@IsaacMoses oops -- I was sure I had pasted that in here before that comment. Let's try again:

Q: Using the word "Jew" before the Assyrian captivity

NoskatThis may be more a semantic question than anything else, but I'm wondering what the position is on using the word "Jew" to refer to Israelites before the Assyrian captivity. My impression is that the term "Jew"/"Yehudi" is used today because the descendants of the Kingdom of Judah are all that re...

^^^ This seems on-topic to me as a question about what term to use to refer to early Israelites. @DoubleAA, could we reopen and let the community decide?

@MonicaCellio We could call them Monicas if everyone else agreed to it. See current comments on the question. Lets see how that plays out before reopening.

Do you mean largest average time frame or largest single gap? The whole point is it shouldn't all be the same amount of time. — Double AA ♦ 2 mins ago
I don't know what he means and those are two separate questions. Put on hold as unlcear until he clarifies?

@DoubleAA Not IMO. Those are closely related questions, and a priori likely the same sources will address both. Certainly the same answers can address both.
(I'm not disagreeing with you that they're distinct questions. And if he clarifies what he means before an answer's posted, great. But if not, we can leave it as -- even edit so it's more clearly -- meaning both, and that, too, is a reasonable question post.)
@DoubleAA I agree. It's a question about English and Hebrew, not Judaism, AFAICT at the moment.

I was answering "yes" to your question. I wouldn't say that I'm asking about arbitrary conventions. — Noskat 35 mins ago
Hmmmm... Should we edit in "I am asking if there is some Jewish legal/philisophical reason to support using the term or not?" That would make it on topic, I guess. @msh210 @MonicaCellio @Meta-Man etc.
We also need to ensure that we don't create a dupe of judaism.stackexchange.com/q/14630/759

@DoubleAA I don't understand the question, so I'm afraid I'm no help here.
@DoubleAA I think that works. I'll do that and then reopen. (Bruce just made an edit that addresses the issue. Thanks, Bruce.)
I just noticed that it has 3 reopen votes, so it looks like there's some support for this.

@DoubleAA if you're going to edit my comments, please don't create spelling mistakes on my behalf

@YEZ ?? If I did I apologize and let me know so I can fix it. I thought I only removed parts because the thread was too long.

YEZ
@DoubleAA I fixed it already.

@YEZ How? You can't edit old comments

YEZ
@DoubleAA It was new when I edited it. Now it's deleted.

@YEZ ahh did I forget to turn 'by' into 'buy'? my bad

@DoubleAA It's probably what I deserve for picking on typos, but...
