Q: Short story about astronomers accidentally ending the universe

CaptainKolothI read a short story I believe vaguely around 2003 in a print magazine. A group of astronomers sends a laser to bounce off a planet circling Alpha Centauri or some similarly close star. But it turns out the universe is a simulation, the planet is outside the bounds of the simulation, and the lase...

Except for being such an awful adaptation that it can only have been realised by a bot fed on random comic panels and various Internet clichés (geez, that's not even really SFF anymore), Kick-Ass 2 doesn't really feel SFFnal to me. Should we close scifi.stackexchange.com/q/142266/98028?

@Jenayah I don't know anything about it, but a side question that I've been wondering for some time: When people use the term "SFFnal" how does the "nal" part fit in with the full words that the "SFF" part is abbreviating?

@Alex one considers "SFF3 as a brand new word, forgets about the subwords it covers, and append the handy suffix to it ;P

@Jenayah Hm, it just seems a bit odd that the suffix of choice is "nal", because I can't think of any other word that has such a suffix.

@Alex optional

@Jenayah There the suffix is "al" because the "n" is already part of the word "option". Indeed, I would more easily understand "SFFal".

Q: Short story about a sociopath funeral director on a planet where goo makes birds sick

LampreyI read this online, on a site for SFF short stories, at some point between mid-2016 and May 2017. I am confident it was published within the last 3-5 years or so. I don't know how many words it was. It seemed like a quick read, but obviously a lot happens in it. It seems like it should be easy ...

Q: What is bad about a witch being born in May?

vap78One of the Wizard superstitions that Ron mentions when discussing the Tale of the Three Brothers is that: May-born witches will marry Muggles. I'm a bit speculating here but the whole culture of the Wizards is anti-muggle or at least promotes minimal contact with muggles. This means that being...

Q: Is Forbidden Forest surrounded by a wall?

Shana TarThere are lots of occasions in the books when Hogwarts grounds are hard or impossible to enter. How did this pass VLQ review? What's "invalidated"? scifi.stackexchange.com/a/126051/98028

If the post is either deleted, edited or if Q closed
I think
Though they don't seem to apply here
Worst of all is that the FP review marked it as NAN
Maybe the flag was retracted or a mod handled it
Think a mod handled it actually after looking again

9:33 AM
Still VLQ

Yup
No point wasting a VTD on it at the moment though

Why?

Cos it won't go back into the LQP queue per my understanding so unless I can get others to look at it my vote will be pointless
Let me see what I can do ;P

Q: Has George R. R. Martin described the color of Daenerys' pubic hair in any book?

GinasiusI'm curious about George R. R. Martin attitude for different female characters' sexuality. IIRC Cersei's pubis was referenced (a lot of times, may be unnecessarily IMO) as blonde, but I don't remember any reference to Daenerys' pubis. Has George R. R. Martin described the color of Daenerys' pub...

How is this
Why it's still even there O.o

10:22 AM
Cos no one cared to fix it probably
Sorted anyway

16 upvote wow people really love pubic hairs

IIRC that one had a meta about it so probs why

That one was ... controversial.

@Randal'Thor Yeah I remember little of it but stayed out of it due to other imp stuff back then. Otherwise my opinion was burn it

It won't be deleted with the UVs it has and it does sort of contain an answer, when you look at the last comment on it too. Might be worth an edit

Wouldn't that deviate from answerer's intention?

Maybe but the comment is already there so you'd only be adding the information in to a more permanent place and plus it's an unregistered user last seen ~6 years ago... they won't be able to edit it themselves now
Or at least I highly doubt they still have the session open
Nice, got all 6 reviewer badges now

@TheLethalCarrot I would've left the line explaining the question in, since there was a considerable amount of discussion about the reason for the question.
The tag was misplaced, though. I agree with removing it.

@TheLethalCarrot true

11:42 AM
That line doesn't make much sense in regards to the question or the thought process behind it to be honest. The line about Cersei and then translating that to ask about Dany is much clearer

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot yeah, perhaps we should edit that in.

Edit what in?

@Jenayah Would sci-fi change much if we verified the existence of aliens?

@SethTaddiken eh, depends on the aliens I guess

@Jenayah You're in Europe ya?

Why?

Ah, thought so, it's almost 5am here

@SQB Didn't see the comment but that's basically a re-written form of the question as it was anyway. Oh well not like anyone will see this anymore

Kevin HowellOften Galactus fed on planets with lifeforms, but the lifeforms could leave and he would still feed. Also not every planet he eats needs to have life. So what is he looking for in a planet?

Seem like duplicates to me, but in which direction?

@SQB they look like identical questions, meaning they can be merged — transferring the answers of one to the other.
Hmm, looks like the same person answered both of them as well actually

The one that's more elaborately written and older? If anything, they should probably be merged altogether anyway, so it's largely a moot consideration.
Just don't let AncientSwordRage do the closing, to prevent a meta outcry. ;-)

Does it need merging? A dupe closure seems fine too

SQB

@TheLethalCarrot yeah the merge seems less appropriate given the only person who answered the 2nd question also answered the 1st question

BroklyniteIn Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers series, Peter, the main character, has a father (Lord Grant) who was repeatedly almost famous. Blacl Mirror

I'm guessing they want deleting, might be easier to just ping/flag a mod to delete both of them though

If they're "unwanted", is there anything that ought to be done with them?

I thought mods didn't have a magic delete tag button?

SQB
@AncientSwordRage up to you, I'd say. I'm just as happy to just see it merged.

Depends if you want 2 answers by the same user on the question
Which I assume, I didn't read them all the way through, essentially say the same thing

@TheLethalCarrot I thought homepage was 15 questions?
@Donald.McLean greetings, Hubble guy!

50 but tis a setting no?
Also scifi.stackexchange.com/q/197295/98028 should be deleted... I reckon

Well I mean the default homepage
Which I don't think is a setting

Default homepage is 15? When logged out?

Oh when logged out? Dunno haha
Aye looks like 15, though when logged out you get a nice Browse More Questions button at the bottom

3:58 PM
@Jenayah poof

4:09 PM
@AnkitSharma I don't think people loved the question. Most People probably just upvoted it for sake of the principle (That it wasn't off-topic technically and the phrasing wasn't offensive). And no I am not one of the upvoters (Although apparently it has gone up to 17 since you posted it).

ufff

@TheLethalCarrot Yup There was

Cheers, couldn't be bothered to find it :P

@TheLethalCarrot When logged in it doesn't seem to be entirely consistent. Most sites I checked showed 48 questions, but a few had different amounts such as 44, 37, 31 etc. When logged out every site I checked showed 14 questions.

14 not 15 weird, and I think it depends on traffic levels
Some of the lower traffic sites show less
Though for us it should be in the 45 - 60 range
I've never counted to find out though

4:15 PM
This site was actually the one that showed 44, which was less than the lower traffic ones that showed 48.

Well I don't know then, I've never checked and I rarely visit other sites nowadays
Was just going off of gut feeling :P

@Alex I see only one reopen vote cast in the timeline scifi.stackexchange.com/posts/90228/timeline
It might have been automatically pushed to reopen queue if it was edited after closure

@Jenayah That's your vote.

oh hey indeed

But the timeline is only showing what happened from review. But the reason it was sent to review in the first place is that I voted to reopen it.
So there should be two reopen votes.

10:03 PM
maybe your vote expired?

@Jenayah It was the same day as yours.

eh... maybe votes from review don't expire?

@Jenayah Interesting theory. Tremendous ramifications if true.

I'm throwing that at random though
