@DoubleAA @msh210 @MonicaCellio why was this reopened?

@YeZ we received a request to do so (from someone who wants to answer), we're willing to selectively re-open old PT questions if asked, and this one was three years old so it's been out of circulation for a while.

YeZ
@MonicaCellio I knew that, but I didn't see any new answer. I guess it wasn't so long ago.

@YeZ I think I only reopened it an hour or so ago. It's possible the person who asked hasn't seen the activity yet.

YeZ
@DoubleAA Don't worry, I've got my schedule planned out. Although I won't make the mistake I made last year and post a PTIJ question on motzei Purim, not realizing that we close them the next day.

5:05 AM
I propose that all PTIJ questions have PTIJ: or Purim Torah: at the head of their title to make it clearer on the home page what they are. — Double AA ♦ Mar 3 '14 at 22:38

@DoubleAA Oddly, I first read that as "catsup".

6:08 AM
Where did we get all this new activity from?

It sounds from that page like (1) this is a tradition of Jews not of Judaism and (2) you'll get more info when the DVD comes out. Because of (1), this seems to be off-topic. — msh210 ♦ 16 secs ago
@ShmuelBrin Hm?

6:38 AM
@DoubleAA Not IMO: the homepage shows the tag.

6:48 AM
What am I missing? This question seems very clearly off-topic, yet it has no closure votes and the comment "Why wouldn't it be [on-topic]?" has two upvotes. How is it on-topic?

Can anyone help me? I seem to think there's a halacha barring eating a(n otherwise kosher) animal that was fed exclusively non-kosher fodder. Google isn't helping me. Does anyone know where it is? (Or did I make it up?)

@YeZ @MonicaCellio I flagged it. I have a sketch of another answer in my head, but it may take me time to gather the necessary sources. Anyone else who wants to provide sources for masks is welcome to do so.

For future reference, is it alright to post Purim Torah questions early, with the understanding that they will be closed until Adar?
0
A: Mitzvah of eating sheep for Parshat Yitro

Noach mi FrankfurtThis is related etymologically by R' Hirsch: The giving of the Torah is referred to as מטן תורה, mutton torah. As such, it is proper to consume mutton on the Shabbat of Parshat Yitro. It is also permitted to do so on Shavuot, however it is customary instead to eat sheep's cheese, as we do not eat...

This one is based on a joke I made a few weeks ago. It would have been easier to post it early and get it put on hold until Adar.

@NoachmiFrankfurt The answer is funny, but the question seems a little too forced.

@NBZ In accordance with a famous ruling of R' Moshe Feinstein, you may follow your differing minhag around here, but only silently. So, you may post your Purim Torah in Adar I and delete it before anyone else reads it, then undelete in Adar II. — Isaac Moses Jan 29 '14 at 20:18
... not exactly the same, but the tactic I propose is available.
... but otherwise, the policy says "Purim Torah questions may only be posted [time limit] ... ," which means that it's asur lechatchila to post them any other time.
It wouldn't be good to have a free-for-all the rest of the year with the understanding that stuff would just get closed.

Q: What does Mr Bean have to do with Adar?

YehudaWe all know the famous Gemara: משנכנס אדר מר בין בשמחה Or to summarize it in a picture (if this is allowed on Mi Yodea): What connection has Mr Bean with Adar and Simcha? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah policy.

Q: What does Judaism think of math?

CnsersmoitIs it permissible according to halacha to do math? If so, are all kinds of math OK? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah policy.

@IsaacMoses No, but i didn't even see that mine made it.

@DoubleAA Thanks!
@Scimonster ... this year.

@msh210 כמובן

Incidentally, does anyone know what the document is called that a mortuary gives out at a funeral, listing information about the deceased and some other information (maybe a list of speakers or the text of prayers recited atthe funeral or the address of the shiva house), please?

4:02 PM
@msh210 Program?

@IsaacMoses That's good in context. What if I need to specify that it's from the mortuary, from the funeral? "Funeral program"?

@msh210 I don't know if there's a more-specific term of art, but that phrase certainly evokes the page you're talking about in my mind

@Scimonster I have no doubts that msh210 will get his badge before the season is over, then. :-)

@IsaacMoses Hm, okay, thanks. A student was out for a test and claims he was at a funeral. I'm e-mailing him and wish to give an example of the kind of documentation I'll accept for the excuse.

@MonicaCellio We're already at 92. It wouldn't even surprise me if it came on Shabbat.

4:06 PM
@Scimonster I hope no one posts the 100th ptij post on Shabas.

@NoachmiFrankfurt in addition to what @Isaac said, remember that new questions automatically hit the front page even if they're closed. I think that would be confusing to visitors. Best to just hold your PT questions until the right time.

@msh210 Timezones, man, timezones.

@msh210 @Scimonster clearly meant on Shabbat for him, which is not yet Shabbat for you
@Scimonster jinx

@Scimonster yes, the opening volley last night was quite heavy. People, please do remember to ask other questions too. :-)
@msh210 in the poster's timezone, anyway.

I knew that. (No, actually, I thought you meant that badges' being awarded are delayed from when they're deserved.)

4:08 PM
@MonicaCellio But now that i have PTIJ questions for today that are doomed to be closed, asking a regular question today won't count towards a second Socratic!

@MonicaCellio <petulantly>But these are so much fun!</petulantly>

@msh210 Yes, i was actually referring to the fact that the badge script runs at 0300 UTC, which means that if it got 100 on Friday, the badge wouldn't be awarded until the next day.

@msh210 I'm not complaining. We've gotten some great questions so far this year! Including one that's going to make me reread from the book of 'dis guy Zaphod to back up an answer. :-)

Unless this was the first PTIJ HNQ, having an answer score of 16 and all.

Q: Why did Rabba have to get up to kill Rabi Zeira?

user6591The gemara in Megila 7b says קם רבה שחטיה לרבי זירא Rabbah got up and killed Rabi Zeira. Why did he need to get up? Rabi Zeira was a short man, as we see in the bottom of Bava Metzia 85a קטין חריך שקי, and Rashi explains דאיניש גוצא הוה. This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be ...

@MonicaCellio :-)

4:12 PM
@MonicaCellio I've only read Hitchhiker once, and the library doesn't have the rest of the "trilogy". :(

@Scimonster my first exposure was actually the BBC radio show. I will always hear certain characters in certain voices when reading, because of that.

@IsaacMoses Used it. Thanks.

@MonicaCellio Isn't it like, kofer b'ikar to not read the books before watching movies / radio shows / other based-on media?

@Scimonster a friend handed me a tape and said "you've got to listen to this". So I did. Very soon after I read HHGttG. :-)

4:17 PM
@Scimonster Didn't the radio show come first?

@Scimonster no no, that's the tape, or maybe the Tape -- like the force it has a light side and a dark side and holds the universe together. That other tape, however, plays better in a Walkman. (Am I dating myself? :-) )

@Scimonster Young whippersnapper. I grew up listening to tapes and records. (We had an eight-track player, too, but very few cartridges for it, so I didn't really listen to it.)

@msh210 Ah, records! Like prehistoric big black CDs!

@Scimonster But more fun. You get to listen to the same line over and over and over again. (In case you've ever wondered where the phrase "like a broken record" comes from....)

4:21 PM
And of course radio is like TV without the pictures. And TV is only non-on-demand YouTube.

@Scimonster Actually, my grandfather had a radio with a band for TV. You could literally listen to TV without the pictures.

@msh210 That literally made me LOL. A literal "literally", not an exaggerating "literally".
Here in Israel, we have a radio station that's too small to do their own news, so they have a partnership with one of the TV stations. Every so often we hear "look at that" on the TV->radio news.

@MonicaCellio Not really, Sony's bringing them back after all (so that a new generation can enjoy the annoyances of cassettes)

@NoachmiFrankfurt Wow. I hadn't heard. Why is it doing that in these days of MP3s?

> Walkman is a Sony brand tradename originally used for portable audio cassette players, and now used to market Sony's portable audio and video players ...
Walkman is a Sony brand tradename originally used for portable audio cassette players, and now used to market Sony's portable audio and video players as well as a line of former Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The original Walkman introduced a change in music listening habits by allowing people to carry music with them and listen to music through lightweight headphones. The prototype was built in 1978 by audio-division engineer Nobutoshi Kihara for Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka, who wanted to be able to listen to operas during his frequent trans-Pacific plane trips. The original Walkman was marketed...

4:30 PM
@NoachmiFrankfurt they are? Wow. When's the last time anything was published on cassette, anyway? (We finally digitized all our "never republished on CD or MP3" tapes before they rot completely.)
@Scimonster oh. It'll always be that cassette-tape player to me; an MP3 player is different even if they reuse the name.

@Scimonster Ah.

@msh210, @MonicaCellio, @Scimonster, that was partially a joke

@MonicaCellio What software/hardware d'you use? We bought honestech's, but it stopped working at some point.

@MonicaCellio Don't worry about that too much.

@MonicaCellio, B"H I am careful to get that type of thing on record, I don't even have a working cassette deck.

4:33 PM
@msh210 Thank you for fixing that missing quote. It was bugging me.

@Scimonster, how long until your name returns to normal?

@NoachmiFrankfurt After Purim.

@Scimonster is that the end of your month? chuckle

@NoachmiFrankfurt Yup.
I changed it February 8th.

@Scimonster we bought an amp from DAK that came with software to produce the initial wav files. (I think it's Windows-only; we started this back when we were still using Windows at home.) We then used Amadeus Pro (Mac) to clean up the results (tape hiss, split into tracks, etc) and export to MP3.

4:37 PM
So, the Sunday after Purim is when i can manually put it back.

I forget what we used to do the MP3 tagging -- something with a bulk feature so we could tag an entire album with everything but track titles, then step through and do those. I can't remember if that's built into Amadeus Pro; it might be. Anyway, the $40 I spent for AP was worth every cent; I found it way easier to figure out than Audacity (which is free).

@MonicaCellio Would I also be able to use it with my LP's and 78s?

@NoachmiFrankfurt yes, anything you can plug into a stereo amp. We did cassettes and LPs.
I can look up exactly what we bought later when I'm home (you might need to remind me).

@MonicaCellio I was more curious about the software, my 3-speed phono has a USB output.

I'm pretty sure the tagging is built into Amadeus Pro, now that I think about it. That's what wrote the MP3 files in the first place, after all.

4:40 PM
@MonicaCellio After some practice, i found the process in Audacity to be pretty simple.

@NoachmiFrankfurt ah. Will definitely have to look that up (or, more likely, ask my husband what it was -- he did the initial import and I did the cleanup/MP3izing).

@MonicaCellio Does it export in other formats? I typically prefer Apple Lossless, FLAC, AAC, et c.

@NoachmiFrankfurt The wonders of modern technology.

But i don't have a Mac. Windows and Linux only.

@NoachmiFrankfurt there are other output options, yes.

4:42 PM
@msh210 Indeed. I can now buy a record and then download the same songs online instead of transferring it (doesn't work for my chazzanut, classical, and Israeli folk records though)
@MonicaCellio Thanks

@NoachmiFrankfurt You buy records??

@Scimonster I do indeed!

@NoachmiFrankfurt You must be the only one.

@Scimonster Nope. Here in the US, they are making a huge comeback. I was pre-ordering an album on CD the other day and I noticed that it also came in multiple LP options

4:45 PM
@Scimonster I've seen people claim that the sound is far superior to most digital works.

@IsaacMoses Not a huge fan of those. They're significantly more likely to damage your LP's and they'll completely destroy your 78s.

@NoachmiFrankfurt which "those"? I just picked that as an example of a recently-manufactured electronic turntable.

@IsaacMoses The Crosleys. I personally have an Audio-Technica AT-LP120, which I got as a gift a few years ago. (It actually arrived during Yom-Tov Pesach)
B"H I didn't need to sign for it

5:00 PM
@NoachmiFrankfurt B"H it didn't have any chametz in it.

Q: Why do we drink malt whisky?

CashCowIt's a Jewish tradition to serve malt whisky at simchas and to drink this also on Purim (in addition to wine at the seuda). From where does this custom derive? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah policy.

@Scimonster now this one's up there on HNQ, too, all three simultaneously above the fold (whippersnapper dejargonification). That may be a first for us. Also, coincidentally (?), we're "Today's Featured Site".
... meanwhile, it looks like DanF is trying really hard to make a non-ptij question get HNQed

@Scimonster ... and now a fourth, below the fold:

Q: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

CnsersmoitThe classic philosophical question: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? So, according to Purim Torah Judaism, does it? Sources please. ;) This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah...

I wonder if they arbitrarily decided to make MY the featured site today, and that's a partial cause of the increased exposure on the HNQ list. That would be a really funny coincidence.
It's random:

A: How is the featured site chosen?

OdedIt is a random selection from the list of graduated sites. So, conceivably, the same site could feature a couple of days in a row.

6:33 PM
Does anyone know what/and or if there is a policy in regards to downvoting Purim Torah answers? Is there such thing a a "wrong answer " or is downvoting against the spirit of jest and tongue and cheek answers?

@Nafkamina As with all other voting, the bottom line is that it's up to the voter.

@IsaacMoses do you think that is fair considering the question is a shtus to begin with?

@Nafkamina Personally, I upvote ptij that I find funny. I downvote it if I think it misses the point.
@Nafkamina Not sure what you mean by "fair."

Misses the point like what? Answering the question seriously?

... as with other content (and possibly even more so), I upvote a great deal more than I downvote.

6:37 PM
Fair as in there is no policy guiding the voter in deciding if a joke answer is considered correct

@Nafkamina That would be one way. Another would be saying something off-the-wall that doesn't seem to make any attempt at being clever or funny. If a question has some high-quality joke answers and some that do that, I'd rather not have the dumb stuff crowd out the quality stuff

So arbitrarily someone can downvote technically correct answers they don't like

@Nafkamina That's always true. Voting isn't just about correctness.

Agreed but I think if I voted down a correct answer because it didn't tickle my fancy I would be misusing my downvote power. But with Purim Torah even the correct answer is obviously incorrect ie. Play on words of psukim
Itvwouldnt be veiwed per se as a misuse. Thus flagging and other checks and balances are obsolete

@Nafkamina It's not just a matter of fancy. I might downvote something that's factually correct but that doesn't address the question well, or that is factually correct but phrased in a way that insults people, or phrased unclearly.
FTR, I'm providing my own point of view, but others have their own. Also FTR, I personally haven't downvoted anything you've posted recently.

6:42 PM
Why wouldn't a comment asking to clarify or phrase it better suffice if the poster is giving a correct answer

@Nafkamina That's a good thing to do, but it doesn't change the quality of the post.

Ok thank you. I wasn't asking about who downvoted me. I was wondering if it was proper for myself to downvote other answers
Being that there is no defined policy for downvoting

@Nafkamina If you think that an answer post causes more harm than good, in context, you should consider downvoting it.
@Nafkamina Like I said, it's entirely up to you.

What is considered harmful in your own opinion

Q: How are voyeurs treated in Jewish law?

eliyahu-gGiven that voyeurism by Jewish figures has been in the news, I'm curious. How does Jewish law traditionally treat voyeurism (if it does at all)? What is the punishment for voyeurism?

@NoachmiFrankfurt looks like 1-3 inches

@MonicaCellio was just a joke, I didnt realise the topic was so sensitive!
@DoubleAA I couldnt give two cents for my 100 points, dock them for all I care. I can them back in an hour if I am desperate. Regardless, I was making a joke, I didnt realise it was a touchy subject with the mods!

9:52 PM
Ancillary question to my above post: Should there be a cherem against the works of said figures? I suspect such a question would by inapropriate for MY

@Yehuda It's not the topic. I edited your question and flagged your answer because you were singling out individuals. Not nice.

@IsaacMoses I would have laughed had I been the mod mentioned out.
Wouldnt have taken it so to heart

@IsaacMoses I realise this is EY, but how is 1-3" considered heavy snow? We wouldn't close a school or university here for that!

Must be a tender spot for the mods.
I apologise
I wouldnt have done it had I known it would hurt them

@NoachmiFrankfurt Sounds pretty opinion-based, but you could ask about precedents, or something.

9:53 PM
@msh210 @DoubleAA forgive me. I really did not mean to belittle you guys, just to share a laugh

@Yehuda I have no idea how the individuals that you mentioned took it. It was inappropriate on its face, and in the mods' capacity as mods (and community members' capacity as editors and flaggers), it was appropriate to get rid of it.
3
@NoachmiFrankfurt Yeah, yeah. You Bostonians and your weather-readiness.

@IsaacMoses no problem

@IsaacMoses I agree. I don't know of any precedents and I hope that none exist. Cambridge changed their eruv to a different mashgiach as soon as this became public knowledge.
@IsaacMoses not so much readiness as I don't see how it can shut someplace down. I recall a story about POTUS learning that his daughters had a snow day when DC received a dusting.

@NoachmiFrankfurt Whether a place shuts down depends on its readiness. New England has the equipment and experience to take a foot of snow and keep on ticking. DC doesn't. Jerusalem certainly doesn't.

@NoachmiFrankfurt I don't think the snow's done.

9:59 PM
@IsaacMoses I'm not sure that even NE could stay on the ball with a foot of snow.
@Scimonster I'd love to see how much you end up getting.

@NoachmiFrankfurt Personally, i might get less than an inch. Jerusalem on the other hand...
And Mt. Hermon is really covered.

@Scimonster Where are you, if you don't me asking?
@Scimonster Well Hermon is snowy still during the summer unless I am mistaken

@NoachmiFrankfurt Below 400 meters elevation.
@NoachmiFrankfurt I kinda doubt it.

@Scimonster I'm not familiar with Israeli elevation patterns, so I even though I can picture that elevation easily, I can't figure out what type of weather results

@Scimonster At first, I read that as 400 meters below elevation and hoped that you like salt.

10:04 PM
@NoachmiFrankfurt We have year-round nice weather. Not too hot in the summer, and it hardly ever dips below freezing in the winter. Rainy winter though.

@Yehuda I made a point of commenting on your now-deleted post because I was not singled out. Regardless of how any individual feels (or would hypothetically feel) about being singled out like that, I don't think it is appropriate behavior bein adam l'chaveiro.

@Scimonster Oy, I know you're supposed to get rain, at least according to my siddur, but I would hate a rainy winter (I dislike rain)

@NoachmiFrankfurt Better than a rainy summer though, right?
Doesnt mess up all the summer fun.

@Scimonster Probably, then again, in the summer, at least around here, it regularly goes into the 30s (c) so I can't say how I feel about that.

@NoachmiFrankfurt Warm rain is better than cold rain sometimes, i agree.
