Is there a way to see our Candidate score before we would potential post a nomination or no?

2:09 AM
:37265628
I suppose you could post your nomination and then immediately withdraw it...
(although I'm not sure if there are rules about re-nominating, which might mess you up...)

2:57 AM
Sorry, I couldn't resist...

2 hours later…
4:52 AM
^ That's a SEDE query for candidate score

1 hour later…
6:13 AM
'moderator positions available

2'
WAIT WHAT?! We are getting 4 mods?!

A J
Apparently.

nice!
Shows the site is growing
And ooh. My candidate score I think is 17/20 on rep, 5/8 for moderation, 5/6 for edits, and 5/6 for participation.
Thats 32/40. Happy with that (Not that it means anything this year but hey)

nice. making me look bad haha.

And @boboquack that query doesn't work properly
@stackreader well at the moment you are by far the better of two nominees for a 2 person seat, so winning the race at the moment :P
and haykam's might be removed for being a troll, not sure

@BeastlyGerbil Yup!

A J
6:26 AM
@BeastlyGerbil I don't see any need of 4 mods. Three should be sufficient.
We have three currently.
And it's still good.

Did anyone nominate yet?

Stack Reader and Haykam have.

...That's Peanut?

Yes.

@BeastlyGerbil doesn't it? It works fine for me

6:37 AM
I'm pretty sure that if less than three people nominate, the election will be canceled...

Nominations only just opened.

A J
There are six more days to go.

...*Six* more days?

A J
@Deusovi But there is a possibility that we might skip primary phase.

I know :)

A J
6:40 AM
@Deusovi Half of the day has been gone.

Yes, that's possible. (Even likely, considering that we had 11 candidates last time, and two of them were elected!) I don't understand why you mention it.

Because it's an interesting bit of trivia.

A J
@Deusovi ^^

6:51 AM
So @AJ, what brings you here? You don't seem to have an account on Puzzling.

@boboquack I just get 1 in all the badge counts

A J
@Deusovi Oh. I do have an account and I was active when this site graduated.
I voted in the last election and will do this time as well.
My Network Profile is hidden by the way.

Oh, alright!

A J
I haven't been that active lately. But I am on other sites.

Q: A few words about moderation

MariusBecause the elections have started for a new set of moderators, I think it would be a good idea to have a few words from the current moderators about what moderation means for puzzling SE. Here are a few points that you can cover. average time per day spent on the website strictly for moderat...

It's also a bit outdated - dealing with "problem users" is now much more common.

7:30 AM

8:04 AM
^my global flag stats

1 hour later…
9:32 AM
...I threw my hat in.

9:47 AM
this user : puzzling.stackexchange.com/users/32543/calvt is going around changing all the http image to https from imgur.... I accepted the first one but this is piling up.... I'm not a mod.... yet ;P. Shoudn't someone do something about this?

@stackreader Fixed
(See Charcoal HQ)
(Fixed by Mith)

ok thanks.

2 hours later…
11:34 AM
Hello, @quarkle.

12:13 PM
Sooo that query from Bobo didn't work, I still don't know how to see potential candidate score. And @Mithrandir how do you see flags?

@n_palum Why didn't it work?

Dunno... I put in my username and hit run and nothing happened

@n_palum two ways: There's a dashboard, where we can see all flags, and if we go to a question that has a flag, there's a mini-dashboard that shows at the bottom.
@n_palum worked for me; your score is 5.

Do you need to put like an @ in their or something
A whole 5 woo

@n_palum no. The user ID, not the name.
The number that you have when you go to puzzling.stackexchange.com/users/current

12:18 PM
Ahhh
Erhmm.. still not working

What exactly are you putting in?

34679

Did you put the Captcha in?

Didn't ask for one

...screenshot?

12:22 PM

...look at where you're putting that number in. Look at the label.

Ugh that's so confusing
When the spot I entered in is empty it says search by url or username

Not username, sitename :P

Where's the vote page?

We're not up to voting yet.
That starts in... 6 days.

12:29 PM
I'm just waiting patiently till voting starts... wow that's a lot of patience needed.

I'm voting for you Mithrandir, although "Stack Reader" is not bad either

@jmb.mage thanks :)

Question also about the question/nomination period - should we upvote ones we like and downvote ones we don't or just leave be the ones we don't

Got confused, thought we were talking about the questionnaire :P
@n_palum downvote

We are talking about the questionnaire?

12:36 PM
@Mithrandir I think you'd be an excellent mod :)

@n_palum 🙈
@n_palum so keep them the same score
@EriktheOutgolfer thanks :)

Why do they need to be the same score?
They're at like +4, +2, and +1 right now
And nothing against you Mith, while I feel you'd do a great job modding, I think the opportunity should be given to someone not already moderating a site as to allow them to focus on one site. Just my opinion though.

So that none of them are shown higher than the others - so it'll be random. That's what people try to do on other sites, anyway - it makes sure that people don't just pile on.

Theoretically though, what if I didn't like a questionnaire response?

We can't force how you vote
@n_palum no problem - just don't tell that to Rory Alsop :P

12:42 PM
@n_palum It's up to you. Treat them the same way you treat any answer/question on SE :) Easy ;)

:O

And GaMen!
GamEn for me :)

Mornin'
Are you running Techi? Or just running to go get that dog?

gAmen

Haha.. Well, I would like to be a part. But, for now, I will wait. If I feel there are not enough candidates, I will jump in. But, I am very happy being just a user :)
But, I am looking forward to see a mod in my timezone..

12:46 PM
Well, if you'd like to be a mod, jump right in, don't hold yourself back.

What's your timezone? @Tech

@Ankoganit What about you? You would be a good candidate

But you'd need to prove that you would be a good mod, and answer the questionnaire.

IST @Anko

Same here
@Techidiot Heh, I'm not super active (thanks though)

12:47 PM
Wow two people in India? Well, I guess you can both nominate yourselves!

Haha

From my experience, Techidiot is more likely to win.

@EriktheOutgolfer Thanks. But that totally depends on how convincing I am as a member of the community and off-course my answers :) All the current candidates are good and have a good chance to win.

I was based solely on the fact that from my experience that you're more active than Anko.

2 hours later…
3:14 PM
At the moment I think that Mith and Hackers will win, unless Rubio or Gareth opt in

I still think Rubio will be opting in
I'm still on the fence, and not sure I'd beat either of those two.

If Gareth doesn't opt in, then you should definitely go for it
Although personally I will probably put people with 10k+ rep first, as they have experience of mod tools

Is that 10k here or anywhere?

@n_palum If everyone had the attitude of "I won't bother, because I don't think I'll win," we wouldn't have very many nominations. Make your decision based on whether you would like to be a moderator and think you would do a good job; not on anybody else.
4
A reminder to everyone: the nomination phase is not a voting phase. Let's try to keep the votes even on all nominations. When it comes to voting, you can pick your candidate(s).

@GentlePurpleRain that may be worth pinning.

3:22 PM
I'll think about it. Of course I'd love to, and I think I could spend the time to do it, but I don't know.
@GentlePurpleRain So we aren't supposed to be voting on nomination questions?

@GentlePurpleRain Let's just say that those votes don't count. Problem solved ;)

@Mithrandir You have the "power of pin". Go ahead, if you think it's a good idea.
@n_palum We voted on the questions earlier. We are not voting on the nomination responses. Once the nomination phase is closed, then we get a chance to actually vote on the candidates.

Hmm okay. So I guess comments are the appropriate way to discuss things with nominees.

@EriktheOutgolfer But the responses get sorted (by default) in order of votes. So those with more votes are more likely to have their responses read. One could argue that that could influence the election.

Also I'm glad my one question was a tough one for people to answer :P

3:25 PM
@n_palum Or chatting in here - that's one of the purposes of this room

@n_palum If it's easy to answer, there's not much point in asking it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@GentlePurpleRain Then add an emphasized note to sort by active. I think that's the most elegant sorting.

@GentlePurpleRain Are we supposed to ask questions to candidates during the election phase or during the nomination phase or anytime?

@Techidiot I suppose anytime, although the nomination phase would probably be the best time.

3:41 PM
It seemed asking questions on their nomination post is encouraged

Okay. Thanks
Okay. @Mithrandir Are you sure you will be able to handle the duties of both sites at the same time?
Also, @GentlePurpleRain I don't see the other two in TSL much..Is that a factor to be considered while considering the candidates? A lot of things happen in rooms I think.
I can't even ping Brent here..

@Techidiot yes - Literature isn't very much work (for now, at least) and I'm pretty much hopping between Lit, SFF, Puzzling, Meta, Area 51 and chat the whole time I'm on SE. Chat takes the most time ;).
@Techidiot you can leave a comment asking them to come here to answer questions.

@Mithrandir Okay. But what if Literature grows big in coming few months? What will you do then?
Sure. Let me leave a comment.

@Techidiot unless it jumps to SO size, I'm sure that it won't become an issue. (then again, there is the guy with 4 diamonds, one on SO (and another with 7 diamonds))

Hmm.. And that may require a lot of time and responsibility handling. I hope you are confident enough that you will be able to handle it.

3:49 PM
@Techidiot Personally, I don't think that's much of a concern. I think a candidate should at least occasionally be involved in chat, but people tend to ping a mod if they need one, and I don't think it usually takes too long for someone to respond.
@Mithrandir Those guys must be full-time moderators (i.e. no day job).

I think it matters a little bit, or at least if they used to be more active. A lot of communication and community building is done in the chat rooms.

@GentlePurpleRain so it's good that I homeschool :)

It's true the the mods probably seem more accessible and more approachable if they're more active in chat.
@Mithrandir That's still a day job, of sorts.

That's true. I am mod on a small technical forum. It hardly gets any flag posts. But, needs an eye now and then.

1 hour later…
4:58 PM
Now, tonight happens to be like the one night that I'm actually doing something, so I'll be AFK for a couple hours.

Sid
5:50 PM
@tech I don't think the timezone really matters. Everyone seems to be around at approximately the same time..
@n_palum I would say GPR is spot on, there. If you feel you can handle the mod duties and have enough time to spare for the site, I say, go for it!

I think timezone matters, chat is usually almost completely dead by the time I go to bed; yesterday it was a little more active because Rubio went to sleep at 5, but there's certainly a dead zone there

6:05 PM
It's not necessarily the responsibilities of a mod to be active in chat.

6:37 PM
3 hours ago, by n_palum
I think it matters a little bit, or at least if they used to be more active. A lot of communication and community building is done in the chat rooms.
There, now it looks like you're arguing against yourself :P

Oh goodness what have I done
I mean it's not their responsibility all the time, you can't expect the chats to be active 24/7

I was merely using chat as a measure of user activity, because both of our mods tend to be active when they're online

Usually

Sid
It is actually nice for a change that this election has no politics in it. :P

Every election is about politics in a way or another

6:42 PM
How would it have politics

Sid
@n_palum The election here?

politics is the study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community as well as the interrelationship(s) between communities
Isn't distributing power in our community exactly what we're doing?

Sid
@ffao that is the official definition of politics.
Clearly, it doesn't work that way..

@Sid Personally I think time zone matters. We get some good number of puzzles during IST. And some good number of activities as well
Like a user went on editing posts..but there was no mod to take care of that(although not sure if it was an emergency) But things do happen

That is the only definition of politics that I know, maybe it's a cultural difference that you take it to mean something else

6:47 PM
I don't disagree that time zones are important, I just don't think it should be a deciding factor.

Off course not. Just a relevant thing. Similar to being active in chats

Sid
@ffao No, you are correct. The thing is politics has been demonised in such a way here it is assumed to be muck where everyone is just running behind power.
What actually is the most relevant thing in deciding mods?

Level-headed meta participation is one of the main things I look for

I was going to say level-headedness as well

with some consideration to use of moderation tools and comments left on the main site

7:24 PM
So Marius is running again, and Glorfindel through his name into the hat.

Sid
Right, now that both @Glorfindel and @Marius are here, I may take the liberty to ask both of you this question.
40 mins ago, by Sid
What actually is the most relevant thing in deciding mods?

@Sid Not having an itchy "delete/close/destroy" trigger finger.

I think most of the candidates (as far as I know them) can carry the responsibility of a diamond. What matters is how they explain their actions (if not blatantly obvious).

Not having a trigger finger is an important factor in deciding who should be a mod?

Sid
@n_p Yes. That is a very important factor, actually. We had a bit of trouble with that last year.

7:37 PM
@n_palum given this, yes.

Sid
And Marius was one of the few guys who were opposing the sandbox. :P

Was just making sure I understood the wording of the response

@Sid I knew this will bite me on the a** sometime :)

I don't think that is a bad thing you opposed it, it did fail no?

@Marius Actually, I'm not seeing much sign of you participating in that meta discussion?

7:40 PM
@Sconibulus I cannot contradict you there.

Sid
@Glorf Also, I don't understand what you mean by "explain their actions". Could you clarify?

I think they mean how they answer the questionnaire

I think he means providing justifications for moderator-actions they take, especially things like unilateral closes

@Sconibulus spot on.

Mmmm

8:05 PM
@BrentHackers I thought I'd ping you in case you weren't aware of this chat room. All the other nominees have already checked it out.

8:43 PM
I think that if @Glorfindel or I are elected, then there might be an uptick in the amount of questions :P

It would be funny if we had 2 Tolkien characters as mods...

9:02 PM
if that is what a guy needs to do to be moderator....you can call me Bofur from now on.

Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Óin, Glòin, Felli, Kelli, Thorin Oakenshield, (now it's bugging me that I can't remember)
Dwalin, Balin
Ori, Dori, Nori.

3 hours later…
11:59 PM
@GentlePurpleRain Was that a superping?
