@ali adding barriers around the laws of the torah is different than adding new laws to the torah. Women wearing girdles are a minhagim, dipping I'm Mikwah is also — MoriDoweedhYaAgob 14 mins ago
That seems totally wrong to me
(The last point)
Am I just confused about what he's saying?

@Daniel if so, we can be confused together.

I can't imagine that RaMBaM says that women can go to the mikveh if they feel like it
I suppose it could be that he's talking about men going to the mikveh

@SethJ, thanks for your edits to this question. Where does this stand now? From the comments it sounds like the question may have evaporated in the clarification, but I don't know the subject. I see that smu doesn't have enough rep to chat yet. What do you think should happen? Is there still a question there?

@MonicaCellio I haven't thought there was a question there for some time.

2:33 PM
@SethJ seeing three close votes, I just added mine and closed it.

@MonicaCellio I also just removed my upvote. I think all of this requires explanation to smu ... but I'm kind of at a loss.

@smu, I'm sorry for all the thrashing on this. We've closed the question (closing is not necessarily permanent) so that, if you still have a question, it can be clarified. From your comments I'm not sure if you do still have a question. Do you? We'd like to help you get the answer you're looking for, and I think we're going to need to edit the question to make what you're looking for more clear. — Monica Cellio 13 secs ago

@Ali The standard procedure when asking a question should not be to go post it in chat immediately. You have been told that. If you want to discuss a certain aspect of a post in chat then you can include a link with your discussion. But there is no need to advertise. We all see the main page.

can some one explain what is the answer to the above question as I did not intend this question to belittle judaism. I was reading that article and found strange claims hence I thought there cant be a better place to verify it then here.
And I really cant understand what is wrong with the question

@Ali The biggest problem is that you don't really ask a question
see the conversation below

@Daniel WRT your question to Mori, I think he means for men.

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob
and on.

@SethJ I think he is referencing this line from the quoted article: "that women (and men, under some circumstances) should undergo a ritual bath (mikvah)"
which is talking about women

@SethJ It's cute that medieval governments thought they controlled their subjects' language before they provided state-run education (and even before widespread literacy!) but that's not how things were on the ground
Especially in the case of French! I think it was something like 80% of France did not speak Parisian French even in the late 18th c when Napoleon came to power
I'm not saying your interpretation of Tosafot is wrong. I'm just arguing linguistic history
If you want a list of some dialects of Old French, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_French#Dialects

@CharlesKoppelman You couldn't fix my typo while you were at it??
:P

@SethJ heh oops. I usually catch those

Jacob ben Meir, (1100, Ramerupt–9 June 1171 (4 tammuz), Troyes), best known as Rabbeinu Tam, was one of the most renowned French Tosafists, a leading halakhic authority in his generation, and a grandson of Rashi. Known as "Rabbeinu" (our teacher), he acquired the Hebrew suffix "Tam" meaning straightforward; it was originally used in the Book of Genesis to describe his biblical namesake, Jacob. Biography Jacob ben Meir was born in the French country village of Ramerupt, in the Aube département of northern-central France, to Meir ben Shmuel and Yocheved, daughter of Rashi. His primary t...

Hi, we are having a discussion on chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/8758/islam-and-judaism-dialogue nterested people can join us

@SethJ Was that Rabbeinu Tam? He had contact with Italian Jews, I know, but probably also parts of France. One thing that makes me open to the "Frenches" interpretation is that he talks about purity of the language. He was way too late to know anything about the purity of Latin.
and [Parisian] French today really cares about its purity.
...medinah there probably meant "region" or something like that, no? As in Ester... They didn't really have a concept of countries like we do.
Apologies - the development of [esp. European] language and states is something I've thought a lot about.

4:31 PM
@CharlesKoppelman (Check your Twitter messages.)
@CharlesKoppelman Medinah has a stricter meaning than "region". It means something more official. In Arabic and Aramaic it means a city. But most likely it means an autonomous government.

Is this "Too Localized"? — Isaac Moses 3 hours ago

@CharlesKoppelman That doesn't mean it is a division ala France vs. Italy. It could be a fortified French state with a duke or governor.

@SethJ got it. thanks

@CharlesKoppelman In any case, I don't really know what he means by "purity".
He could be knowledgeable about Latin or he could be snobby about French!

@AnnaLear, hi!

@msh210 hey :)

Ali
I have been suspended from this site ?

@AnnaLear hi and welcome!

thanks!

@AnnaLear Hi.
This may be a big deal:
Anyone have a question that can be formulated from it?

5:14 PM
@SethJ oh cool! I want to know about the scribal devices & decorations that are no longer used, but I'll bet the only people who can answer that aren't on this site...

@MonicaCellio Oh, I'll bet some of them are, at least occasionally.

@SethJ an answer would need to come from somebody who's seen the scroll or facsimiles/photos. Outside of Bologna U, are there such people?

5:47 PM
@MonicaCellio Dunno. We do have scribes, though, who may have seen it or heard expert testimony about it.

@SethJ that's a good point. And maybe there's evidence in the part that's visible in the photo there. Can't hurt to ask, I guess; at best I get an answer and at worst it hangs around for a while until someone who knows sees it.

7:12 PM
@SethJ thanks. I wonder why he made that change after I reopened, when I reopened because of the prior edit.

Is it possible that this is not all the votes to undelete I've made: judaism.stackexchange.com/users/603/… I think there were more, an I was looking for them

10:17 PM
@Menachem That link is not public
Only you and SE employees can see it
not even mods
Never fear: @AnnaLear is here!

10:41 PM
@DoubleAA Is there a public way to see all the undeletes I've voted for?

10:54 PM
@Menachem that should be all of them

@AnnaLear I'm almost positive I voted to undelete another one, but I can't find it now
@AnnaLear here it is: judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/7506/… -- I searched the chat and found it

hmm, you're right. almost 2 years ago, too.
Oh wait. It does show up in that list, but you probably can't see it because the post is still deleted.
I can see it, but I have fancy access. :)
Do you just see one undelete vote then?

@AnnaLear I only see one. It is an answer that I made, then deleted while I was restructuring, and then undeleted it once I'd completed the answer.
I thought it was supposed to show a list of all the undelete votes I made. Does it only show successful undelete votes?

No, it probably just hides deleted posts. I think we should just show any posts you can otherwise see (i.e. if you have over 10k reputation, you should be able to see deleted posts in that list). If you feel like it and/or care, can you write up a bug report on your meta? If not, no worries. :)

Q: Can't see undelete votes for deleted posts

MenachemSee discussion in chat starting here. I was looking for a list of the posts I'd voted to undelete, [replace my username with yours to see your list - http://judaism.stackexchange.com/users/603/menachem?tab=votes&sort=undelete ], but the list was incomplete.
