@cairdcoinheringaahing Which 2 byters can be golfed to 1 byter?

That depends on the 2 byters

which?

Generally tho, you can remove ¹ from most 2 bytes, along with

what is "¹"?

"identity": return the argument

2:18 AM
ok, regex in Jelly?

Nope
Jelly doesn't have regex

sorry
@cairdcoinheringaahing parentheses in jelly?

Do you mean for grouping commands together?

@cairdcoinheringaahing maybe

In which case, you'll want to use one of $ƊƲ¥ɗʋ depending on the number f commands and arity of the grouped thing

2:28 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Try it online!

”!; prepends a ! to get !abc. +”! then concatenates ! after each character to give !!a!b!c!

That's because of the undefined behaviour of using + with strings
Are you trying to put a ! between each character?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I want abc be !a!b!c!
@cairdcoinheringaahing I know

I'd suggest using the j join command

2:34 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing what is this?

j joins the left argument by the right argument, aka, insert the right argument between each element of the left

@cairdcoinheringaahing Try it online!
Is there a way to golf this?

I can get 7 bytes
Think about how you could remove the by rearranging parts of the program

2:45 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I can't think
@cairdcoinheringaahing Try it online!

3:44 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing i have 5
md5 3c40729739f5be4a3003c329f4ba22e1
or ca6a19728c446fba2f13a271ef7f4a98

@UnrelatedString I think I may also have 5, but haven't tested it yet

Wait, no, it's actually 6, but I have a cursed 5 byter

how cursed

f721d7b7ce78cec549442b3c3f39722c md5
@UnrelatedString Like, at least 60% cursed

3:52 AM
nice

Spoiler cause I need to go sleep

ooh
never actually thought of using that quick with a nilad

@cairdcoinheringaahing to add on to this, when you're actively working on the thing you're grouping you can also put it on a separate line and use Çç so you don't have to constantly update what you're grouping it with, then inline it with the appropriate $ƊƲ¥ɗʋ once it works

@cairdcoinheringaahing I have a question, What is link?

Jan 13 at 16:51, by caird coinheringaahing
"link" refers to two different things in Jelly: each line (separated by newlines) is a link, and each chain in each link (line) is made up of links made up of atoms and quicks

Chain?

Jan 12 at 17:36, by caird coinheringaahing
@Fmbalbuena Basically, a line in a Jelly program is made up of chains. If you don't have any of the chain separators (øµ)ðɓ), then the line is a single chain and you don't need to worry about them. But, if you do have the separators, then the chains change the way the line is parsed

A example is "5m5" has 2 chains?

9:39 PM
No. 5m5 is a single chain, as it doesn't have any of the chain separators: øµ)ðɓ

i thought chain encompassed the smaller scale tacit patterns as well

Sort of. The exact terminology is weird

in which case 5m5 is a single link, containing a single chain, composed of two chains of three links

Any reason why this place is still a gallery?

a what
you mean private
tradition :P

@petStorm That's the way Erik first set it up. I don't know the reasoning, but I guess it had its purpose (maybe prevent spam from other users which weren't here to learn Jelly). That doesn't really apply nowadays, because ppcg is inactive in general but I think we'll keep it this way
Each link is parsed according to the arities of the chains that make up that link. Each chain is made up links, which are parsed according to the arities of the links

it probably also ties in to the way that students' progress would also be tracked on the website and such
so the step of requesting access to the room would also get you registered on there

We have also had people request access who, when we asked, didn't actually want to learn Jelly

Makes you go "...what? why?", but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@cairdcoinheringaahing Let me take this moment to be annoyed at Dennis for the naming conventions with "link" and "link" :/

the top level sense of link doesn't even make sense in the chain metaphor because links-in-the-sense-of-lines don't chain unless you invoke them with quicks which function at the level of small-links

9:48 PM
But also, "links (lines)" are made up of chains. What "thing" is made up of chains, in the same way that chains are made up of links?

...that's a very good question

By imperial measurements, chains make up a furlong
2
100 links in 1 chain, 10 chains in 1 furlong

we should actually adopt that as terminology

"Main furlong. Takes L on the left and n on the right"

especially large full programs are now to be referred to as statute miles
