How does 1_ð+_µN return -1 when 1_ð+_ returns -7? Wouldn't you expect 7?

the overall chain is a monadic (1),(2,1)
you can usually use µ to "refocus" but what it really does is start a new monadic chain in the overall chain

I'm still confused, what's being passed into the last chain in 1_ð+_µN?

1_$+_¥N is essentially equivalent
@tybocopperkettle the left argument to the whole line = the single argument to the program
the last chain on the line isn't actually the last to be evaluated, because then the middle one gets its value as the right argument

I'm lost...

the chain rules apply again with the chains as the links
if it makes things any clearer 1_ð+_ðN gives the desired 7 given 3
because then it's a monadic (1),(2),(2)

Okay I think I might slightly get it?
What's the point though?

i've been used to it long enough that i've sort of stopped thinking about places strict left to right would be shorter but it's definitely useful pretty often

for dyadic meta-chains one useful idiom is starting a chain of only monads with ɓ; even if there are only two-four it's strictly shorter than using a grouping quick because then you'd still need } or @ afterwards
