I suppose it could be that he's talking about men going to the mikveh

@SethJ It's cute that medieval governments thought they controlled their subjects' language before they provided state-run education (and even before widespread literacy!) but that's not how things were on the ground

Especially in the case of French! I think it was something like 80% of France did not speak Parisian French even in the late 18th c when Napoleon came to power

I'm not saying your interpretation of Tosafot is wrong. I'm just arguing linguistic history

@SethJ Was that Rabbeinu Tam? He had contact with Italian Jews, I know, but probably also parts of France. One thing that makes me open to the "Frenches" interpretation is that he talks about purity of the language. He was way too late to know anything about the purity of Latin.

...medinah there probably meant "region" or something like that, no? As in Ester... They didn't really have a concept of countries like we do.

Apologies - the development of [esp. European] language and states is something I've thought a lot about.

@CharlesKoppelman Medinah has a stricter meaning than "region". It means something more official. In Arabic and Aramaic it means a city. But most likely it means an autonomous government.

@AnnaLear I only see one. It is an answer that I made, then deleted while I was restructuring, and then undeleted it once I'd completed the answer.

I thought it was supposed to show a list of all the undelete votes I made. Does it only show successful undelete votes?

No, it probably just hides deleted posts. I think we should just show any posts you can otherwise see (i.e. if you have over 10k reputation, you should be able to see deleted posts in that list). If you feel like it and/or care, can you write up a bug report on your meta? If not, no worries. :)
