@tybocopperkettle Keep in mind that, in the early days of Jelly, there was basically no such things as link combinators (e.g. $). So the only way to group links together was by using chains

also reminds me, it's kinda strange we never got any combinators that go beyond existing chain rules
like something to combine two dyads and evaluate them left to right, or something to combine a dyad and a monad and apply the monad to the right argument
(or more like both of those in one quick lmao)
