Shazer2
I want to be fluent :(
ssb
better get studying!
Shazer2
I want to start studying again!
I haven't studied lately, but in the past I did.
I don't know where to pick it back up at!
ssb
never too late to start back up
what level were you studying at before
Shazer2
6:47 AM
hmm I'm not sure
I'm fluent with hiragana and katakana
and I know
some
kanji, but I'd say my vocab is rather limited and grammar too.
ssb
well that's where you start, then
Shazer2
vocab and grammar?
ssb
get more vocabulary under your belt
learn with kanji
i'm an advocate of using anki every day but not everyone loves it
Shazer2
I love anki :)
jkerian
anki can be pretty mean when you fall behind in studying
ssb
6:50 AM
for a long time my method of studying involved continuing with anki every day and just interacting with the stuff I wanted to be able to understand
Shazer2
@ssb, can you hold a conversation and/or live in Japan?
ssb
and then adding everything that I didn't already know into anki
i'm at the level where i don't know if i'm allowed to say i'm fluent or not
Shazer2
do you live in Japan?
ssb
yes i do
Shazer2
that's so amazing!
i visited japan last year on a school excursion :)
ssb
6:52 AM
also a big part of my studying was based on reaching a certain JLPT level
that helps a lot
definitely the best way to get better is to live here, though
jkerian
The JLPT prep materials help to focus your study
Shazer2
i don't think I want to do JLPT
I just want to be able to converse with my Japanese friends :)
jkerian
I don't think the JLPT material itself is particularly good, but any focus is better than none...
ssb
even if you don't want to do JLPT they prorivde an awesome structure
Shazer2
and continue my interest for Japan and Japanese! Maybe one day I'll do JLPT
ssb
6:53 AM
they say "this is what you should know at this level"
it's a great 'trunk' before you branch out into your interests
Shazer2
hmm maybe I will!
ssb
don't worry about the tests if you don't want, but picking up a Jlpt vocabulary or grammar book, for example, never hurts
Shazer2
I'll get anki now
What do you guys think of AJATT?
ssb
i don't know much about his methods or anything and i don't read his site
i don't remember what he promised, something along the lines of being fluent in a year and a half?
but yeah, that's really unlikely.
Shazer2
not the project specifically but the idea of immersion
i immersed myself in japanese for a while and as a result i believe my reading ability greatly increased
my friend - who studies japanese - said i can read faster than her + all her classmates
ssb
6:58 AM
well, not to sound rude or anything, but if your level of reading comprehension is "some" kanji then that distinction probably doesn't mean too much
my personal opinion on the matter is that the approach you should take depends on what your goals are
like you, i wanted to improve reading
so i focused on that a LOT, and I learned as many words as I could and as many kanji as I could
and it worked great, I can read just about anything that your average Japanese person can read
Shazer2
by reading speed i mean of hiragana and katakana
ssb
however the price of that is I'm a little weaker in some areas of speaking, and I WAS really weak at listening
Shazer2
it's almost the pace of my english
ssb
it's good that you've got hiragana and katakana down, of course
but that's just the tip of the iceberg
Shazer2
oh most definitely
kanji is so daunting, writing is so daunting and both speaking/listening are a hard task
ssb
7:01 AM
the hard part is going to be seeing all of the kanji enough to get used to them and be able to pick
those
up at an acceptable pace
that's what I used anki for
studying vocab/kanji every day
the most important piece of advice I can give you is to study every day
even if it's just 10 minutes
study a little bit every day
Shazer2
i think that's what i'll do
ssb
don't fall behind
Shazer2
i'll try!
ssb
of course this is all what worked for me
your mileage may vary
Shazer2
i'd like to think i'm a relatively quick learner
or maybe i just think i am
ssb
7:03 AM
that's good, and it will certainly help
Shazer2
i stopped learning japanese before i learnt katakana
ssb
but the unfortunate part about Japanese is that there's a huge mountain of stuff you just have to memorize
Shazer2
so i had to learn that myself, i picked it up in a week or so
ssb
and you have to review or else you WILL forget it. that's where anki comes in.
Shazer2
any decks you recommend?
ssb
7:10 AM
i'm not sure what's good anymore. I started like 5 years ago and used a deck of ~8000 JLPT words. Once I finished that I just kept adding words on my own
pick one that looks good and go for it
Shazer2
sounds good

Yes~~~
Shazer2
Yay!

Tokyo Nagoya
In the world of Japanese as a foreign language, yes.
Shazer2
8:16 AM
what instead?
ちょこれーと
Do we? @TokyoNagoya
Tokyo Nagoya
not in Japan
ssb
i'd just say いいえ
ちょこれーと
Yeah
Tokyo Nagoya
I've never said どういたしまして in my whole life except n English classes where I had to translate "Thank you."
I mean "You are welcome"
ちょこれーと
8:18 AM
edit 機能が使えますよ
ssb
just like how I don't think in English we actually say "you're welcome" very much
ちょこれーと
You don't?
ssb
maybe we say "you're welcome" more often than you say "どういたしまして"
ちょこれーと
ほう・・
ssb
but i feel like the more common response is like "sure" or "no problem" or "don't mention it" or
there are many choices
ちょこれーと
8:20 AM

8:34 AM
As in, plain old Japanese
ssb
they like to use dialects a lot
ちょこれーと
@Shazer2 Yeah, that's why I said,
Tokio ist gemein!
Shazer2
It's so confusing :(
Oh, because of the different dialect?
I thought he was genuinely being mean.
Tokyo Nagoya
It ain't fun talking standard, ya know?
ちょこれーと

ssb
8:35 AM
some of us don't talk so good

404 Not Found

ssb
why not just run it manually?
404 Not Found
@ssb what is diff btwn deactive and uninstall?
ssb
i don't know, but i assume that one just disables the functionality temporarily while uninstall removes the plugin completely
why don't you try it and see
jkerian
9:56 AM
