@Scimonster @MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses @Shokhet How are you guys running that Predictor query? Do you have a link to it?

5 hours ago, by Isaac Moses
- (2/2) this exists? (Apparently, has for quite a while.)
@Mike the first link there ^^^.

3:04 AM
@MonicaCellio Thanks

@Mike the thanks really belong to @IsaacMoses, who found it and shared the link with all of us.

@IsaacMoses A thousand curses upon you for showing me the flack generator
For those of you stalking me, I'm sure you noticed that my age in my profile changed today!

@YeZ I spotted it in a Purim Torah answer a few days ago -- it's fun!
@YeZ Happy Birthday! (assuming you didn't lie to SE about your birthday)

YeZ
@DoubleAA Good call. Done.

@YeZ The one birthday on which I can wish you a יישר כוחך

YeZ
@DoubleAA ?
something about שלשים לגבורה?

4:32 AM
@YeZ You aren't turning 80...

YeZ
maybe I should go look what שלשים is.
But I need to go to sleep, so just fill me in on what you meant.

you were roughly on target

YeZ
@DoubleAA Ah. It all makes sense now. Thanks!
TZT y'all

@YeZ Oh dear. If a birkat hedyot needs to be taken seriously, how much more so a thousand kelalot chacham ... on his birthday!

4:39 AM
@DoubleAA I'm pretty sure that we've already reported that Hebrew text breaks starred chat messages, right? ....this message shows on the starwall like this:
@YeZ, I'd like to wish you a 10, also :P ....if יישר כוחך minutes ago is gematriya, then I'm not sure it will be your birthday anymore
(that would be about 9 hours ago)
@Shokhet Now it makes sense. I have two answers in that tag, and one of them got me an Enlightened badge.

Q: Chat bug with displaying starred message in Hebrew

Alma DoI've noticed that there is a bug in displaying Hebrew symbols when a message is starred. Here we go: The message sample: Message is starred: As you can see, it's displayed wrong (I guess because of Hebrew direction).

I think that after @user6591's helpful edit, this question is perfectly valid and speaks to an interesting and fundamental issue. Thanks for asking it, Denise. — Isaac Moses 9 secs ago

Interesting coincidence: two questions, each by a new user, posted within minutes of each other, both prompted by To Pray as a Jew. Our first two questions ever to mention that book. I wonder if someone is teaching a class with that as the text and suggested MY for follow-up questions.
The author of the second question, following the link in her profile, is an interesting woman named Shira who, among many other things, blogs and learns Daf Yomi. This section of her website looks like a potentially very useful resource.
This post of hers would seem to disprove my class hypothesis.

@DoubleAA Are the following questions ambiguous as to whether what they're asking for includes NT? judaism.stackexchange.com/q/6245/2 judaism.stackexchange.com/q/38717/2 judaism.stackexchange.com/q/10344/2

@IsaacMoses interesting! Thank you for pointing that out.
I don't have the time+focus right now to write this up more carefully for meta, so I'll just throw this out here in chat for now: could we please try, especially on posts from new users, to tone down arguments amongst ourselves, nit-picking, and other off-putting behaviors? Absolutely do comment with questions or requests for the OP, but for the rest can we try to use chat sooner? Prompted by the comments here: judaism.stackexchange.com/q/53183/472

@MonicaCellio I removed some of the comments which "attacked" the op
@IsaacMoses No but the first one sounds a lot like just Torah to me.
In general, someone coming along with atypical terminology might just not be conveying the sense they desired, even if unintentionally.

@DoubleAA OK, I agree that the first one may refer to Tanach or may refer to the Pentateuch. Other than that, why are you more certain about the meaning of "Bible" in these questions than you are in this one?

@IsaacMoses The second says ruth is in the bible. the third says joshua is in the bible. And in general, someone coming along with atypical terminology might just not be conveying the sense they desired, even if unintentionally.

@DoubleAA The question at hand says asks why stuff other than the Pentateuch is in the Bible, which assumes that it is. That's equivalent to those inferences. I'm having trouble understanding your general statement. Are you suggesting that, in this case, OP might have meant something totally off-the-wall by "Holy Bible"?

@IsaacMoses Totally off the wall to your lexicon. Could be something like an Oral Law/rabbis question couched in these terms. Maybe something about printing haftorot/translations/commentary in the stone chumash. We have the ability to put things on hold and edit precisely so that we ensure the op gets what they want. closing isn't rejecting, as you know.

@DoubleAA Back in a while (second day in a row Mincha time arrives in the middle of an interesting conversation)

5:51 PM
@IsaacMoses Shouldn't have started the conversation then

6:21 PM
@DoubleAA I assume you mean se'if 3, in which case, I stand chastised. However, does se'if 4 qualify se'if 3? If so, I guess I'm in compliance. Also, I think se'if 4 would be another proof that Chazal had a sense of humor, in addition to R' Rakeffet's frequent citation of "Talmidei chachamim increase peace in the world" (Ber. 64a) as a proof thereof.
@DoubleAA I think (or at least hope) we can agree that any interpretation of natural language requires picking a context-dependent threshold for ambiguity and ignoring all possible interpretations whose likelihood fall below that threshold. Also that said threshold for SE questions is higher than one would apply in, say, conversation. I think we disagree about exactly how high to set that threshold and also about what likelihoods apply to various specific interpretations. ...
2
... I'm stating this very generally because this is not the first time you and I have had this precise form of disagreement. ("Shalosh regalim" comes to mind, but I don't feel like searching for it.) I'm not sure how to resolve these disagreements, since the points of disagreement, although I've expressed them in quantitative-sounding terms, are inherently qualitative and at least partly subjective.
In particular, here, I think that Oral Law and non-Pentateuch content in a Chumash (and all other interpretations) are sufficiently less likely than Tanach to be the correct interpretation of "Holy Bible" in this context that they are below the threshold.

Q: Should we edit or comment information that forms the basis of another's question?

ShokhetWhen I know what another user's question is based on, should I leave them a comment, telling them to edit this source into their question, or should I just go ahead and edit it? This question, at least in its first (current) revision appears to be one of those. The question asks Did Yael bea...

@Meta-Man @Scimonster I didn't want to point out anyone specific....but it seems that you got it anyway :)

@Shokhet I'd hope i would recognize a comment i made only a few minutes ago.

@Scimonster :)

7:49 PM
And i seem to have a badge on the way (at 5am)!
That'll be one per meta site (MSO, MSE, MSJ).

@Scimonster Congrats!

@Scimonster Correction: mevaseret.org/mmy

@Scimonster I just realized I need another 5 answers on MSE to get the badge :)

@Shokhet Go post them now. Then we can get them at the same time.

@Scimonster Right now I have to daven mincha. We'll see what I can do later....

7:56 PM
@Shokhet I don't even know what time it is by you. :P See you.

@Scimonster We have a slang term for that, don't we? :P ....see you!

8:22 PM
@IsaacMoses You were the one who originally said that internal link-only answers seemed alright. Do you still stand by that (in which case you might want to answer meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/3413/…)?

YeZ
@Shokhet I can find you some posts on which I have 9, and you could give me a 10!
@IsaacMoses Or one user didn't know how to log back into their account after closing the window.

@Scimonster Source?
@YeZ Doesn't look like that, in this case. Accounts are too dissimilar, and the first one came back and did other activity after the second one posted.

@IsaacMoses Source is that you posted the (now-deleted) answer. Didn't notice it had been deleted, sorry.

@Scimonster :) Just being difficult. I also replaced that answer with an answer that explicitly agrees with yours.

8:32 PM
@IsaacMoses I see.

hi guys! what is actually isur of being Moser?! http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/22/nyregion/4-ultra-orthodox-men-charged-with-trying-to-silence-accuser-in-abuse-case.html?pagewanted=all

And what does this mean that laws of bnei noach doesn't apply to us?!

@havarka Sound like potentially worthy questions for Mi Yodeya. In your second question, by "laws of bnei noach," do you mean "laws for the non-Jewish host country"? That's a different concept from "mitzvot of bnei Noach."

yeah, i mean if molesting is forbidden, do we have to keep it? :D It is a such ridicolous question...
