8:00 PM
@IsaacMoses That

Aha. Managed to log out in Safari. And I can still see the room. So I have no idea why @Ali can't.

Ali
@MonicaCellio I wanted to clarify this long standing misunderstanding , I am not doing DAWAH or proselytyzing. "Dawah literally MEANS direct invitation to Islam" If i say "Become a Muslim say the Shadah" then it is Dawah , , its like "Calling for Dinner". If one calls to dinner one would directly invite a person to dinner rather then saying "I have cooked a turkey, black cake " etc

@Ali It's not your definition of proselytism that matters in this context.
That's not a relevant consideration.

Ali
and proselytising would mean actively converting people to Islam
@TRiG Now i can see it back!

As I'm very fond of saying on Christianity SE, words have different meanings in different contexts. The fact that what you are doing is not proselytism as you understand the term is irrelevant. What matters is that it is proselytism as the regulars here understand the term.

8:07 PM
@Ali Nobody cares what you call it or what the strict (according to you) definition of Dawah is. Your behavior has not been appreciated.

@Ali I didn't say you're doing dawah, and I neither know nor care what that means. Any statement here of the form "Islam is superior" or "you should be a Muslim" or "you are a Muslim but don't know it yet" etc is proselytizing as far as we are concerned.
4

@MonicaCellio That last one. Yes.

Ali
Proselytism (pron.: /ˈprɒsɨlaɪtɨzəm/) is the act of attempting to convert people to another religion or opinion. The word proselytize is derived ultimately from the Greek language prefix προσ- (toward) and the verb ἔρχομαι (to come) in the form of προσήλυτος (a new comer).[1] Historically in the Koine Greek Septuagint and New Testament, the word proselyte denoted a gentile who was considering conversion to Judaism.

@Ali we have told you what not to do here. I don't care what other definitions you bring. We have been clear. Stop it or be booted.

@Ali No. Bo. Dy. Cares. what you call it. Your behavior has NOT been appreciated.

Ali
8:09 PM
I never said here "Islam is superior" or anything close to that. It was all skepticism

@DoubleAA yahadus? where? (just catching up here...)

Ali
Even the RamBam wrote a book "Guide to the perplexed" for his followers
and i consider myself to be perplexed

@DhoweedYaAgov a wife of Esav iirc

Ali
I KEEP on getting logged out??
from this room
is SE opensource?

8:15 PM
@Ali Bits of it are, but not the whole thing.

@Ali Hm, I always thought the <y> was a schwa.

Ali

@msh210 yevamos 24b for instance

@DoubleAA thanks.

Ali
8:23 PM
Ok
@TRiG thanks
@TRiG are you christian?

@Ali no he said He is atheist

@Ali No.

Ali
@TRiG But you love religion!'

'

Ali
@msh210 ~
I hope i am not prosyletizing to "religion" @TRiG

@IsaacMoses :-)

@msh210 I guess my mentioning that novel is apropos of earlier mentions today of Scifi novels, gaming, and transliteration. There's one more easy connection, but I'll skip it.

@Ali Did you come here to troll?
Because this chat was being very calm before you came here.

Ali
@MadaraUchiha No, I always wanted to talk with Jews

@IsaacMoses Of course, one could probably bring up any Stephenson novel in any conversation and find connections.

Ali
8:39 PM
@MadaraUchiha and understand judaism

@IsaacMoses You recommend him, I gather? I've never read him. My scifi reading has been limited (IIRC) to fantasy and Asimov.
Oh, and Fahrenheit 451.

Ali
Its a dream come true to have to talk to so many Jews

@msh210 Yes. You have to have a certain amount of zitzfleicsh (sp?) for some of his novels, but I enjoy them a great deal.

@Ali Try not to annoy so many of them in the process though, will you?
3

@Ali I've had dreams like this as well.

8:42 PM
... and I'm not the only Jew to have enjoyed thinking about Anathem in the context of Judaism.

Ali
@msh210 Like what?

@Ali Never mind. Not important.

Ali
@msh210 anyways are you a lady or a guy?

@Ali A guy. Can't you tell by my avatar? :-)

@msh210 I can knot tell, personally.
3

8:44 PM
@msh210 Nope

Ali
Actually you had helped me a lot
I always thought you were a lady from the grammar and n-grams you were using

@Ali What's an 'n-gram'?

@Ali Suggestion: If you want to understand Judaism, stop talking to Jews and start listening to them.
6

Ali
@msh210 sequence of N word

@Ali So you mean my style of writing?

Ali
8:46 PM
its a linguistic signature that would help us in determining the authorship

Q: Holocaust etymology question migration

Bruce JamesMy question on the origins of the term "Holocaust" was migrated to another board. That's fine, but why does migration have to close out a question from the Judaism board? It would seem to be appropriate in both places.

I guess I'm effeminate.
Anyway, gtg. Have a good timezone, y'all. Abyssinia.

What'd I miss?
@msh210 This bugs the heck out of me.

@SethJ I don't follow. What was @msh210's point?

8:56 PM
@DoubleAA I have no idea. But that apostrophe looks like a bit of dirt on my monitor.
@TRiG Can I star this again?

@SethJ You just induced me to. Good enough?

@IsaacMoses That is satisfactory. :)

@IsaacMoses and I starred it while catching up, before seeing this.

As have I.
@msh210 Ethiopia?

Lol, the three mods are also owners of the room? XD

9:09 PM
@MadaraUchiha why Lol? Isn' that the way it usually works?

@MonicaCellio Mods already have owner powers++, we don't need room ownership
I gave mine to the most active users in my room

@MadaraUchiha That's because the room was created by moving ~300 messages from here to there. The new room took the attributes of the source room.

@DoubleAA Ah, I see

@DoubleAA oh, I thought @MadaraUchiha was talking about Bam, not that room. I remember being added to the owners' list for Bam when I became a mod, and more recently when I became a mod pro-tem elsewhere. So I just assumed that rooms needed to have owners, for designation if not for powers, or something. Shrug

@MonicaCellio A room can be without an owner, the system will appoint the most active user automatically after some time.

9:17 PM
@MadaraUchiha thanks. Good to know.

Approve an edit, anyone?
Normally wouldn't ask, but I'm testing an apparent bug.

@HodofHod the one in the queue? Sure. Ready?

@MonicaCellio yeah

@HodofHod done. (Belatedly I wonder if you needed a non-mod?)

@MonicaCellio I think you need 20k
Anyway, this is a weird bug. Check out the excerpt here: judaism.stackexchange.com/tags?page=11&tab=popular
bottom row.

9:29 PM
@HodofHod ddm"d?

@IsaacMoses yes. Which, incidentally needs a better description. I'm working on one.

@HodofHod oh. I've been bitten by that. They do some parsing on the excerpt to try to avoid wasting valuable space on redundant verbiage. Your "is" got caught up in that. The pattern is trying to catch "The X tag is" and cut to the chase, but legitimate excerpts like yours get caught by it sometimes.

@MonicaCellio Silly developers thinking they can intuitively parse natural language

@MonicaCellio Ah. Well it was like that before I got there. Let's see if my revamped def will help....

@IsaacMoses indeed. :-)

@MonicaCellio It's a stupid rule (one of many).

back
@msh210 is that a medrash?
i live a block away from a place called pinters and they sell seforim outside for a buck a piece and inside its from 5-what ever number the guy feels the book is worth and then you bargain with him on it some more lol.

@MonicaCellio @TRiG Yeah, you'd think they'd at least try to do some matching with the tag name.

so i usually go there every other day to see what he has new. i just pikced up 5 seforim which would cost me bout 60-70bux for 5bux :P

@DhoweedYaAgov Aw, I wish I could Artscroll/Kehos books for those prices. :(

9:43 PM
you can
all the books i buy are usually english because i buy them for a friend who im trying to help with in yiddishkeit

By the way, is it just me or does it seem that every ir miklat question is going to be tagged with , , , and ?

all for a dollar
thats just english books he has tons of hebrew seforim of a dollar a piece as well, then inside same as english 5-to what ever you bargain him too

@DhoweedYaAgov Do you mind me asking where this is?

boro park

@HodofHod hmm, good point. What change would you recommend?

9:50 PM
do you know where boro park is?

@DhoweedYaAgov of course. Other side of the country right now, but I do get to Brooklyn every once in a while.

@HodofHod ahh lol. well stop by when your here, unless if im in yeshivah, then come there :P

@MonicaCellio I don't know. Maybe it's not even a problem. :-/

Q: FAQ says History is off-topic and on-topic

Bruce JamesThe FAQ seems to be contradictory. It says that "If you have a question about...history of Jewish law or of Jewish life...then you've come to the right place." But it also says, "On the other hand, questions unrelated to Jewish life and learning, even if they are about...Jews, Jewish history, a...
