@snailboat The guy was talking about this ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
Which I think is what you were talking about. I still don't know what he meant , but it sounded like he say まふー>おう。Maybe he said もう? I might just be dumb.

Does anyone know when Japanese began using zero? I know that zero is somewhat of a foreign thing in a lot of mathematics, but I'm wondering why they didn't make their own word for it, and just when it came about...

5:02 AM
from what I remember there was quite extensive article about zero in Japanese math in wikipedia
needs some search

ssb
5:53 AM
@Anthony The word 零 does exist, but I don't know about its etymology..

The Sunzi Suanjing, of unknown date but estimated to be dated from the 1st to 5th centuries, and Japanese records dated from the eighteenth century, describe how counting rods were used for calculations. According to A History of Mathematics, the rods "gave the decimal representation of a number, with an empty space denoting zero."[26] The counting rod system is considered a positional notation system.[27]

Zero was not treated as a number at that time, but as a "vacant position", unlike the Indian mathematicians who developed the numerical zero.[28] Ch’in Chu-shao's 1247 Mathematical Treat
and this is what wiki says

it just tuned out that the person who had downvoted my 逃げたくなった answer was sawa san... senshin's answer had +21 votes yesterday. now it has +20.
(T.T)
My answer had +10-1 yesterday, and now it's +10. Maybe he thought I was not the first answerer in that thread, cos kaji-san said "he got it first by a few seconds"

who was sawa by the way?

the person who asked the mods to delete his accont
Still...
senshin's answer has twice as many upvotes

ssb
maybe people just upvoted it because it was a little longer

そうなの?へぇ
でもいいの・・・そのことは
the most shocking thing for me is...
the one who hated me was sawa san! ahaha

lol
I've got some fair amount of hate from someone at Quora too without any apparent reason
probably because some people feel like it is their exclusive right to answer on particular topics

6:22 AM
So, is it like, they're trying to drive you away from the forum?

yep
eventually I've got banned from there completely for quite minor violation - i used distorted version of my name, not the "very real one"

ssb
People have a lot of strange reactions to online communities
And I think can be easily offended when it doesn't conform to their idea of what it should be

nooooooo

ssb
in some cases, anyway. not everyone takes it so seriously.

ssb
aha
Choko sama are you OK?

I'm not talking to you either

ssb
you seem disturbed by something!

no im not okay
yes yes yes
sumimasen!

6:26 AM
I guess it comes from the overall lack of communication skills. Some people have the Internet as their only window to the "outside world" and show the same lack there by getting offended and stuff.

ssb
@Choko shocked by the sawa ordeal?

sousou
aaaaaa
doushiyou...

ssb
upset because you were downvoted?

sawa san gomennasai! okoranaide

@Anthony Why do you suppose English didn't make its own word for zero? I mean, we use this loanword zero instead... :-)

Hello snailboat, how are you?

Anonymous
Hello!

We've had some upsets here recently, it seems. I hope it will get better soon.

@Choko If you don't mind my asking . . . who is Nick sensei? :-)

I've never had Japanese pizza hut before
I was surprised to find out that Japan has both pizza hut and dominos because I never saw them when I was in Kyoto, even
definitely none in Kumamoto

うちの近くには、ピザハットと、ドミノピザとかリトルパーティとかシカゴピザあるみたいです・・たぶん

I haven't really eaten pizza this year but I like to make homemade pizza, so maybe I'll do that soon... :-) Mmm, pizza!

ssb

Unfortunately "Chicago Pizza" the chain restaurant in Japan bears no resemblance to Chicago style pizza

ssb
Unfortunately my only experience with CPK has been with their frozen pizzas that you can buy in stores
just the thought of them makes my stomach upset..

@snailboat Oh, didn't know we are on the way to graduating. I thought we were still held back by some of the criteria.

@3to5businessdays The Area 51 system is pretty ancient. The criteria were designed as goals for back when betas lasted only 90 days

Anonymous
They've updated their expectations and, of course, betas are now much, much longer

Anonymous
But they haven't really updated the Area 51 page

Anonymous
So I wouldn't worry too much about the exact numbers on that page

Anonymous
Ideally they should be increasing over time

Anonymous
In a very broad sense (we shouldn't worry if they dip for a bit)
