Q: Why is there a huge difference regarding the liberation of Parikshit in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavatam?

SuryaThe Mahabharata, one of the two Itihasas, begins with the tale of the Sarpa Satra of King Janamejaya, during which the epic was narrated to him by Janamejaya. The Sarpa Satra was a 12-year Yajna conducted by Janamejaya to avenge his father Parikshit's death by the Snake Takshaka, by killing all t...

A: Why is there a huge difference regarding the liberation of Parikshit in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavatam?

sv.Before one can answer your question, we need to step back a little and dig into the Khāṇḍava-dahana episode, which, undoubtedly is the most controversial event in the life of the Pāṇḍavas and ask ourselves the following questions. Who exactly is Takṣaka? Is "it" really a snake or is "he" a pers...

@sv. So what do you think how Parikshit died actually..? Do you believe he was bitten by snake naturally (without curse) and he died then stories were made...?...

sv.
3:04 AM
@Tezz From my answer: "A Takshaka later killed Parikshita" -- so he was killed somehow. It was a revenge killing .. could be dart whose tip was poisoned.
@Tezz I don't believe in snakebite theory -- for snakebite, a king needs to walk on foot in a jungle. Now I don't think a king will ever step foot in jungle just like that.
@Tezz From the question: "But Takshaka decides to enter one of the fruits to be taken for Parikshit. He stops a rishi named Kashyapa (not the famous Kashyapa) who had been on his way to chant the Mrta Sanjeevani on a dead Parikshit and bring him to life, thereby obtaining lot of rewards. Takshaka gives Kashyapa a lot of wealth and then enters a fruit." -- A full-size human entering into a fruit and then biting, I'm not sure if even a kid will believe this story!
It's possible that a Brahmana really tried to save Parikshit's life (after the poison dart hit him) -- but a Brahmana failing to save the life of a King does not make for a good story or plot. It's very demeaning to the Brahmanas. So Takshaka entering the fruit is probably made up to cover the fact that the Brahmana could not save the king's life.
@Tezz Also, FYI, I don't really subscribe to this convoluted "kalpa bheda" theory -- I think it matters worse instead of clearing up the confusion.
@Tezz Krishna is shown to have died due to Gandhari's curse ... Karna is shown to have died due to Parashurama's curse .. but if you dig deep the curses don't really take effect. Everyone dies naturally. How to explain that?! IMO, all these Brahmana curses are interpolations. I agree with Karve on that.

3:37 AM
@sv. Some snake entering the astra of Karna. Will you believe it or you are skeptic about it too?
@sv. Ha Ha..

@sv. "A full-size human entering into a fruit and then biting, I'm not sure if even a kid will believe this story!"... maybe a Kid doesn't believe it... but for a Yogi it is a simple task... Through Yogic Siddhi Anima one can easily achieve that... One can be infinitesimaly small upto atom through Anima...
@sv. "Also, FYI, I don't really subscribe to this convoluted "kalpa bheda" theory"... so do you mean there are not Kalpas...?..

sv.
3:56 AM
@Tezz Well if the Kalpa-bheda theory needs Kalpa-Manvantara theory to work correctly. Yes, in that case, I would have to reject the Kalpa-Manvantara concept altogether. I'm not really worried about what other repercussions it might have. I'm only interested in finding out the truth .. not blindly follow what it says in the Puranas or even the Mahabharata.
@SreeCharan Yes, Ashvasena entering Karna quiver is an interpolation too. What it really means is Karna arrow is filled with poison.
@SreeCharan So Krishna did really save Arjuna from a poison arrow shot by Karna. The poison for the arrow did really come from a snake venom (naga) -- that doesn't mean a snake was sitting in the quiver.
@Tezz So you are saying a worthless Naga acquired yogic skills to enter a fruit? But Parikshit could not save his own life with the help of 100 Brahmanas or thru various yagnas? Is there any evidence of the Naga or Takshaka doing any yoga?

@sv. You are neglecting Yogic powers. If you don't believe in Siddhis, they you shouldn't believe Veda Samhitas, which were heard in deep tapasya. Then you must question every aspect of Vedas and Hinduism.

sv.
@Tezz Where common sense cannot explain impossible stories, we need to reject it. That's the simple rule I follow. Now if you speculate saying almost everything in scriptures can be explained using Yoga or Yogic powers, then we don't really divine weapons etc.
@TheDestroyer "Then you must question every aspect of Vedas and Hinduism" - that's exactly what I'm doing :) I believe @Surya's original question is based on that.

@sv. What do you think about Sages hearing Vedas in deep tapasya? Are you skeptical of it?

sv.

A: How could octogenarian heroes fight in Mahabharata?

sv.But how can one fight a deadly war at this age with such perfection? 80-year-olds fighting fierce battles is simply not possible especially when they are nearing the end of their 100-year lives. Some of the answers to What was the age of all Pandavas during the Mahabharata war? also talk about ...

^^^ FYI, I stand by every word I wrote in that answer.

@sv. Killing the descendant of Arjuna was his aim. He must have done some serious tapas for attaining that. "Is there any evidence of the Naga or Takshaka doing any yoga?"- MB or any other scripture is not a diary of some snake. :D

sv.
4:10 AM
@SreeCharan Well if you want to believe a snake can enter an apple like fruit, change forms, walk on two legs .. etc. You're most welcome to do so .. :P I just don't buy it.
@SreeCharan Maybe we need to believe it ourselves before we pass on to our children :) Now I know why my elders told me all these stories as real :D They want me to pass on "as is" without any skepticism to future generations!

@sv. you shouldn't compare People of Dwapara Yuga to people of Kali Yuga. Even you can't compare our own ancestors with us. They are healthier than us by eating "Raagi" while we eat all kinds of Junk food with so much of polution. Then think how different it was before 5k years.

@sv. Entering might not the correcting word. But it might have poisoned the fruit.

sv.
@SreeCharan Well, re-read @Surya's question. He does say Takshaka entered the fruit, came out of it and bit Parikshit.

@sv. There's a form of Vishnu called "Pradyumna". Because of His form "Pradyumna", you have these doubts. 😀

sv.
@SreeCharan You think "entering the fruit physically" is Sanskrit poetry? :P

4:14 AM
@sv. Skepticism should be appreciated but only upto some extent. Seeing everything under skeptic glasses makes us atheists some day.

sv.
@TheDestroyer LOL .. Good one. Yeah I sound like non-believer. True. Why don't you ask @SwamiVishwananda or Swami Vivekananda of what he thinks?
Swami Vivekananda offers his opinion on this topic in his lecture The Religion We Are Born In:

In the Puranas we find many things which do not agree with the Vedas. As for instance, it is written in the Puranas that someone lived ten thousand years, another twenty thousand years, but in the Vedas we find :— "Man lives indeed a hundred years."

Which are we to accept in this case? Certainly the Vedas.
@TheDestroyer You think Vivekananda was deluded too when he wrote that?! :P
@SreeCharan Yes, I agree. But the truth will come out one day whether anyone likes it or not .. wants to believe it or not.

@sv. No. I want to know your opinion about origin of "Vedas"?
@sv. but i think Adi Shankara accepted that? He didn't reject that notion.

sv.
@TheDestroyer My current opinion is: Vedas (or Shruti) has an origin. It is called Shruti because we don't know it's origin .. passed down orally thru the ages .. not because it has no origin.
@TheDestroyer Unfortunately, Adi Shankara is wrong. See Keshav's question about how Shankara uses two peacocks mating without physical contact.

@sv. you are using present day scientific methods to verify our scriptures. This is very bad.
@sv. i suggest you to read Autobiography of yogi.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Garikipati still says peacocks mate using 'rain' etc.
@TheDestroyer I'll be very glad if one properly answers my questions instead of saying reading xyz book ..
@TheDestroyer Is the book supposed to clarify all the contradictions in MB and VR?

4:22 AM
@sv. Which question?

sv.
@SreeCharan Will look up. One sec.

@sv. Consequences of staying in US! If you don't believe in yogic powers, its very difficult to convince you.
@sv. it talks about miracles and explainn them.

Q: What scriptures say cranes can become pregnant without the involvement of males?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, by far the most popular school of Hindu philosophy is the Vedanta school, which bases its tenets on the doctrines laid out in the Brahma Sutras, a work by the sage Vyasa that summarizes and systematizes the philosophical teachings of the Upanishads. You can read the...

"It is, moreover, commonly known that the female crane conceives without a male."

@sv. Tell me you opinion about "sages hearing veda in deep tapasya"?

sv.
@TheDestroyer I'm not too sure about that.

4:25 AM
It's simple logic that something created by man won't stay for eternal and man made things never be true.
@sv. but you said Vedas have origin?

sv.
@TheDestroyer No, not the effect of US or India, Hinduism itself doesn't have a single creation theory. There are multiple.

@sv. Who said?

Q: How was the universe created?

AmitI always think what was the start. How it started? Who was the creator? Who created god? Who created the creator? Where did the solid material, to create planets, come from? Can anybody explain me the above points in detail?

@sv. not Hinduism! But interpretation.
@sv. Puranas agree with Upanishads but they give a attribute or name to Brahman.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Yes, IMO, Vedas did have human origin. Oldest, I agree, but human origin.

A: Guidelines for new users answering questions

Be HappyFew guidelines for answering questions about Hinduism: An answer is most acceptable and authentic when it is based upon Vedic scriptures and gives proper reference to the source. Some of the credible scriptures are as below: Vedas and the primary Upanishads Smrutis (Bhagavd Gita, Manu Smu...

"Like these there can be many different and contradicting answers from various texts. But even though contradicting, all statements of the scriptures are valid and correct (manu – 2.14)."
"all statements of the scriptures are valid and correct" -- I reject this notion.

4:31 AM
@sv. haha. then i will stop this discussion with you. But my suggestion is to read Autobiography of a Yogi. Don't apply physical rules for Subtle things. If these subtle things are false in reality, Hinduism would have died long ago. People won't even talk about sages.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Subtle things should remain subtle, they don't take physical form. Snake cannot become a worm, then become a snake again .. etc.
@TheDestroyer Ok, n.p. will read it and come back with more questions :P
@TheDestroyer So you really believe Rama's father Dasaratha lived for 60,000 years? And Rama ruled for 10,000 years?

@sv. why not? Once you activate Subtle body, you will bypass all physical laws. That's the reason i said you to read Autobiography of a Yogi. Yogananda explains clearly in his book. Even in book, Apprentice to Himalayan master, Adisesha comes to Lord Shiva.
@sv. I'm not sure. I couldn't understand it with Subtle things. So, no opinion.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Well, if you cannot a stand, then you probably side with what it says in MB or VR then ..

@sv. Sri M says he didn't want to include "snake" Adisesha in his book as many people wouldn't believe. But his Guru says it to include. His Guru is direct disciple of Sri Mahavatar babaji.
@sv. Physical body can't live more than 150 years even with Siddhis.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Ok, let me read the book, other books are taking priority before the Yogi book :P
@TheDestroyer Wow, we agree at least on one thing!
So what do you make of @Tezz's answer here:
3
A: How could octogenarian heroes fight in Mahabharata?

TezzAs already discussed in the answer here, Vedas clearly declare 100 yrs. Of age to Humans. But this is for normal Human Body. Vedas also declare that it is possible to live long age by making the body purified by the fire of Yoga. Eg. Svetasvatara Upanishad in 2.12 states: पृथिव्यप्तेजोऽनिलखे ...

Will catch u later .. bye.

4:40 AM
@sv. Atleast vedas say we can live only for 100 years. So, we must agree with Shabda Pramana.
@sv. Ok. Bye!
@sv. BTW, Vedas talk about something which is always constant. So, they apply for all times.
That being which is constant at all times is truth and Truth is GOD.
See this logic of VEda samhitas as said by Swami Krishnanada
3
A: How can the Vedas be constant when they come from the 4 heads of Brahma?

The DestroyerVedas are eternal and apauruSheya (अपौरुषेय) which means "not produced by man". Veda Samhitas (core portions of Vedas) are heard by sages in deep tapasya. Veda Samhitas talk about eternal truths which are constant always. Truth is always same and it doesn't change with time. Vedas also say, time...

5:40 AM
@TheDestroyer "There's a form of Vishnu called "Pradyumna". Because of His form "Pradyumna", you have these doubts. 😀"...
haha... how?..
@sv. Who is Garikipati?...

5:59 AM
@Tezz haha. I don't know how. A Telugu acharya says the same to question,"Why Hindu Gods take avatars in Bharata Varsha only?"
Garikapati Narasimha Rao is a Telugu Avadhani (literary performer) in Andhra Pradesh, India. He is famous for memorizing a large number of poems and reciting them before the audience. In 1996 he performed Avadhanam with 1116 Prichchakas for 21 days in Kakinada. He has the title "Maha Sahasravadhani", one who can answer the questions of a thousand people at a time. He also delivers lectures on personality development based on Hindu mythology. He regularly appears on Telugu TV channels like Bhakti TV, and ABN Andhra Jyothi giving discourses on Hindu mythological texts like Ramayana, and Mahabharata...

sv.
@Tezz He's a Telugu & Sanskrit pandit, acharya, scholar etc. He gives discourses on MB, VR etc.
