BTW I think the confusion with the "honorific" thing is that some people use the word "honorific" for everything, even ちゃん or whatever.

Yay, I have 20k reputation! :-)

Anonymous
I feel reputable!

2:58 AM
Yeay!
I personally worry about having a high reputation. Because then I look like I supposedly know what I'm talking about, when I don't and regularly say incorrect things.

Anonymous
You can always bounty it off, then ;-)

I think I know most of the most common ones

My study buddy is way into 四字熟語

Anonymous
Should I really know all of those?

3:55 AM
Heh, I hardly know any of those.

4:21 AM
I recognize some of them... but I tend to brush 四字熟語 off if I don't recognize them, so I wonder how many more I'd recognize if I already knew them.

Oh, so it's a little bit like "Is anyone home?". Thanks for explaining
How does ごめんください works when leaving another person's house?
Just like regular "Bye"?
On a totally unrelated note, people get super snobby whenever "cooking wine" is mentioned
Like "that stuff is nasty". "only cook with wine that you'll drink"
> extactly, can't trust those computers
yes, because NSA

6:28 AM
@3to5businessdays The biggest difference between the "hello-anybody-home-ごめんください" and the "good-bye-ごめんください" is that while the former is said by literally everybody even including toddlers and it is not considered a phrase for the more refined. It is a 100%-equal-opportunity type of greeting.
The good-bye kind, however, is used by the "better" or "more refined" speakers. Saying it would not necessarily make you look good if the other things you usually say do not match it in refinedness. Not too many young people, therefore, use the phrase -- at least not very often. They would say 失礼します/いたします instead for good-bye.

6:50 AM
just learned new word: キャッチコピー
和製英語makes me sick...
to those interested here's wiki page about it: ja.wikipedia.org/wikiキャッチコピー

8:53 AM
On Meta Stack Overflow, they mention a Japanese Stack Overflow as "in progress" meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/271998/…

I think 和製英語 is interesting, although sometimes it catches me off guard

Anonymous
Loanwords being repurposed across languages is totally normal and I don't see any reason to be judgmental about it...

Anonymous
It's not that uncommon to find people with strong feelings about loanwords. I've never quite understood why, though

I often misinterpret
there was ガラス. Back then I was like, "What do you mean by broken grass?"

ガラス is from Portuguese

@Rilakkuma your link didn't parse correctly for some reason
yeah...

Anonymous
11:49 AM
Or wait

?
I often forget about non-English imported words

Anonymous
I thought it was from Portuguese, but it looks like it's actually from Dutch

Anonymous
Guess I misremembered :-)

Now, that won't do
How do you take N1 if you don't remember that :)

Anonymous
Heheh!

11:52 AM
Fried my first fish today

Anonymous
Congratulations!

Anonymous
Was it stinky?

Thanks. I think my sibling threw one away (there were 4)
Well it smelled like fish...

Anonymous
I think fried fish are aromatic

They were whole fish

Anonymous
11:54 AM
What sort of fish?

As opposed to fillets
I don't know the name... but it's quite tiny
mini fish

Anonymous
Mini fish! :-)

Might be mini pomfrets
well, the general shape looks the same...
So I tried a technique I found online that uses little oil (!?) for the first 2... didn't turn out that well
maybe the wok was too hot.
next I was like screw that, I'm just going to use the conventional way and use plenty of oil... not too sure how that turned out though, as I gave my sibling those 2

Anonymous
Ohh... I don't really know how to fry fish

Fillet (salmon mmmm...) is probably much easier

Anonymous
11:58 AM
I have a steam oven

steam... oven?
not baking oven?

Anonymous
Well, I have two ovens

must be nice
I missed having access to an oven

Anonymous
One is a convection oven, which is like a normal oven but with fans to circulate the air

Anonymous
The other is a steam oven, which is like a convection oven except with steam options

Anonymous
12:00 PM
The steam oven is pretty small

Do it have a pipe connecting to a tap or something?

Anonymous
It's really fun, though!

Anonymous
No, you have to fill its little water thing

ah
Is it microwave-sized?

Anonymous
It is microwave-sized

Anonymous
12:01 PM
I'll take pictures later! :-)

p/s: チーンする is "to microwave" right?

Anonymous
So I would try steaming the fish!

Anonymous
Yes but I think without ー is the basic word

Steamed fish is sooo good

Anonymous
チンする

Anonymous
12:02 PM
But it's the sound a microwave makes, チン

So you have steamed fish before?

Anonymous

Anonymous
Uh huh but I don't cook a lot of fish

Anonymous
I usually eat vegetarian food

neither do I
even though it's healthier than meat, I think

Anonymous
12:05 PM
Oh I always considered fish a kind of meat

Just using the term I see somewhere, like meat and fish
Probably the nutrition triangle thingy

Anonymous
I guess a lot of people think of fish as something different :-)

so what do you make with your steam oven?
muffins?

Anonymous
Oh, you can make all sorts of things! It's perfect for muffins

Anonymous
It's also really good for reheating food

Anonymous
12:08 PM
It doesn't dry food out when you reheat it

By steaming it?

Anonymous
Yes

Is there "conventional mode" and "steam mode"? Or does it always use steam?

Anonymous
Yes it has modes, you can turn off steam or just use a little moisture

Anonymous
You can tell it to start steaming halfway

12:10 PM
sounds very nifty
can you control it with wifi?

Anonymous
It's a little oven but it's big enough for most stuff

Anonymous
Hehe, I don't think so!

turkey?
mini turkey?

Anonymous
But the other oven is much bigger

Pain in the ass to clean though
Esp. if one doesn't clean often

Anonymous
12:12 PM
Steam ovens are really easy to clean

Given the compact size factor, I'd expect it to
I'm talking about regular ones

Anonymous
You turn it on and have it steam itself and then you open it up and wipe it down

Anonymous
Cleaning a regular oven is terrible t-t

I'm just waiting for a self-cleaning oven to be invented

Anonymous
I have a hot plate, too!

12:13 PM
do you have a microwave?

Anonymous
Oh, you know, I think most ovens these says are "self-cleaning" but I think it's a lie

wait, they say that?

Anonymous
I do have a microwave.

Anonymous
It's just above the steam oven

Anonymous
12:15 PM
They're the same size and shape (and manufacturer)

I remember making mashed potato with a microwave... so convenient

Anonymous
I think you can put lots of stuff you'd normally microwave into the steam oven

Anonymous
It's good at potatoes! :-)

Hmmm.... Japanese Stack Overflow huh?

Anonymous
Yeah, they've been working on it for a while

12:17 PM
Didn't know there were that many JP Stack Overflow users

It's raining here, by the way. The first rain of the season!

Celebrate it with steamed fish!

I wonder if it counts as 梅雨入り :-)

rainy season?
Ugh, can't stand Youtube videos with audio tracks
most of them are so bad
* the music I mean

Anonymous
We have a rainy season and a longer dry season here

12:32 PM
@非回答者 got it. thanks

I'm looking at top questions on Seasoned Advice

@snailboat rationally loanwords are fine. However the reason why people are frustrated while learning them is that basically these words have no sense in their original language and no sense (originally) in the derived language, so in fact you have to get over the fact of learning nonsense which apparently has some meaning.
To look at it further - I often get comments from Germans about Latvian language being "weird" or even "stupid" because there are many loanwords from Germanic languages which retained their form and meaning as they were used in middle ages and have very little sense when compared to modern German or Swedish.

Anonymous
That's too bad. People have weird linguistic biases

nothing to do here, people are not rational!
:)

Anonymous
Like, there are people who get upset by the English word futon

the reason I got frustrated today is because my 上司 used the word at the meeting and I was struggling to understand what are they trying to say.

Anonymous
But frustration is totally understandable

和製英語 can be tough for me sometimes

what's your "favourite" one?

Cunning paper

Or maybe go sign

1:18 PM

collect $200?
green light?

googling says the hand with pointed finger
however I still doubt it

jeez rilak use a dictionary :)

lol

ah "go-ahead" was what I was looking for but couldn't remember
yeah definitely some interesting I should keep a list of interesting ones

Order made is a good one

about year 2009 when economy went down I often heard ワンマン運転 phrase at train stations. Pretty clear but still somewhat weird and funny.

oh man, so カンニング itself means "cheating"

cunning

I thought it's only in terms of カンニング・ペーパー
no teacher I wasn't cheating, I was cunning

Mug cup is a cute one

yes. But always feeling like asking どっち?

jeez I was just googling mug cup and I saw this

I also love words, not sure what's their scientific name, used mostly in speech, such as
@3to5businessdays I googled "cup" by entering "g cup" as a shortcut for google. Guess what went out!

I smell a trap
something fishy
oh right
I fried fish just now
sorry

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Hee

1:33 PM
right, I have to make some food too.

wow that kanji was scary

still better than 鬱

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Don't worry, it's usually written in katakana

Anonymous
鬱 is memorable and distinctive so I don't actually think of it as a hard kanji

those were just batats. Normally written in hiragana as さつま芋

1:35 PM
@snailboat yeah

but I have deep respect to Satsuma so feel obliged to write it in kanji every time
:D

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays You should be able to read it, though

Anonymous
You should know 薩 as in 菩薩 I think

sounded like some religious food

lol

Anonymous
1:36 PM
and 摩 has 麻 which is pretty much always ま as an 音読み

wow, great tip. Thank you @snailboat

ooo yesssss
I feel enlightened
must be the Buddha

sounds like a recipe

yes
200g of 菩薩

one middle sized 薩摩芋
and two mug cups of 開眼

1:38 PM
clap hands 3x

and bow 1.5 times

then put it in a steam oven

but better in 釜

yes father sitting on gold is always better

Anonymous
Everything's better in a steam oven

1:40 PM
by the way, is not 税 scary?

Anonymous
As a kanji or a concept? :-)

horned 兄 came to eat my wheat :/

Anonymous
I think the kanji is pretty basic but the concept is scary!

both. It just looks like a horned guy with something large in his hand.

or a horny guy with something large in his hand
wait that doesn't sound right

Anonymous
1:41 PM
Ohh, you would like the 旧字体 better then

Anonymous
It has the 八頭 looking like 八 and not upside down

Anonymous
So instead of being like >:-( it's more like <:-)

Still looks like an inquisitor!

Anonymous
Actually, when I started learning kanji with 兌, I thought it looked like a little alien

indeed, looks like!
I think a simple 貝 is also very cute

Anonymous
1:43 PM
Oh, me too! :-)

Anonymous

Trying to imagine ancient Chinese people who wrote an eye with some cute legs below.

yes. I think the kanji for 蝸牛 could be much better as 貝牛

1:45 PM
nooooo, why you have to torture me like this ---> kotobank.jp/word/%E8%85%95%E5%8A%9B

Anonymous

btw, long time ago Japanese teacher told that 風 has 虫 inside because ancient people thought insects come by air from the wind.
What was my surprise when I learned this was not a myth and many insects in Kyushu are actually "imported" by wind from the continental China.

Small spiders can build little silk "balloons" and balloon themselves a thousand miles away from land

Anonymous
1:50 PM
And pass between islands or continents!

amazing.
Do you know which species do it?

Anonymous
I'm not sure, but I think it's a number of smaller species

great article, thank you!

2:01 PM
spiderballoon
is that a relative of snailplane?
what's in the picture in the medium article?

Anonymous
I'm actually a bit afraid of spiders, but I used to live somewhere with a big spider that lived outside my front door, and I'd go out and watch it every night to try to get used to spiders and not be afraid of them

I guess this is how mr 蜘蛛-san's secretions look when making silk

Anonymous
So I'm not too afraid of them anymore

Anonymous
Although I still don't want to touch them :-)

Anonymous
But I know someone who keeps pet spiders

Anonymous
2:06 PM
And thinks they're cute

some spiders are, such as タカアシグモ

Anonymous
I don't know any names of spiders in Japanese

Anonymous
I know a couple in English

When I go to insect museums, and see those huge spiders
... scary

Anonymous
I guess タカアシグモ would be daddy long legs?

Anonymous
2:07 PM
Jumping spiders are cute. I don't know what their official name is

even my wife keeps one in the house. Not as a pet, more like a insecticide means.

Anonymous

@snailboat jumping spiders are called "jumping spiders" or Salticidae
@snailboat yes, so long so when one sits behind the wall clock you see leg ends
cute indeed! :)

It's all like ":)"

most spiders are ooOO, ,OOoo
ot even OOooY YooOO <-- the scary type

I don't like wolf spiders

We have them here

day before yesterday I found a spider mimicking an ant on the plants outside. Killed one before mistaking it with a termite scout. :/
let me google them... what are they

2:12 PM
looks like a sad frog
do they bite, @snailboat ?

Anonymous
@Rilakkuma It . . . it does look like a sad frog

Anonymous
I miss my pet frog

Anonymous
@Rilakkuma Oh, I don't know.

Anonymous
I guess all spiders are venomous, but I don't think it has a medically significant bite

what kind of frog did you have?

Anonymous
2:17 PM
I don't remember. I was too young

Anonymous
It was little and green and started out as a tadpole :-)

Anonymous
I remember watching it a lot

Anonymous
And feeding it. Feeding a pet frog is gross

nice! A water frog or tree frog?

Anonymous
Oh, I think it was a water frog

Anonymous
2:18 PM
It was my first pet that I wasn't supposed to touch very much because the frog wouldn't like being handled

what did it eat?

Anonymous
Before that I had pet hamsters, all of whom seemed to like being petted :-)

Anonymous
@Rilakkuma They eat fruit flies

Anonymous
Like everyone's favorite, Drosophila melanogaster!

Drosophilas! Yes, I eat them too sometimes.
Not on purpose though.

Anonymous
2:19 PM
Oh! . . . gross :-)

planet.uwc.ac.za/nisl/biodiversity/loe/page_108.htm - very interesting frog by the way.

Anonymous
I really liked my frog, and I had a nice big illustrated book of frog species when I was young

Anonymous
I don't know why I forgot what species the frog was

Anonymous
My favorite from the book were the poison dart frogs

@Rilakkuma Wow!

did you know it is possible to recognize different types of cicadas by their voice?

Anonymous
Oh, I bet! But I can't do that

those in my video are not ciciadas, but crickets and something else with swirling sound
cicadas are rather "alien-like" with their voices

Anonymous
Uh-huh, we have crickets here

Anonymous
I recognized them! :-)

Anonymous
2:43 PM
I like crickets

Interestingly western Japan has majority of クマゼミ while eastern Japan majority of アブラゼミ
and earlier - Minmin. Also eastern
they have very cute yet hysterical voice

ミンミンゼミ are pretty damn familiar to me... just west of yokohama

yes, みんみん are everywhere! very summerish sound :)
@jkerian are you somewhere in Shonan?

@Rilakkuma That's where I work, I actually live in Yokohama (live in the city, commute out every morning... :)

3:05 PM
Nice! Opposite commute is very handy.
I live next to Yoyogi park - commuting from here is surprisingly uncomfortable - you have to reach major hubs such as Shibuya or Shinjuku or use Tokyo Metro, so bicycle is the fastest way to get to the work.
Even taxi is slower.
