Q: How to reach The Mishna Project

Seth JDoes anyone know how to reach the Weinberg brothers of the (defunct) Mishna Project? I have their first album (which I highly recommend, if you can find it), and I'd like to get in touch with them.

All: Please see the above and my comment thereon. What do you think?

@msh210 As stated in the comments, I neither agree nor disagree with you. I see both sides of the issue. I just thought it was worth a shot. If the community wants to close it, I'll just delete it.
I've been trying to figure out how to reach them for the longest time. Would you be more comfortable if I removed their name and referred only to the project as an institution?

@SethJ Well, if it's defunct, then there's no way to reach it....

Per the [FAQ](http://judaism.stackexchange.com/faq#close) :
•too localized
This question is unlikely to ever help any future visitors; it is only relevant to a small geographic area, a specific moment in time, or an extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable to the worldwide audience of the internet.

I'm not sure who else this question will help...

12:33 AM
@DoubleAA I don't think that's an issue. it will help anyone who seeks info on the Mishna project.

@msh210 You could say that about anything. That doesn't make it not an "extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable".

Not necessarily. If someone closed a yeshiva and someone wanted to know if their admired rebbi was still in chinuch, it could be a beneficial question

@SethJ Again: possible but still "narrow" IMHO. That is why I voted to close. Others may disagree and think it is more applicable or have a different line for how narrow is too narrow.

Then I'll just delete it. I just want to know if they are planning on picking it back up again or planning anything similar.

@msh210 Why didn't my link work above? Have they changed the way to do that in chat?
Hmm... it worked here though....

12:37 AM
@DoubleAA You posted a multi-line post.
@SethJ Well, I won't close it, for now.

@msh210 Links don't work in multi-line posts? Why not?

A: What questions should be closed with reason "too localized"?

Joel Spolsky"Too localized" should be used for very tiny geographic regions or vanishingly small periods of time. It is used when a question cannot possibly be answered because nobody participating in the site is likely to know the answer, and even if it were answered, nobody else would care. For me, the ca...

Beats me. Other stuff also doesn't.
Like **this**.
And *this*.

@msh hmmm

@msh210 so "too localized" is ruled out. Do you still think it's off-topic as compared to my example of the closed yeshiva?

@SethJ Yes, but not enough to close it as a mod. I will willingly be the fifth vote, though, if there are four others.

12:47 AM
OI would've asked if they were planning on restarting the project, but I figured I would've gotten suggestions to contact them and ask them, so I figured I'd cut to the chase.

@SethJ Never too late to edit if you want.

Ok. I don't care much either way. Just thought it couldn't hurt to try. Nobody seems to know the answer anyway.
Ok, @double aa but I thought my suggested edit didn't meet with approval.

@SethJ ...yet. Someone may answer a year from now (if the question remains open).

@SethJ So far your question has not met with disapproval, because it's not closed till 5 people vote so.

If 5ppl vote to close I doubt I'm getting it reopened.

12:51 AM
IIRC Close votes expire after 2 days. A short term save may be all you need to get it flushed off the main screen where someone can eventually stumble across it while searching google.

@SethJ Maybe include both in the question?
@SethJ Do you mind if I edit?

I just did
Any better?
@msh210

@SethJ What do you think now? This also adds info about the MP into the question, which provides context, always good in a question.
@SethJ, of course, feel free to revert/seriously revise my edit!

@msh210 I tend to go with the flow. If this pleases the community, I'm fine with it. I've filled in the blank, FYI.

Well, we know that Vram's suspension is over... judaism.stackexchange.com/q/10262/759

1:03 AM
@SethJ I saw; thanks.

@DoubleAA I don't think they expire anymore

@HodofHod Did they used to? I remeber seeing that somewhere.

@DoubleAA They certainly used to, but I think it's changed

A: Why do close votes expire?

Mark TrappThe system has actually been reworked recently to take into account low-traffic beta sites: If the question has less than 100 views, the votes never expire If the question has more than 100 views, close votes expire at a rate of one every 4 days. But closing is supposed to be a (mostly) spont...

@msh210 btw, turns out that closing as "historical" only recently changed to remove the questions from the tag list. Last week actually, just in time to mess up our purim plans!

@HodofHod Mhm.
Well, have a good timezone, y'all.

Wow, there's a lot of people here. Should we retry our Parashat Hashavu'a Chat now? ;-)

1:14 AM
@HodofHod I'm down. Although I'll probably have to leave soon.

Thanks @Vram for re-accepting my answers to your questions, even if you did it just to get a round 300 for this bounty.

@jake Well, there's no reason not to. Parsha talk can happen any time!

@HodofHod I'm around to chat, although I don't have any questions off the top of my head to contribute.

@DoubleAA Neither do I, but I'm up for discussion

Ok, food for thought: At the end of p'kudei: "וַיְכַס הֶעָנָן אֶת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וּכְבוֹד יְהוָה מָלֵא אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן". 1. What is the ohel moed. Is it different from the mishkan? And (2) what is k'vod hashem, and is it related to the anan? Also wondering, what do chazal mean when they say "shechina"? Does anyone know any good sources that thoroughly explain this, preferably in a more rational, less mystical, fashion?

1:22 AM
okay, i'm extremely curious to hear how Shechina could be explained in a "rational" way.

Hello, @l urker

It seems Moshe named it Ohel Moed at a different point from the construction of the mishkan.

@jake I always thought that the rational (or at least not kabbalistic) explanation for Shechina is m'lashon "v'shachanti b'socham". That the Shechina is G-d's "presence" in this world, such as it is.

@DoubleAA In that case, why is this stuff happening to both the mishkan and the ohel moed at the same time? Are they somehow correlated?

@jake It could be once the mishkan was built, it took over the function of the ohel moed (although we should first try and define what that was).

1:30 AM
@HodofHod Yes. What I mean is that usually the rationalist position, like that of Rambam, is that God does not have a presence in this world, or at least in one place any more than another.

@HodofHod I would translate that root Sh.Kh.N more as to dwell than to present.
@jake FWIW i can't find the word shechina in tanach

@DoubleAA I think it's more of a chazal term.

@DoubleAA It is. I use presence since that's the more common term. Plus, it's a noun.

@HodofHod "Dwelling"? I think presance gives off a different impression than dwelling.
@l I'm pretty sure you are able to speak in chat now. Why do you still come hang around if you want to be done with the site?

@DoubleAA Dwelling is the locale, not the dweller. Presence is the only noun I can think of that fits
"Dwelling" can also be a form of verb, but again not the right use

1:37 AM
@HodofHod What makes you think Shechina is a gavra not a cheftza (for lack of better english terms)?
@HodofHod I meant the gerund not the participle.

@DoubleAA hmm, I don't know, feels wrong. At the same time, I agree that "presence" can give the wrong impression

@msh210 btw, turns out that closing as "historical" only recently changed to remove the questions from the tag list. Last week actually, just in time to mess up our purim plans!

@HodofHod "locking as". Interesting. Actually, it happened just in time so that we'd notice it at the time we were doing the locking and wouldn't have a nasty surprise whenever in the future we next looked at the tag

@IsaacMoses B"H
whoops! Yeah, "locking as".

Is that you starring, @l ?

I think you guys are overlooking the simplest reading of the Pasuk, which is poetic prose.
That is, the two are used nearly interchangeably.

@SethJ Which pasuk might you be referring to?

ויכס הענן...

2:48 AM
@SethJ here
@SethJ You are suggesting that Ohel Moed and Mishkan are synonyms.

In the Pasuk, yes.

Q: Volunteer needed: Host Parashat Hashavua' Chat

Isaac MosesUntil recently, I usually served as unofficial host for the Parashat Hashavua' Chat. Unfortunately, it seems that for the foreseeable future, I won't be able to attend. Would you be willing to take over this job, to help keep the Chat running smoothly? No one's going to be able to do it every si...

^^ New and improved.

@SethJ Based on the pasuk I quoted here that is not likely unless you think the mishkan was buit before Cheit HaEgel.

Chat on mobile is hit or miss, just saying.

@SethJ I agree the two functions may have merged at some point (see my comments here), but at least fundamentally they are different concepts.

2:53 AM
As I said, in the Pasuk they are being used interchangeably.
I don't think your Pasuk disproves that.
In fact,I think it strengthens my view.

@SethJ It could be, but if we understand the different concepts and functions they represent then we may better understand why each of those two ideas was paired with its corresponding phrase.

It gives context to what exactly the Ohel is for and why Kevod HaShem would fill it.
Sorry, reverse that.

@SethJ What I meant by merge here was that one structure served both functions, not that the functions became the same.

But in any case, I think it's poetic prose.
Ok, so they merged but have different functions. Now what?

@SethJ It is no doubt poetic. The question is analyzing the particular word choice (diction, syntax etc.) involved.
@SethJ I don't know. Maybe something like (SPECULATION): the ohel moed represents God's communication with the Jews while the mishkan represents God's presence in the jewish camp. So it fits that kavod (the amorphous concept) is with mishkan and anan (the "instantiation" of God lehavdil) is with ohel.

2:59 AM
Ok, I interpreted the answers as glossing over the poetry and trying to understand them separately. I think they are not really separate in this context.
Ok.

I just made that up. maybe the meanings are reversed. i'm just demonstrating the kind of thing i'm looking for.

Gotcha.

People spend years making diyukim in Shakespear's poetry, for the Torah al achat kamah vechamah!

Of course.

Q: Markdown in chat fails for multi-line messages

sbiWe've come to rename Markdown to Letdown in the C++ chat room because it lets you down so often. I've now just found a pattern. It seems markdown fails for multi-line messages. That is, this Letdown can't cope with multi-line comments. Let's see code? fails to display code marked as co...
