Q: Does buying quinoa really harm Peruvian farmers?

NicA few years ago there were articles in the news that the rising popularity of quinoa was driving up prices and making it inaccessible for people in Peru and Bolivia where it had long been a traditional food. Joanna Blythman wrote in The Guardian: The appetite of countries such as ours for thi...

Q: What question types are we missing?

NicOur site currently has a low score for number of questions asked per day on Area51. We have 1.5 questions per day over the last month, but only 0.9 per day since the beta launched. We also have a small number of visits per day, and this is strongly correlated with a low number of questions ask...

Q: Are insects a better source of any nutrients than plant-based foods?

NicOne producer of insect foods makes some pretty bold claims about nutrition from cricket flour. 65% protein by volume, complete with all 9 amino acids A good ratio of omega 6:3 fats High in fibre High in minerals (iron, calcium) High in vitamin B12 But how does this compare to plant foods? Are...

Q: Which menu items at a sushi restaurant are probably not vegan?

NicSushi restaurants tend to have fairly standard menu (at least where I live in Canada). Aside from fish which is clearly not vegan, which other items on the menu are probably not vegan? I already learned from this related question that fish sauce and shrimp paste are common in Japanese cuisine, b...

@TheFarmer Insect based foods.. Gheez

@NogShine that's not vegetarian!

@Zanna Yeah. I know. How do they even eat it?

haha I guess it's just a mental adjustment... in some cultures eating insects is just a normal thing
I could never do that

I had previously suggested to make insect-eating off topic for the site, but didn't get much support for that.
So I figured hey, I might as well embrace it by creating a tag, writing the tag wiki, and adding relevant questions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Although I do recall that Zanna agreed insect-eating is off-topic
Personally I don't eat insects but I know at least 3 people who have already started eating insects to replace meat from larger animals while also embracing a mostly-vegetarian diet, so... it's at least tangentially related.

yeah, I reconsidered that a little bit
but when people start asking for insect recipes I might start voting to close them...

Nic
Whatever we do with it, we should probably be consistent with insect-eating and fish-eating (pescatarianism).

7:45 AM
idk... I mean, what's the connection
next people will be saying questions about chicken should be on topic
conversations I have had many times:

me: I'm veg*n
A: oh, do you eat fish?
----
A: I'm vegetarian
me: oh, nice!
A: I eat fish though

Q: How quickly could veganism realistically grow?

NicHow quickly could veganism realistically grow if changing attitudes wasn't the limiting factor? We've already heard that the world can't go vegan overnight, but if not overnight then how long? I'm curious about how quickly veganism could grow under three scenarios. For this question, consider tw...

@Zanna I'd love for you to share your opinion on this new Meta question about whether insect-eating should be on-topic. :)
@NogShine And you too, @NogShine! ^^

Q: Are questions about entomophagy (insect-eating) on-topic?

NicAre questions about entomophagy (insect-eating) on topic? Here are the questions: What do you call an almost vegetarian diet that includes honey and insects, but excludes milk and eggs? Can those who eat insects be considered vegetarians? Are insects a feasible source of proteins for the new mi...

Q: B12 supplementation in the livestock industry

unorIn debates, the contra side often claims veganism can’t be good because vegans have to supplement B12 (appeal to nature), while the pro side sometimes claims that even carnists supplement B12 indirectly because the animals get B12 supplements. I would like to find out to which extent the latter ...

Q: How should we tag "bad things in food"?

NicI've noticed that we have a few questions about "bad things" in/on food, sometimes seeking suggestions on ways to deal with that. Whereas the nutrition tag is about getting sufficient nutrients, these questions seem to be about avoiding problematic matter. Those things fit into several different ...
