I learned about them while I was learning some Japanese words. The Japanese word for plover is chidori

Another funny one for me was learning that there's no scientific distinction between pigeons and doves. And they're both hato in Japanese!

Exactly. "exceedingly" in the last example

今日はあまりにあつい is ok to say if both speaker and listener understand that they are talking about something that is being prevented from happening because of the heat. Without the ni, this is not posible.
