@snailboat おお・・
なるほど・・
おやすみ・・

ssb
やほー

6:43 AM
こんばんは!

ssb
はろー

I want to be fluent :(

ssb
better get studying!

I want to start studying again!
I haven't studied lately, but in the past I did.
I don't know where to pick it back up at!

ssb
never too late to start back up
what level were you studying at before

6:47 AM
hmm I'm not sure
I'm fluent with hiragana and katakana
and I know some kanji, but I'd say my vocab is rather limited and grammar too.

ssb
well that's where you start, then

vocab and grammar?

ssb
get more vocabulary under your belt
learn with kanji
i'm an advocate of using anki every day but not everyone loves it

I love anki :)

anki can be pretty mean when you fall behind in studying

ssb
6:50 AM
for a long time my method of studying involved continuing with anki every day and just interacting with the stuff I wanted to be able to understand

@ssb, can you hold a conversation and/or live in Japan?

ssb
and then adding everything that I didn't already know into anki
i'm at the level where i don't know if i'm allowed to say i'm fluent or not

do you live in Japan?

ssb
yes i do

that's so amazing!
i visited japan last year on a school excursion :)

ssb
6:52 AM
also a big part of my studying was based on reaching a certain JLPT level
that helps a lot
definitely the best way to get better is to live here, though

The JLPT prep materials help to focus your study

i don't think I want to do JLPT
I just want to be able to converse with my Japanese friends :)

I don't think the JLPT material itself is particularly good, but any focus is better than none...

ssb
even if you don't want to do JLPT they prorivde an awesome structure

and continue my interest for Japan and Japanese! Maybe one day I'll do JLPT

ssb
6:53 AM
they say "this is what you should know at this level"
it's a great 'trunk' before you branch out into your interests

hmm maybe I will!

ssb
don't worry about the tests if you don't want, but picking up a Jlpt vocabulary or grammar book, for example, never hurts

I'll get anki now
What do you guys think of AJATT?

ssb
i don't know much about his methods or anything and i don't read his site
i don't remember what he promised, something along the lines of being fluent in a year and a half?
but yeah, that's really unlikely.

not the project specifically but the idea of immersion
i immersed myself in japanese for a while and as a result i believe my reading ability greatly increased
my friend - who studies japanese - said i can read faster than her + all her classmates

ssb
6:58 AM
well, not to sound rude or anything, but if your level of reading comprehension is "some" kanji then that distinction probably doesn't mean too much
my personal opinion on the matter is that the approach you should take depends on what your goals are
like you, i wanted to improve reading
so i focused on that a LOT, and I learned as many words as I could and as many kanji as I could
and it worked great, I can read just about anything that your average Japanese person can read

by reading speed i mean of hiragana and katakana

ssb
however the price of that is I'm a little weaker in some areas of speaking, and I WAS really weak at listening

it's almost the pace of my english

ssb
it's good that you've got hiragana and katakana down, of course
but that's just the tip of the iceberg

oh most definitely
kanji is so daunting, writing is so daunting and both speaking/listening are a hard task

ssb
7:01 AM
the hard part is going to be seeing all of the kanji enough to get used to them and be able to pick those up at an acceptable pace
that's what I used anki for
studying vocab/kanji every day
the most important piece of advice I can give you is to study every day
even if it's just 10 minutes
study a little bit every day

i think that's what i'll do

ssb
don't fall behind

i'll try!

ssb
of course this is all what worked for me
your mileage may vary

i'd like to think i'm a relatively quick learner
or maybe i just think i am

ssb
7:03 AM
that's good, and it will certainly help

i stopped learning japanese before i learnt katakana

ssb
but the unfortunate part about Japanese is that there's a huge mountain of stuff you just have to memorize

so i had to learn that myself, i picked it up in a week or so

ssb
and you have to review or else you WILL forget it. that's where anki comes in.

any decks you recommend?

ssb
7:10 AM
i'm not sure what's good anymore. I started like 5 years ago and used a deck of ~8000 JLPT words. Once I finished that I just kept adding words on my own
pick one that looks good and go for it

sounds good

7:21 AM
9人!

What is つたい?

sometimes

へ~~~

ssb
7:50 AM
i don't know how widespread that is though

ssb
let it be your motivation to study
do you have rikaichan installed?
or rikaikun on chrome

In German,
I think it's
Tokio ist gemein.

Why German?

8:13 AM
www
Just because I'm learning it

Oh!
がんばれ!

Danke! ^^

Damnit! xD
I forgot the Japanese word!
Hmm...

Oh, "Danke"?

I think - どういたしまして!

8:15 AM
Oh I see

Is that right?

Yay!
be back soon

but some people say we don't use どういたしまして in daily conversation

In the world of Japanese as a foreign language, yes.

8:16 AM
what instead?

Do we? @TokyoNagoya

not in Japan

ssb
i'd just say いいえ

I've never said どういたしまして in my whole life except n English classes where I had to translate "Thank you."
I mean "You are welcome"

8:18 AM
edit 機能が使えますよ

ssb
just like how I don't think in English we actually say "you're welcome" very much

You don't?

ssb
maybe we say "you're welcome" more often than you say "どういたしまして"

ほう・・

ssb
but i feel like the more common response is like "sure" or "no problem" or "don't mention it" or
there are many choices

8:20 AM
へ~~

ssb
and "you're welcome" is just one amongst many

メモしておこう・・・
で、
@TokyoNagoya username?

ほんまに知らんかった?

なんとなくなら・・・ww
いつも忘れますからね

"Sure"で十分だよ。 "You're welcome."は長すぎる。

8:23 AM
Sureって・・・
そうなんだぁ
じゃあ、usernameはsureで

なんでやねん!

短いし

Isn't なんでやねん Osaka dialect?

ssb
yes indeed

8:28 AM

I remember my host family saying it

ssb

what does it mean?

@TokyoNagoya How would you translate なんでやねん!in 英語?

ssb

8:30 AM

SSBが答えたやん

だね~

I think a lot of this conversation is not basic Japanese

Tokyoさん遅いもん~

8:34 AM
As in, plain old Japanese

ssb
they like to use dialects a lot

@Shazer2 Yeah, that's why I said,
Tokio ist gemein!

It's so confusing :(
Oh, because of the different dialect?
I thought he was genuinely being mean.

It ain't fun talking standard, ya know?

ssb
8:35 AM
some of us don't talk so good

But it's hard for people like me!

I suppose

ssb
think of it as a learning opportunity

how?

ごめんね~あとで、殺しとくから・・

8:36 AM
I can't read it!

ssb
eh who are you going to kill

Of course..

なんで殺されなあかんねん!

ふふふ

ssb
this is escalating so quickly

8:37 AM
Learn あかん. It is useful.

Is that irony or

He's trying to teach you kansai dialect
because he's a kansai comedy fan

rikaikun says あかん means useful :P

ssb
with just a few key phrases you too can be a manzai champion

useless*

ssb
8:38 AM
もうあかんやん・・

ssb
i don't know much kansai ben
もうかりまっか

I am stll learning it myself. I have lived half my life in Nagoya and the other half in Tokyo, but Kansai speech appeals to me the most.

How do you feel about ainu? (language, not people :P)

I don't know ainu language...

Tokyo was just a big plain with barbarians only until a couple of hundred years ago. Western Japan had always ruled.

ssb
8:45 AM
ainu are barbarians?

No, I meant the present day Kanto area

OMG
I love Japan

Japan just wants to be friends.

ssb
i don't mean that in a scary kind of way

@404NotFound I do

ssb

@404NotFound well I guess it depends what you need

Time for dinner. See you guys.

@TokyoNagoya 腹八分目にね

ssb
腹崩壊まで

@ssb あかんwwww

ssb
8:50 AM
腹爆

@404NotFound delete completely deletes it
@404NotFound just uninstalls so it isn't loaded but it's still there
@404NotFound do you have a blog? can I see?

i don't have blog i am learning wordpress now ...

Good work :)

i have created my own plugin and now i am trying to uninstall it
but i am totally confused from where i can uninstall?

ssb
this may seem obvious but

9:03 AM
yup
in my plugin i have uninstall.php... when it will get call?

ssb
why not just run it manually?

@ssb what is diff btwn deactive and uninstall?

ssb
i don't know, but i assume that one just disables the functionality temporarily while uninstall removes the plugin completely
why don't you try it and see

9:56 AM
@ssb They shave!

10:19 AM
Well... this is interesting... they didn't get forced into the "Italian Language and Usage" name format

ssb
