Q: Is the Karite sect and their religion on topic?

user6591It seems there are questions that pop up here and there concerning Karites and their religion. Are they on topic here at Mi Yodea, a site dedicated to traditional Judaism? Should we include all splinter groups that Chazzal called Minim such as Christianity?

I'm thinking of approving it bc the linking to something with the original Hebrew is sorta objectively better. But if the OP had used mechon mamre's hebrew/english I think I'd tend to reject the edit. We can't have every user editing all the links to their favorite version of Tanakh online (like how we don't edit transliteration). In fact, maybe I should reject this and edit in the relevant mechon mamre hebrew/english link.

@DoubleAA I agree with your concern about overriding OPs' style. In this case, the new link provides the exact same relevant content as the old link - the same exact translated text, and adds relevant value - original Hebrew text and a direct link to the particular verse. So, I think that it's totally zachin le-adam shelo befanav and therefore a valid edit, and not worth someone second-guessing to the point of digging up the corresponding MM link. ...

... If there was anything that MM provides that Sefaria doesn't, which was clearly relevant to the post or which OP had referred to, e.g. a different translation, I'd be more leery of allowing someone else to override it.

@IsaacMoses @DoubleAA I agree with Isaac. If the new link provides a superset of the material provided by the old one, I'm all for it. If the new link changes something in the Hebrew or English, then I'd be concerned about the author's intent -- at the very least, one would have to review the post and make sure nothing in it depends on, say, that exact language in the first link's translation.
@DoubleAA I think editors are comment-pingable, but their names don't auto-complete.
Also, a discussion on meta would reach more people.
Also, cool! I tend to use MM links (or Chabad if I want the Rashi) because @HodofHod made that easy. I never noticed that Sefaria has this interface. If it becomes easy I'll probably use that.

Thanksgiving (Thursday) through Sunday sales were down ~10% this year over last.

@msh210 Generally, when the press quotes people trying to explain the causes of economic indicators, the explanations are more a matter of impression than of science and wouldn't stand up to a great deal of careful scrutiny.
... and year-over-year comparisons are often lazy to the point of being grossly misleading. I've seen headlines recently screaming about the huge increase in murders in NYC in 2015 compared to 2014 and affixing blame for it, where the increase is about 5%, or on the order of tens of murders, which is tiny in the scheme of things and probably impossible to ascribe, statistically, to any particular cause. </rant>

@IsaacMoses For sure. (Fwiw, this was a press release quoting the head of the press-releasing company, so what you said may be true to a slightly lesser degree.)
@IsaacMoses YoY or similar comparisons have their place. Yes, a big picture is more useful. But sometimes there is no big picture and YoY is an interesting comparison. For example: For a company founded within the past year, the number of customers this month versus previous may be a useful indicator of health.
