Your parents' opinion is indeed interesting. I like the display matrix too, but it doesn't work as-is for an icon, as the lines are too thin. Maybe that could be fixed, though. Maybe I'll do a parallel lines where the lines that are not part of A P L are black. I also thought of adding additional black stripes above and below to make it square…

I sort of mentally discarded the parallel lines one because of it being old, but it is pretty cool

also, the ligatures one is by far the best in terms of readability at a small scale - worth considering?

Old is not necessarily bad, and what's new today will be old soon enough. Only IBM's logo doesn't need to change :-)
