris, as you may know, some are reopening starting the 16th.

Q: Why didn't Rios tell Picard he had been to the Vayt System on the ibn Majid?

ArabellaWhen Rios talked to Rafi about what happened on the ibn Majid in Picard season 1, he said they had traveled way out to the Vayt system. Did he not realize what that meant when they agreed to take Soji home? What would they have done without the Borg portals?

Q: Help finding a short fable about a journey, three wishes, and the wishes being spent on the guardians of the journey itself?

Austin BallardIn a sixth grade literature textbook (c. 2001), I red a short story or fable (I'm thinking Chinese in origin) about a poor man who goes on a journey to a place that'll give him three wishes so that he can be wealthy. On the way there, he is stopped by three guardians of some kind, who attempt to...

A: Ways to improve and promote Science Fiction and Fantasy

TheLethalCarrotChallenges Topic Challenges run on some various sites across the network, for example on Literature, and are a good way to bring in traffic, certainly to low traffic tags. They are featured in the side bar in an "Upcoming Events" section and help promote certain things. Something I've seen arou...

This suggests that there is a desire on the site for something like this.
So, then, why not make our first challenge something that would increase the representation of an underrepresented class of interesting works on the site?

@Jenayah I do not see why a work needs to be freely available to be the subject of a challenge.

uh? That's not what I meant

@Jenayah I must have misunderstood you.

by "publicicze them" I meant publicize Black authors

@Jenayah OK. I still think I am misunderstanding what you mean, but is pointing people to Goodreads or Amazon, or just mentioning the name of the work, not going to work?
I think I understand what you mean now.
I was not serious about pointing people to illegal channels for acquiring works, clearly. I was thinking more pointing to Wikipedia or Goodreads for people who would like to know more, or Amazon et cetera for people who would be interested in buying.

7:32 PM
Any kind of legal site would work, I'm just saying that you'd probably have more people actually becoming involved if you say "as a starting point, you could try XYZ's short stories, they're available in th epublic domain on site.com" rather than "author ABC is so freaking great, locate and read this book (i.e. do the work yourself)"
kind of like you can't get some kids to read if you don't place the book in their hands, and open it to the first chapter.
A bit sad, sure, but whatever works?

@Jenayah That would be ideal. The problem is that most recent authors are not in the public domain, and since reductions in the degree of exclusion of authors of color have largely been relatively recent, that applies double to this case, I think.
I doubt a contest or event focused on the public domain could work, except for a subset of pretty old science fiction authors.

It doesn't mean excluding Amazon/Goodreads/other entirely, just making them less prominent - the folks likely to read them are likely to be OK withh doing further digging by themselves to begin with
@Adamant true
@Adamant I'm still not talking about a contest on public domain

@Jenayah Well, if there are some authors who have made their works available in the public domain, that would be wonderful. I mean, I know Thaddeus has a few, even.
@Jenayah Sure. If there is some way of doing that effectively, why not. I do feel like the questions that people are most likely to be able to ask will be about works listed on Amazon, Goodreads, Netflix, whatever.

also true

@Jenayah I think there are people with far more experience in holding contests or Meta events than I, so I do not pretend to know the best format.
Ideally one of them could do it. I am just bringing up the idea.

7:41 PM
no experience in those either

@Jenayah You never managed a movie night?

yup. It is a good idea
@Adamant I wasn't event there when SFF still had movie nights

Anyway, I think that if this idea is to work, we'll need a good number of regulars on board. New users are unlikely to produce questions about works by black authors or about black characters until they see them.
I am sure that there are a lot of questions that people have about such works that could be asked to get the ball rolling.
I am not sure if a contest is even the best format, but that seems to have been a motivator in the past.
Obviously, we would need a moderator to pin it to the sidebar on main.
What would @Null think?

8:06 PM
A meta post to (1) encourage users to ask questions about works of black creators and (2) ask for suggestions on how to encourage the same (e.g. movie night, contest, etc.) sounds like a good idea.

I could write a draft of a meta post and you could run it by the other moderators. Or someone else could write it. One way or another.

LlavesProbably appeared in Analog, Galaxy or Fantasy and Science Fiction between 1964 and 1968.
