Q: Pirating software

SAR622I have heard from numorous people that there are opinions within Orthodox halacha that permit using pirated computer software. I have never seen this sourced or printed anywhere but only things like "I spoke to a rabbi once" or "my friend researched this extensively and it's ok.". Can anyone sha...

Q: Pirates and Torah

Clint EastwoodIn the 16th and 17th centuries European nations granted "letters of marque" licensing pirates to attack rival nation's ships. The major powers at the time were England, Portugal, Spain, and France which had expelled the Jews, and the Turks, Dutch, and certain Italians who hadn't. The main quest...

Q: Can I use a cutlass for a shechita knife?

ShokhetAhoy thar! I'm trapped on a pirate ship, and I'm so hungry I could eat a cow! Hey wait, we actually have one on board!! My problem is that the only sharp implement that I have is a pirate's cutlass. Can I use that to kill an animal in a kosher manner? Do I need to have a specialized shechita kni...

@TRiG I thought of this conversation when I saw this message:
Translated (loosely):
Title bar: The search is in progress, please wait
1032/1144 books have been searched
The string has been found in 1 book
The string appears a total of 1 times
....that came from a popular, free Jewish books search engine

Q: Have to repeat shmoneh esrei on motze'i Shabbat. Say "ata chonantanu" again?

DanielSuppose on a Saturday night, someone says shmoneh esrei with "ata chonantanu" but forgets another part that requires repeating shmoneh esrei (like ya'aleh v'yavo on chol hamoed). When he repeats shmoneh esrei, should he say "ata chonantanu" again?

How did GG close this all by himself?

@IsaacMoses He has a gold badge for dupehammers.

Q: Increase close vote weight for gold tag badge holders

Travis JIn order to increase the efficiency with which poor quality questions are closed, it could make sense to have weighted close votes for a small subset of qualified users. A very good way to measure the qualified users would be to leverage the tag badges. However, it needs to be rationally limite...

Q: When did I get close-vote superpowers?

John CondeI just marked this question as a duplicate all by myself. I am not a moderator and I don't think this should be possible. Did I miss something?

Q: How Can One Know If A Synagogue is Orthodox or Modern Orthodox?

Yochanan MichaelI've looked on the websites and, other than just going in and asking each and every local synagogue, is there some easy way to know if an orthodox synagogue is Modern or Traditional?

@Scimonster I thought I wrote that, actually. I guess I was wrong.

imgur.com/gallery/45wan. The options available would be, it would seem, (a) publish the photo as is, (b) don't publish the photo at all, (c) publish the photo with the faces of the women blurred out or otherwise completely obscured, (d) doctor the photo to make it look like there were no women there at all. Given this range of options, this Orthodox newspaper chose the last: they felt that lying was the appropriate action. Why?
Asking in chat for two reasons: (a) I'm too tired to write it up as a proper question right now. (b) I don't trust this community's response to controversial questions.

YeZ
@TRiG But you trust this chatroom's response?

@YeZ Noise bothers me less in chat.

YeZ
@TRiG I assume the answer is that it is less confrontational than (c), (a) was not an option due to their religious observances, and (b) would detract from the goal of their publication. If you blur them out, then you are leaving them there and showing you don't want them there. By doctoring, they were quietly removing them. (Not agreeing, just explaining)

Q: The practice of (not) printing pictures of women in magazines and newspapers under religious auspices

YishaiI was reading a My Encounter the other week (not available online) which had an interview with the editor of The Moshiach Times. In it he described how the practice of other religious magazines at the time (1980's) was to not include pictures of women (or girls) of any kind on the cover. The inte...
