In January our community-promotion ads will reset. That would be a great time to update the one for our publications to reflect the addition of "Days of Awe - Mi Yodeya?", if anybody is feeling graphically or photographically minded.

Q: Is the Karite sect and their religion on topic?

user6591It seems there are questions that pop up here and there concerning Karites and their religion. Are they on topic here at Mi Yodea, a site dedicated to traditional Judaism? Should we include all splinter groups that Chazzal called Minim such as Christianity?

Soliciting opinions about what to do with this suggested edit judaism.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/21448 @IsaacMoses @MonicaCellio etc.
I'm thinking of approving it bc the linking to something with the original Hebrew is sorta objectively better. But if the OP had used mechon mamre's hebrew/english I think I'd tend to reject the edit. We can't have every user editing all the links to their favorite version of Tanakh online (like how we don't edit transliteration). In fact, maybe I should reject this and edit in the relevant mechon mamre hebrew/english link.

@DoubleAA I agree with your concern about overriding OPs' style. In this case, the new link provides the exact same relevant content as the old link - the same exact translated text, and adds relevant value - original Hebrew text and a direct link to the particular verse. So, I think that it's totally zachin le-adam shelo befanav and therefore a valid edit, and not worth someone second-guessing to the point of digging up the corresponding MM link. ...

@IsaacMoses Thanks to @HodofHod, digging that up is a fairly simple task :)

... If there was anything that MM provides that Sefaria doesn't, which was clearly relevant to the post or which OP had referred to, e.g. a different translation, I'd be more leery of allowing someone else to override it.
@DoubleAA It's still an unnecessary kum va'aseh.
First google hit for zachin leadam: judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/50435/…

@IsaacMoses Not that it's relevant to this verse, but in terms of Hebrew text Sefaria uses straight leningrad whereas mm uses a more breuer-eque mix. Ex mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0130.htm#37 sefaria.org/Genesis.30.37 ערמון

@DoubleAA ? Translated in both as "plane-tree"

Platanus /ˈplætənəs/ is a genus comprising a small number of tree species native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are the sole living members of the family Platanaceae. All members of Platanus are tall, reaching 30–50 m (98–164 ft) in height. All except for P. kerrii are deciduous, and most are found in riparian or other wetland habitats in the wild, though proving drought-tolerant in cultivation. The hybrid London Plane has proved particularly tolerant of urban conditions. They are often known in English as planes or plane trees. Some North American species are called sycamores (especially Platanus...
@IsaacMoses Two verses later sefaria (following leningrad) doesn't have a large Zayin in Zikhru, while MM does.
@IsaacMoses IAE is there a way to communicate to the editor not to go about trying to change other people's stuff just Lesheim a standard?

4:03 PM
@IsaacMoses @DoubleAA I agree with Isaac. If the new link provides a superset of the material provided by the old one, I'm all for it. If the new link changes something in the Hebrew or English, then I'd be concerned about the author's intent -- at the very least, one would have to review the post and make sure nothing in it depends on, say, that exact language in the first link's translation.
@DoubleAA I think editors are comment-pingable, but their names don't auto-complete.
Also, a discussion on meta would reach more people.
Also, cool! I tend to use MM links (or Chabad if I want the Rashi) because @HodofHod made that easy. I never noticed that Sefaria has this interface. If it becomes easy I'll probably use that.

@HodofHod Any thoughts about including sefaria in your script? [t gen 1 1 s] Should be really really easy given how they make links sefaria.org/Genesis.1.1 just append the right number and word.

1 hour later…
"Later"? Well, I guess compared to last year (that was last year, right?), but um...no. (Placeholder for "and it's not 'Jewish Christmas'" rant.)

@MonicaCellio (From the POV of the retail sales profession in the US, it essentially is.)
@msh210 @MonicaCellio If he's strictly looking at year over year statistics, it's valid to only look at the civil date of Chanuka last year and this year.

@IsaacMoses if he just means "later than last year", then yeah, that makes sense. It's just funny in context -- last year did he talk about Chanukah being earlier than the previous year? (No, I don't care enough to actually research that...)

5:47 PM
@IsaacMoses It is. But especially with "that is anticipated to push sales into December", it sounds like he means objectively late. Maybe. I dunno, it just struck me as funny.

6:14 PM
@DoubleAA Replying for others to see: Yep, I can do that. I'll try to find time soon. (Of course, anyone is welcome to try their hand, if their skills lie in that direction)

6:36 PM
@msh210 Generally, when the press quotes people trying to explain the causes of economic indicators, the explanations are more a matter of impression than of science and wouldn't stand up to a great deal of careful scrutiny.
... and year-over-year comparisons are often lazy to the point of being grossly misleading. I've seen headlines recently screaming about the huge increase in murders in NYC in 2015 compared to 2014 and affixing blame for it, where the increase is about 5%, or on the order of tens of murders, which is tiny in the scheme of things and probably impossible to ascribe, statistically, to any particular cause. </rant>

7:29 PM
@IsaacMoses For sure. (Fwiw, this was a press release quoting the head of the press-releasing company, so what you said may be true to a slightly lesser degree.)
@IsaacMoses YoY or similar comparisons have their place. Yes, a big picture is more useful. But sometimes there is no big picture and YoY is an interesting comparison. For example: For a company founded within the past year, the number of customers this month versus previous may be a useful indicator of health.

@msh210 Sure.
