Hey guys, my Chavrusa is looking for a topic to give a short Shi'ur on at his son's bris. Any ideas from the parashah? He prefers something "meaty", ie, Halachic.

2:33 AM
(Maybe not ie, maybe more eg.) Point is, he wants something more than a cute vort.
@hodofhod @double aa, you guys seem to be into deep textual analysis beyond a quick vort. Thoughts? @Isaac Moses, anything in R' Hirsch? Anyone else I'm neglecting (no offense)?
Just looking for topics at the moment. He can research on his own. Unless you've got something ready made that he can work with.

@SethJ I think it has more to do with wine and bread than it has to do with food in general

1 hour later…
3:52 AM
@SethJ Mazal Tov! Flipped through R' Hirsch, and I see that he has extensive commentary on the part about the duties of the Leviyim, starting in 18:1, including analysis of both the pesukim and the relevant midrash halacha.

8:19 AM
@SethJ I didn't get pinged on this, oddly. I'd probably ditch 'priorities' as most meta-y.
@CharlesKoppelman I agree. Ping @SethJ.
@SethJ M'tzitza bape? :-) (Not from the parasha, just a topic on which one can say something beyond a cute vort.)
@SethJ Aren't z'roa, l'chayayim, and keva in this week's parasha? Anything about dedicating part of an animal that represents our strength? (z'roa), our ?? (l.), and our ?? (k.) to God, comparing to mila.... I don't know. And not halachic.

5 hours later…
1:55 PM
@SethJ He could investigate whose obligation it is (father on behalf of son or older son on behalf of father or some shlichut thing etc.). He could use it as a springboard to discuss mitzvot aseh shehazeman grama viz-a-viz Tosfot Kiddushin 29 and a Raavad somewhere about when Kareit applies to an 'Arel. If he is a kohein he can find plenty of mitzvot related to him in this weeks parsha, including pidyon haben if that is upcoming.
He could look at the discussion of Hiddur Mitzva in connection with Tzitzin haMe'akevin.
Various issues surrounding Milah on Shabbat. (when it is doche, what can and can't you do, muktza issues)

Q: Tag link does not provide complete list of questions with that tag

Monica CellioI was looking for this question, which I speculated was tagged parshat-shelach. I clicked that tag from another question and didn't find my question. So I searched for my question, confirmed the tag, and then clicked on that tag from that question -- and got a results page with four questions, ...

@DoubleAA I don't remember the title to judaism.stackexchange.com/helpcenter/whats-mi-yodeya from the old /faq; was it there?

@msh210 I don't think there was one. You can probably ask a dev if you want.

@DoubleAA The title is fine; I can't think of a better one. I'm just wondering where it came from.
Oh, no. What happens to all our /faq#section links?

@msh210 I know :(
You should post on MSO

Q: Replace [faq] magiclink with [help]

TronicZomBWith the new addition of the help center, the FAQ is now a part of the help center and the link up top has even been replaced with "help" instead of "faq". Q: Incorrect link for FAQ on deleted answer

ElazarWhen an answer is deleted, it says "Why was your post deleted? See the faq." with a link http://stackoverflow.com/faq#deletion Which points to this FAQ page: http://stackoverflow.com/helpcenter/deleted-questions Of course, the link should be to this page: http://stackoverflow.com/...

@DoubleAA Oh, it works! yodeya.com/faq#bounty :-)
(That's the only one I tried. I'm guessing the others work also.)

@DoubleAA nice -- I hadn't realized that had been rolled out to all sites yet.
@msh210 oh, whew.

3:56 PM
@MonicaCellio Well... yes and no. The old /faq#bounty was advice on getting answers -- it included IIRC advice that one edit a question to be better worded, or something. The current page redirceted to is only about bounties.

@msh210 oh, ok. So, still some work to do; any old faq#something link should land you somewhere relevant now, and if that means there need to be some extra sections or massaged text, that should happen. I haven't followed this very closely on MSO but I know there's activity there, so with luck it'll all get sorted out.

@DoubleAA Nice! It's about time.

Q: /faq#bounty misredirecting

msh210The old /faq#bounty section discussed how to improve a question and post a bounty, in order to get answers. Its content was essentially the same as the current content of http://judaism.stackexchange.com/helpcenter/no-one-answers. But /faq#bounty now redirects to http://judaism.stackexchange.com/...

@msh210 It looks like they made a nice effort to give prominent billing to important custom text in original faqs. See also:

@IsaacMoses Oh, well done.

4:03 PM
... actually, I seem to have lucked out by checking Physics I've looked at a bunch of others and have yet to find another (besides us) with a custom entry in that top spot. In any event, I agree that the way they phrased and placed it for us is good.
@Shog9 or whoever made that design decision, thanks!
This doesn't help with old links, but all the different pages have nice URLs of the form /helpcenter/intuitive-brief-title

I hadn't thought to check this before, but new users now get a snazzy topbar intro instead of the old sidebar, so we no longer have the red disclaimer referenced here:

Robert CartainoNote — The CYLOR Disclaimer now appears in the right column so all new users will see the this diplayed. Q: Help Center doesn't play well with text zoom

Monica CellioThe spiffy new Help Center presents an attractive, easy-to-use layout, but the page doesn't adapt to text zoom as well as the rest of the site does. This is the page with three levels of zoom (my usual for reading Mi Yodeya): (Firefox 18.0.1, Windows XP.) The overlapping text (and button) in...

A: Baby born bein hashmoshos -- when to make pidyon haben?

Seth JWhen we have a doubt regarding a biblical command, we take a stringent approach. This is known as ספק דאורייתא לחומרה. When we are obligated to do something at a set time, and especially when that time is dependent on another phenomenon or event, it is imperative that we know when the appropriat...

Looking for input: I'm inclined to edit this question to alter the link, so it's not to that specific page but to the site in general. This feels too self-promotion-y to me. Thoughts?

6:17 PM
@MonicaCellio First of all, as-is, the question looks very much like an appeal that is poorly concealed in a question wrapper, so I think it needs to be changed somehow.
@MonicaCellio In fact, given that and the fact that the question lacks a clear, valid motivation (Why would anyone suspect otherwise?), I'd recommend treating the question in total as spam and possibly just deleting it.

Q: Fluent in Portuguese? Apply to be a Community Manager!

JaydlesWe mentioned this in Shog9's blog post officially welcoming Tim Post as a full time CM, but we wanted to get the word out: We're looking for Community Manager candidates who are fluent in Portuguese. That sound like you? Apply here today. Some folks inquired as to why we need this. We've long...

@IsaacMoses I revised it before seeing your second comment. Thoughts on the current version? (Still a weak question and I'll comment about that if it stays.)

@MonicaCellio Given what I know about the question's history, the revision seems forced. Does the motivation you inserted seem like an interesting and on-topic one to you? I don't mean that rhetorically; since it didn't come from OP, if it's not deemed worthwhile by someone, it's not worth keeping.

@IsaacMoses I wasn' trying to add motivation (since I don't know). The original link, to his specific appeal, included incentives at various price points, so, in removing his link, I thought I should add that characteristic of these sites into the question. But I think I'm working too hard to save a bad question, and that your diagnosis as spam was correct. Thanks for the help.

6:47 PM
@MonicaCellio hi, how are you Monica? (my mom wanted that my name was Monica (: )

@Charlie presumably this was before she knew there'd be a brit milah. :-)
Or, at least, I'm assuming you're male, but I could be being US-centric and if I've erred I apologize.

@MonicaCellio haha nono :) no brit milah :) She knew I would be a girl
@MonicaCellio no problem, don't worry:)

@Charlie oh! I'm sorry; I was jumping to conclusions there. You must get that a lot. :-( (My husband, Dani, gets it in reverse; a few weeks ago he got junk mail about pregnancy-related products!)

@MonicaCellio ohh! I like this name, though it's not my real name :)

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob You can search that very easily mechon-mamre.org/b/l/l11.htm

7:04 PM
@Charlie well, that probably cuts down on the misdirected junk mail, at least. :-)

@MonicaCellio one of the v reasons I use this name, Charlie, is this

@DoubleAA didnt work out. i wonder why i think its barochoth.

@Charlie ugh. I'm sorry. Did the problem continue after you posted that?

@IsaacMoses yes, it's unacceptable :-/

thoughts?
also i love this show too bad none are made anymore ;(

@IsaacMoses Boo, hiss.

@Charlie I'm glad to hear that. And thanks for the pointer to that post; some interesting comments there. I've pretty much always used my real name online, so sometimes there've been unwelcome "ooh, a girl! (gawk, drool, make inappropriate comments)" stuff but I guess I mostly hang out in corners of the internet that don't run to that. For which I'm grateful.

@MonicaCellio yes, people here are very nice :) I like.it!

7:38 PM
It's loaded with problems.

@SethJ yea the show disproves him

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob It doesn't take much.

@Charlie Oh, good, another female MY user. We seem to have too few (although perhaps it's an illusion and we have many, much as I thought you were male).

@msh210 I believe that @DoubleAA has claimed, from time to time, to be female. Or canine.

@IsaacMoses And I'm asinine, myself.

7:51 PM
@msh210 Wow. We have a greater diversity of species here than I thought.

@IsaacMoses On the Internet, nobody knows you're a donkey.

@msh210 ... but everyone so assumes
... which, it turns out, is both self-fulfilling and self-applying

8:45 PM
@msh210 For some reason, I thought you were female for the first few months I used this site. No idea why
On an unrelated note, who is @Caleb and why is he always hanging out here?

@Daniel I'm a mod over on Christianity and Biblical Hermeneutics. We sometimes get cross over users in chat that I keep an eye on and I have some interest both the subject matter here and how the site is handled in general, so I have the room favorited. I'm actually not in here very much unless there is something up.

@Caleb Got it. Well nice to meet you :)

@Daniel @msh210 @MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses while we're on the subject, does anyone happen to know Nikmasi's gender? I get a lot of indications towards female, but one or two towards male. Has the user positively identified one way or another on-site that I may have missed?
Incidentally, I presume (not assume) everyone here is human unless they have, or a superuser/mod has indicated otherwise.

@SethJ I have also for some reason assumed that Nikmasi is female, but not for any logical reason that I can think of (maybe just the pink gravatar)

9:02 PM
@SethJ My impression is that nikmasi has been very careful not to leak any personal information here.

@Daniel Says the person with the pink gravatar and male moniker?

@Caleb :D

@Caleb Good point :)

unpublished archeological evidence of the menorahs shape :)
most likely published by now though

@Caleb It's not really a logical reason to assume something, it just affects the visual representation in my head

9:07 PM
@SethJ I don't have a strong impression of nikmasi either way and can't remember any indicators.

@IsaacMoses Yeah, I've felt the same. But I wasn't sure if I had missed any deliberate giveaways.

@SethJ Why were you wondering?

@MonicaCellio Well, one indicator is the emphasis on women's issues and writing style indicating a woman's perspective. However, on the flip side, I've caught some mentions in comments of interactions with and studying under prominent rabbis. Neither of which proves either option, of course.
@Daniel ^^^
@Daniel sheer curiosity. Since the subject came up I thought I'd ask if anyone had any insight. It sometimes serves the answerer of a question about Jewish life and learning to know if the asker is male or female, though it's not strictly necessary.

@SethJ Absent an indication in the question, it's probably best to make no assumptions when answering, even if the asker has made an explicit ascription at some point in the past.

@IsaacMoses Well, there have been so few women on MY, and most have been forthright about it. I occasionally address the asker or speak on/in their terms. If it's a women's issue I tend to say "they", and if it's a men's issue I tend to say "we". But I might occasionally say "you" if appropriate. That sort of thing.

9:31 PM
@Daniel I had that with @Hod.

@DoubleAA When? All I remember is this convo

@HodofHod How did you find that chat message so fast?

@Daniel chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=female&room=468 5th message has my name (highlighted for me) which I remember from that conversation.

@msh210 :)

@HodofHod I guess you have a good memory!

9:41 PM
@Daniel hi, Daniel, how are you doing?

@SethJ I'm fairly confident s/he has not confirmed their gender in public.

@Charlie I'm well
how are you?

@Daniel I'm quite good, thanks

@HodofHod Can't find it. You'll have to trust me :)

@DoubleAA did you watch the video i linked?

9:46 PM
@HodofHod @msh210 Any progress towards this yet?
Feb 14 '12 at 19:38, by Shmuel Brill
@HodofHod did you get a Ksav Rabbanus from J.SE?

@SethJ Yeah, but they revoked it when we graduated. They sent masked men to my house to tear it up....

@HodofHod Boo. I've heard rumors of SE thugs, but I didn't believe it. Everyone usually seems so nice!

@SethJ Why do you think all the employees that leave never hang around afterward? When was the last time you heard from Waffles, Aarthi, or Dori?

Hi @argon

@Charlie Hi

9:52 PM
@Argon :D

@HodofHod :D

@IsaacMoses Oh, I thought of him, but really, that's just a deeper part of this whole conspiracy....
@IsaacMoses In fact, I suspect he's the director of their covert ops, which was why he had to "leave" the company; so they could distance themselves from their nefarious handiwork.
Either that, or he really does have TIE Fighters and SE is too scared to go after him.
Toss up, really.

@HodofHod yeah, could be either. You didn't collect any hard evidence when he came to your house? (Or did he send minions to do that?)

@MonicaCellio I wasn't sure, as I said, they were masked. There were 3 of them, wielding katanas. No hard evidence, I'm afraid, they were too good for that. They also deleted all my saved convos from TL.

10:04 PM
@MonicaCellio Do you really think it would take tens of Jews to take @HodofHod down?

@IsaacMoses In my defense, I was in middle of Shemoneh Esrei. They knew exactly when to come.... it was creepy...
@MonicaCellio Speaking of which; would you mind doing a quick search for casperone in the office? There should be a drawing of him and me there somewhere (unless it's only in TL)

@HodofHod Would you like me to post the picture here?
I don't want to give away too many personal details about your appearance.

@DoubleAA Sure.

@DoubleAA I appreciate it. I don't think the pic gives away anything I haven't yet. (I hope not ;)
@IsaacMoses I... just got that. /facepalm.

10:20 PM
@HodofHod It seems your left arm is significantly longer than your right arm.
Are you a lefty?

@DoubleAA Could be a trick of the camera

@DoubleAA My family has a tradition that we're descended from Basya.
3

@DoubleAA Cool! :D

@HodofHod just a dumb pun

@IsaacMoses Definitely Photoshopped.
@IsaacMoses ..which I should have gotten. It took me like three takes.

10:22 PM
@HodofHod Oh, yeah. I can definitely see now that there are pixels.

@IsaacMoses Yeah, you can clearly see the reddish tinge it added to my beard...

Who can guess what casperOne is wearing?

nothing, he's a ghost
sorry

@DoubleAA Oooh! Oooh! Pick me!

@HodofHod Yes?
The best guess in TL was a goose.
...which apparently was planning on pecking all the gold dust of Hod's face.

11:08 PM
@DoubleAA Yankees cap.
I may have cheated by looking at the original picture. And by being there.
@DoubleAA Either that or we're standing in front of the Presidential seal

@HodofHod ooh, katanas -- and here I thought they were just going to make you answer some really hard exam questions. (Nice portrait! I see the family resemblence with Batya.)

11:29 PM
@hod I thought it was Bisya? And I'm sooo lost... I hate not getting inside jokes, especially puns. :(
