11:00 PM
Tiberias was "Sea of Galilee" and Gareth was pretty sure about it

Hint level 3: the clue that worried me was one of Mike's
(tell me if I should stop the drip-feeding...)

Then Teotihuacan was "Quetzalcoatl worship city" but Gareth didn't know how to spell it, so he couldn't have suspected that was the clue

or it could be something related to native americans that he does know how to spell

Must be its twin city Tetrotihuacan.

just to see if it's the word:
2: rule of four

11:03 PM
sorry, was AFK for a minute
@Volatility your 2 isn't TETRATION again (rule in the sense of arithmetic-y operation)?

then pass 2

no-one's contacted

tetrarchy?

Yes! I'm Just in thyime

11:06 PM
Gareth defending: T E T R A R C H

What happened?

ahahaha

> Always four there are; no more, no less. A master, an apprentice, a defender, and a solver.

I don't get how any of the early clues was related to that

"Spot here, contained terribly sneakily, (A) thematically hiding (N) molecule"

11:06 PM
Which clue was the close to it?

The related clue I was hinting at was Mike's first (second clue in the game) at Tiberias; the most famous tetrarch, at least for me, would be Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee.

Was workin' on a steg clue (for another not-sure-if-word)

Oh. Well, 38 was simply TETRA, which is a type of fish.

@GarethMcCaughan Hang on, that means the game's over?

oh, of course!
@Randal'Thor yes, the game is now over

11:08 PM
Because it looks like you just gave us 4 extra letters suddenly.

and @Volatility can defend next if he so chooses and if there are enough people still wanting to attack

Confusing formatting :-)

@Randal'Thor that's because Volatility's clue was near enough to being a direct hit

is a group of fish called a school?

(tetrarchy / tetrarch)
@ffao yes

11:08 PM
I think the standard is to say Gareth was defending:

@ffao Yes. Also, what was 1?

yeah do we want to start another round?

it's so bad I didn't want to give it up

go on @ffao, admit it

but it was for tetraplegic

11:09 PM
ah
I don't pronounce it that way...

so it's bad in more than one way

Oh no, I think only in one way :-)

(apparently the word I had in mind earlier was quadRAcycle, not quadcycle)

I don't understand it at all

tetra + pledge
punny clue
anyway, I'm AFK for about 10 minutes now, then intermittent for a while, then hopefully asleep for several hours :-)

11:12 PM
alright in the absence of anyone else leaving, i'll start

I'm still here.

Volatility defending: R

I am intermittent now as a meeting just started

1. ban him! ban the witch!

I'll be at work soon, but for a few more min

11:13 PM

3: Lift up? No, tear down!

11:14 PM
5. 5 letter palindrome

why don't i know my palindromes :/

7: 7 letter palindrome

5 not RADAR
7 not RACE CAR

@Volatility Valid, but not the one I was thinking of.

--

11:15 PM
7: yes

uncontact 5

5 not ROTOR?

@Volatility +1

3 not RAZE

3 +1

11:16 PM
11. Nemesis

@MikeQ contact?
7. Used against boggarts

12. Both Rick and Morty
contact 7

what's a boggart?

(does that make 7 an unfair/invalid clue?)

No i don't think so

11:19 PM
People not knowing things is kind of essential to the game. :)

Where the deuce is @deus when you need him?
@Alconja True, but there's not knowing things and not knowing things :-)

Kind of a fine line between fair not knowing and unfair not knowing though :P

anyway i'll pass on 1, i think someone contacted it

1 is RUBIO

11:21 PM
...oh, the reference sounds vaguely familiar
Volatility defending: R E

so luckily 7 dies and we won't have to worry about it anymore :)

Yep, 7 was of course RIDDIKULUS (from Harry Potter).

11 dies (RIVAL), 12 dies (ROILAND), 2 dies (RON BURGUNDY)
and I think 9 was guessed already

@MikeQ Good, my contact on 11 would've been right :-)
@MikeQ I know someone who has a cat called Ron Burgundy.

9 wasn't guessed, at least not on my screen

11:24 PM
Uncontact 9 then

i didn't guess 9

9 was ROTAVATOR, it goes (don't ask me what it means)
Also I go too, have fun :P

Actually @Rand that also helps whoever posts the clue

mutters

10. Ctrl+Y

11:32 PM
@MikeQ How? You can follow the arrow to see exactly what I replied to.
@MikeQ contact 10

contact 10 @MikeQ

10 not REDO

10 correct

@Randal'Thor That requires you to actually follow the arrow, for each individual contact
whereas with the number all you have to do is look, and the information is right there

Hovering isn't that hard :-)

11:33 PM
with arrow-following, after you've followed one arrow and moved onto the next, the first is no longer visible
so it's one more demand on your working memory, which in this game is often one too many

9 wild guess, not RED again?

at least if you're as stupid as I am

9 is RED [correct]
11. Water closet

Wow, that was a quick unstar.

yeah, I was quite pleased with it :-)

11:34 PM
7: two pies

contact 7 @Randal'Thor maybe

12. Unattractive

contact 15

4. Mahler's second symphony

@GarethMcCaughan contact 4
@GarethMcCaughan I should know this, but I've never been much into politics until quite recently ...

ah well, one out of two ain't bad

2 guess, not REPUBLICAN?

2 is not REPUBLICAN

11:38 PM
Actually, uncontact 4; I was getting mixed up with something else.

aww. There I was thinking "at last, some culture in this place" :-)

16. Megabyte and Hexadecimal are bad

Could somebody star 15?

Thanks

11:40 PM
what's contacted? I have 15 and 7 but I think nothing else

oh 1, not REPREHENSIBLE

@Wen1now It's easy to miss that that's an actual clue.

yup, 1 was REPREHENSIBLE
1. Ctrl-Z

contact 1

1 not REWIND?

11:42 PM
1 is not REWIND

uncontact 1

17. Attention-getting whistle-blower

contact 17 @MikeQ
we have rather a lot of clues, maybe focus on contacting/guessing/passing for a bit

Maybe focus on hurrying @Vol along a bit :-P

hey

11:43 PM
it looks like no one here knows 2, which is the sort of thing one either knows or doesn't, so I'll withdraw it
likewise for 4

i'll pass on 7, i think @Gareth contacted that?

I did. I thought it might be REVOLUTION.
(2pi)

(radians)

+1
I hoped Gareth would get that one.

11:44 PM
glad to be of service

was thinking 2pi as well, but revolution didn't come to me
Volatility defending: R E C

There was no revolution revelation

I think thinking of angles as rotations is a particularly mathematician-y thing

15 dies, was REPEAT

1 was REVERT and is therefore dead

11:45 PM
17 dies (REFEREE), 16 dies (REBOOT), 11 dies (RESTROOM)

@Wen1now How?

I don't understand 16

It's a music repeat symbol

@GarethMcCaughan TV show.

11:45 PM
3 lives.

1. "Oops, never mind that"

In music, a repeat sign is a sign that indicates a section should be repeated. If the piece has one repeat sign alone, then that means to repeat from the beginning, and then continue on (or stop, if the sign appears at the end of the piece). A corresponding sign facing the other way indicates where the repeat is to begin. These are similar to the instructions da capo and dal segno. Repeat. Wiederholungszeichen (Ger.) A sign that a movement or part of a movement is to be twice performed. That which is to be repeated is generally included within the sign of two or four dots in the spaces...When...

1 not RECALL?

1 Nope

2. May be ready, final or dead

11:48 PM
4: something old farts used to use
@GarethMcCaughan Dammit, this reminds me of one of my riddles and I can't recall which one.

If I contact 4, I insult myself, so contact 4

("old farts" isn't meant to be an insult)
(I'm an old fart at heart)

5. "Last time, on Puzzling Stack Exchange..."

@MikeQ too many fours

11:49 PM
contact 5

contact 5 @MikeQ

@Gareth there are still two fours

yes but one of them is inside the clue
oh no
sorry, you're right
three many fours

@GarethMcCaughan Oh right, it was this one. "I can be many, a millionth, or black."
Nobody's starred my 4 :-(

oh i think that gave it away

11:51 PM
there were three fours two many

6 not RECURSION or some variant thereof

7: []

yeah, 6 was RECURSION and yeah, the edit gave it away. But I could hardly refuse to change my number.

8. A wide one tries to catch

contact 8 @MikeQ

11:52 PM
7 not RECTANGLE?

@GarethMcCaughan I could have been a gentleman and changed mine instead.

9: little lunch

10. Chair with a lever on the side

Would've done, if I'd been able to contact yours :-P

7: ✔

11:53 PM
@Randal'Thor of course you could, but I couldn't ask you to without giving it away just as badly

contact 9

10 not RECLINABLE?
9 not RECESS

10 RECLINER but RECLINABLE is good enough

10. Petit connu

9: +1

11:53 PM
(note: my French may be a bit rubbish)

Is 10 a french word?

@Alconja Do you speak French, perchance?

@Wen1now no comment

I do do a bit a french

contact 4 @Randal'Thor maybe

11:54 PM
@Randal'Thor nein

I don't know what connu is though

i'll pass on 5

@Alconja In French, "little lunch" is the term for breakfast.
"sounds like little lunch with no bees" = RECFAST :-P

--

Well, TIL

11:56 PM
My guess for 5 was RECAP or RECAPITULATION

5 was indeed RECAP.

I see Mike hit the up-arrow key
I hate it when that happens

Yes, me too, especially because I'm the one doing it

oh right

@Wen1now WUT? I thought your " 7: ✔" meant the solution to the previous 7 was correct!

11:56 PM
Sorry, unstar 7

And I unstarred the previous 7 for that reason.

Volatility defending: R E C I

Yes, I'm sorry, I forgot it had been guessed

1 dies (RECANT), 8 survives

10 was RECHERCHE (acute accent on the last E) which is both a French word and an English word, albeit not a common one. "Petit connu" means little-known.

11:57 PM
4 dies (RECORD)

2 is dead; it was RECKONING

@GarethMcCaughan How?
3 dies (RECTUM)

there's ready reckoning, dead reckoning and a final reckoning
at least I think those are all standard terms
pretty sure 8 is dead

I've only heard the last of those.

--

11:58 PM
Mike said 8 is not dead

oh, then uncontact 8

No, wait, brain fart. 8 is dead. Was RECEIVER.

right, that's what I thought (though I have no idea what sport it actually is)

when Gareth knows more about your own clue than you do

Wide receiver is a position in... "Football" :)
