@MarkRead Hello and welcome to my realm!

@SimplyBeautifulArt Have you made a script for that yet?
Cuz there needs to be one

lol, no
I actually got to go, I'll be back later

@SimplyBeautifulArt NÖÖÖÖÒŒŒÔÕØØ

Who knew the chats allowed for you to get different character variations by holding down a key with shift? interesting...
Works on the main site too. Why did no-one tell me about this?!?!?!!

@SimplyBeautifulArt Hello.

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED
Also, anyone interested in reading about integration techniques can see there
@S.C.B. New content by the way

OK.
Shoot.
A user was removed.

@S.C.B. Bruh, I've had that happen to me at least 10 times already
no worries

I don't worry.
Does MSE make money?

no idea
@S.C.B. By the way, I don't think that's a normal limit question

What limit?

never mind then

@everyone good night!
Or good morning.

9 hours later…
11:25 AM
@S.C.B. MSE does not make money, but some other CS-related SE sites have advertisements from CS-related companies.
As far as I know.
@BrevanEllefsen I can't get different character variations. Perhaps it's your computer or browser and not the SE site?

@SimplyBeautifulArt Hello, I have summoned thee.

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED

Yes you have.
What happened to the big number contest?

Uh, I suppose we are still judging XD

I thought the event was over.
Hmmm...

It is kinda over
you can still submit of course

2:51 PM
What kind of big numbers were there?

Mine and @user21820

3:09 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt I assume you know what $$\int_{0}^{1} \frac{\ln (x+1)}{x^2+1}$$ is?

Hi, Mr. @ParamanandSingh

this is about the question you just solved via recurrence

Are you Indian?

Yes
How did you manage to think as well as type so fast
this was really a gem of an answer in so short time

3:12 PM
I assume you're refering to SBA's answer?
Maybe..

This one:
10
A: Prove that $\left(\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)^n + \left(\frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)^n$ is always odd for any natural $n$.

Simply Beautiful ArtNote that it satisfies the following recursive formula: $$a_{n+2}=3a_{n+1}+2a_n\tag{$\star$}$$ where $a_n=\left(\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}2\right)^n+\left(\frac{3-\sqrt{17}}2\right)^n$. Thus, if $a_{n+1}$ is odd, then $a_{n+2}$ is odd. $(\star)$ comes from noting that $$a^2=3a+2\implies a=\frac{3\...

but it appears he is inactive in the chat room right now

He'll return soon (hopefully).

@ParamanandSingh ah, I'm here
It's obvious, look at the quadratic formula and you can blatantly see it

3:15 PM
Ok, just wanted to say that you don't need to include more in your answer.
i was amazed at the speed of your thoughts and typing

Lol, it's fine
It's how I role :D

before one could reach the recurrence idea it was there in your answer

Lmao
I have my moments, that's all

yeah i understand

As I sit in calculus class
As everyone is deriving well-known Taylor series

3:17 PM
*roll
Isn't it?

:-|
Okay...

Are you creating sort of poem about sitting in a calculus class? with all lines starting from "As"? or you are describing your situation when you thought of this recurrence solution? :)

The latter
:-(

3:20 PM
oh

Shoot.

from your answers it appears you should be teaching calculus classes rather than sitting in them

Last math course offered, so I can't skip it

:'(
High school

3:23 PM
I am not very much aware of US education. So high school means 16 year old students or less? or more?
in india high school is 11-15 years old

18 or less

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school. == History == The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless...

American High School

Where are you from @ParamanandSingh

3:25 PM
I am from India

How many people from SE are from India?

Ah, cool
XD

I don't really know the contribution in MSE from India, but I guess a majority is from US

Well, there are a lot of Indians on the internet, so I guessed there were some.

Lol, the only series we should evaluate by hand are geometric series or telescoping series
In my class
And I turn my head.

3:28 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt the number of people calling your answer "non-obvious"

I almost cry

it's truly incredible

@Starfall tru

i suppose my answer is more obvious though

3:30 PM
"my answer is obvious, it's just that nobody can see that it's obvious" - starfall 2017

@Starfall: i would consider it as a bit more non-obvious than the one from "Simply", but the degree of obviousness lies in the "eyes of beholder"

@ParamanandSingh you want to find that a certain expression is odd - if everything involved were integers, you would reduce mod 2 without a second thought
but that's exactly what i am doing

it's just that to reduce algebraic integers modulo primes, you have to take some care with what you are doing
i did it by embedding it into Q_2, you could also reduce modulo some prime over 2 in Q(sqrt(17)) directly
the local global principle of valuation theory says that it's the same thing, pretty much

@Starfall: I do get the idea (although I am not even a novice in abstract algebra)

3:33 PM
@Starfall sadly, I can't understand you yet
XD

What are you doing? (I mean, what kind of math do you call that?)

@SimplyBeautifulArt for example, my method readily reveals the following very general result: let's say that x_1, x_2 are the roots of x^2 + bx + c - if both b, c are odd and the roots are not rational, then x_1^n + x_2^n is divisible by 2 iff n is divisible by 3
which probably follows from the recurrence also
but the problem with the recurrence is that you wouldn't quite think of this result by looking at the recurrence, although you can prove it using the recurrence

@starfall: Looks I do need to study some abstract algebra to understand deeply your technique

@ParamanandSingh what kind of stuff do you do?

I am a software engineer, but mostly in love with mathematics instead of computer and IT, the software thing is more to earn livelyhood

3:38 PM
Mhm..

Hey guys, its almost dinner time here in India. Bye Bye

I'd like to do random math. I intend on learning integration and series techniques
Bye! @ParamanandSingh

Is this obvious @Starfall that if $a_{n}=x_{1}^n+x_{2}^n$ and $x_{1}, x_{2}$ are solutions to $$x^2+px-1 =0$$where $p \equiv 1 \pmod {2}$ then $\gcd(a_{n}, a_{n+1})=1$?(I mean, it's a simple problem, but I am curious)

@S.C.B. yeah - the same method reveals it pretty readily
the key here is that the constant term being 1, or -1, implies that the roots are always p-adic units for any prime p

What is $p$-adic?

3:48 PM

A: Increasing/decreasing functions: Suppose $f(x) = \frac{x+k}{x^2 + k}$ is decreasing for all x. What range of values could the constant k have?

S.C.B.Note that the derivative of $$\frac{x+k}{x^2+k}$$ is $$\frac{-2kx+k-x^2}{(x^2+k)^2}$$ By the quotient rule. Since $(x^2+k)^2 \ge 0$, if the function is decreasing we have $$-x^2-2kx+k \le 0 \iff x^2+2kx-k \ge 0$$ For all $x$. Since this polynomial is always positive, the discriminant must not be ...

That wasn't accepted, unfortunately.

yes
any of the form p(x)/q(x)

That feeling when you realize that you have checked MSE every single day for the last year and 5 months except for one day
and you just sit there wondering what happened on that day
I mean, my rep per day is pretty minimal. A measly 17.77 per day
but I try to read once a day
I wonder what happened that one day
Best part about not pinging anyone right now
Is that there are people in this chat who are dormant
but I am refusing to awaken the sleeping beasts
I feel like an adventurer walking, torch in hand, through the dark cave
across the icy tundra
crawling through the great African savannas
ok, monologue over

Q: Help me cheating in the exam (actually legitimate)

cnmesrWe are allowed to use a calculator in our linear algebra exam. Luckily, my calculator can also do matrix calculations. Let's say there is a task like this: Calculate the rank of this matrix: $$M =\begin{pmatrix} 5 & 6 & 7\\ 12 &4 &9 \\ 1 & 7 & 4 \end{pmatrix}$$ The problem with thi...

What even?
@amWhy If your looking for something to close...

at least he's honest

According to Kent's Categorical Imperative he's doing alright by not lying? Maybe he just subscribes to a radical branch of that philosophy?

well, not exactly
not lying doesn't mean you're somehow exonerated from moral culpability
it just means you're not polluting the website as badly as people who are not honest about their motives
like people who post questions from ongoing contests
i think you guys are too hostile towards people who don't care about mathematics
who knows, maybe the guy will major in history and will never need to row reduce another matrix in his entire life after this exam
you should be taking these little opportunities to put a stick in the wheel, so to speak, if you're not content with how things are done right now

9:25 PM
even more so, since that's probably all you can do
@SimplyBeautifulArt that's a nice reaction
it contributed to the discussion immensely, thank you

maybe @SimplyBeautifulArt turns on a ruby script which sends "LMFAO", "XD", "ROFL", ":-)" in routine intervals when he is afk

@SimplyBeautifulArt seriously, why aren't you saying anything

9:29 PM
is my profile picture too intimidating for you

sigh

@SimplyBeautifulArt do you enjoy this

it appears that maturity still remains out of the grasp of some highly reputable people on this site
this snide, insinuating and condescending tone is not conducive to any form of worthwhile discourse
i would have expected better from someone with 177k reputation
it appears reputation alone is not a "good person make"

9:55 PM
Is "good person make" proper grammar?
