First, the の seen in the first sentence is nominalizer, that converts verbs and adjectives into nouns. See this post for how it works, but in short, it is の that make it means "small(er) one" here. Second, より ("than") doesn't only attach to nouns but to verbs and adjectives too. It also doesn't ...

とすると、
「AよりBのほうがいいです」にあてはめると、

not sure how reliable that answer is though

another link says they bubble to repel harmful substances (salt), if there's an excess of salt, they spend a lot of their moisture bubbling so they dehydrate and eventually die

hmm, the anti-salt defence is more of a foam... I'm not sure how it made the single big bubble

The picture on that answers.com page is of a Janthina snail, which uses bubbles for an entirely different purpose
