I had a question about modifying noun phrases.
I have this written on a packet "直射日光の当たらない涼しい所に保管してください"
If I reverse the order of adjectival clauses in the noun phrase, would it be acceptable?
I.e. Is "涼しい直射日光の当たらない所" acceptable?

Someone else can probably answer better, but I have a feeling about that

which is

the distance between the modifier and what is being modified is increased

涼しい is modifying 所 still, but now it's far away

And it looks like it might be modifying 直射日光, except it can't be for semantic reasons

So I have to back up and re-parse it and I have a harder time

So I think it isn't as good that way

That's just the feeling I get reading it as a learner of Japanese :-)

I think it's still "acceptable" but not as good

There, I've dared to answer a question again.

It's fun. It forces me to research thoroughly, so I learn stuff.

(In this case, I don't know if it was really helpful to anyone except me, because ssb already answered the question.)

@snailplane, I just noticed that the adjectives were not connected with て
If it were 涼しくて直射日光の当たらない所, would it be better?

@F;aw Good point! I donno. I don't normally join adjectives without て, but I guess I assumed it was fine in your example... I'm not going to try to answer that :-)

I don't know too. But since it's printed instructions on a Japanese product
I'm assuming it is perfect grammar

@Flaw Maybe 当たらない is special because -ない is a 助動詞 and not a 形容詞

@Flaw I turned your example into a question, but not the same question you asked.

A-ha! I was right. It was because it's not really a 形容詞. Now I feel silly for not mentioning that in my question :-)

@Flaw I think the answer to my question might indirectly answer yours, too. japanese.stackexchange.com/a/11367/1478
