I actually gave that arXiv link already above. There are multipede constructions and hypergraphs in that paper, but no mention of any construction related to the CFI gadget. Which is sort of strange, as the paper about the exponential lower bound for individ... talked about it as if the construction was invented there. Maybe I need to read that paper in more detail to see the connection.

One connection that I do see is that the multipede construction as defined in [arXiv:1705.03283] is basically the normal CFI construction applied to an undirected multi-edge hypergraph. They just represent that hypergraph as a bipartite graph, so they don't need to talk about hypergraphs at all. That was actually the point were I got curious about the original construction in [arXiv:9411236], i.e. whether they connect it to hypergraphs.
