Q: Is the last name Logan Jewish?

DorothyMy last maiden name is Logan and I want to know if I am of Jewish descent. Logan was my grandmother's last name and she was from New York. I attend synangogue on Saturday having always been drawn to Judiasm.

^ Questions about the Hebrew language or about history or news of the Jewish people, Jewish individuals, or the State of Israel, except as related to Judaism, are off-topic. If this question does relate to Judaism, please edit it to indicate how.
Thoughts, anyone?
@MonicaCellio Oh, I just saw this your chat post after posting the immediately above.

@msh210 In my profile, in the helpful flags section, some of the questions that I have flagged have a number after the question, like 1 or 2 or 4, and I've been puzzling over them to work out what they mean with no success. Do you know what they mean?

@MoshePeston Number of answers. (Hold your mouse over it, and it says. That's true many places on Stack Exchange.)

@msh210 Thanks - tooltips do not currently work in my firefox browser. Something got corrupted a while ago and I haven't found an easy way to fix it.

@MoshePeston Curious. Is it an issue OS-wide or just in Firefox?

@msh210 Just my ff - it works Ok in ff safe mode

6:46 AM
@MoshePeston Unfamiliar with safe mode; does that turn off extensions/add-ons/whatevers?

Probably one of my add ons but when I disable all of them manually the problem still exists. I would have to uninstall them to find out which one it is, but 'til now I have just learned to live with it. - Yes, safe mode turns off the add-ons.
Safe mode seems to do more than manually disabling all of them.

@MoshePeston Weird.
@MoshePeston maybe try support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/…?

@msh210 I'll probably get round to fixing it one day. One of my add-ons stops me from opening a new tab manually, but it's a very important add on which I can't do without, and I've had no response from the support team of that add-on (Its my shlomokluger toolbar which use tens of times a day!)
@msh210 This "community" bot/script which bumps old questions - according to the community profile it's supposed to do this every hour (when things are quiet I think) but this does not appear to be the case. Also, are the choices of questions random - I seem to be seeing many repeats.

@MoshePeston I don't know much about it. The questions are chosen among a small set — I think it's questions without any net-positive-voted answers but am not sure. I don't know how it chooses questions from that set, or how often it does so.

@msh210 OK. The feature in principle is very good. Is it a local script of all of SE?

7:00 AM
@MoshePeston SE-wide.

I checked a few of the bumps on the front page and this does not appear to be true!

Q: Is there a 3d walkthrough tour of the beis hamikdash online?

not-allowed to change my nameI have seen a few very brief videos that present 3d walk through tours of the beis hamikdash (usually the 2nd bayis). I would like to know if there are any extensive, thorough such videos available for free online.

^^^ for example

@MoshePeston That one's bumped because of human activity, not because of the bumping script. Specifically, an answer was posted (and has since been deleted, but the question remains bumped).

@msh210 Ah, right - I flagged that one for spam.
@msh210 I think that for our site a wider range of questions should be bumped.

Q: Calibrate the Community user auto-ping feature

Charles KoppelmanOne of the things that the Community user does is: Randomly poke old unanswered questions every hour so they get some attention Is there a way we can make this less random? It seems like it's always poking Purim questions around Sukkot, or Noach questions around Shavuot. Is there a way we c...

@MoshePeston Is that^ something like what you had in mind?

@msh210 Not quite - Since this is a Torah learning site. I would like to see all questions, except those with a very negative score, randomly bumped.

@MoshePeston Answered ones, too, you mean?

@msh210 Yes, or to learn from the question/answer or to inspire viewers to give a better answer - steal the checkmark! Although on reflection there is a downside to this proposal in that more recent content would quickly be pushed off the front page. Speaking of which, I have noticed that this same problem occurs when you or other mods do some minor editing, like tags, the resulting bumps means that recent stuff is pushed down/off the front page.
I guess it's just swings and roundabouts.
Gain here, lose here.

Q: It should be possible to retag a question without bumping it to the front page

MatthewWhile bumps are generally good, there are niche cases where they are harmful: I recently decided I would consolidate two tags on Stack Overflow: "openoffice" and "openoffice.org". They refer to precisely the same thing, and having two tags for them just fragments the organizational structure. H...

Q: Button for mods to not bump a question on a retag

Mark HendersonI really, really want to do a mass cleanup of the vmware on Server Fault. There are > 100 questions that need to be re-tagged, and there's no one-size-fits-all merge that I can do. I realise there is a feature request to stop flooding the front page with retags (see here and here for similar, bu...

@MoshePeston It's important to have edits bump a question, so those edits can be monitored. That minor edits by a moderator not bump a question is the idea behind the two feature requests I just linked to.
@MoshePeston I suspect most people don't want to see completely random questions more than they want to see the questions that are now bumped (e.g. recently asked ones); those who do can type http://mi.yodeya.com/q/[any number] into their browser. :-)

@msh210 Maybe there could be a 'Random Question" button?

@MoshePeston Maybe there should. Upvote this feature request, if you like, and see its top-voted (and accepted) answer:

Q: Random question button

Greg HewgillWikipedia has a "Random article" link on the front page that makes it easy for people to start exploring. It would be interesting to have something similar fro SO, perhaps with an additional (optional) constraint for "unanswered" questions. This might help eventually provide some attention to lon...

I should go, @MoshePeston. Have a good day.

@MonicaCellio This answer: judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/20279/… links at the end to a website which has previously been discussed here as being one which is loathsome and which we avoid linking to. Could you please do something about it in your nice diplomatic way?

@MoshePeston thanks for the compliment. :-) Looks like @msh210 beat me to it (thanks). BTW, feel free to edit yourself if you see this problem; you can use msh210's edit here as a model. And he's right that we should have a meta post about this; care to create one? (The question should be along the lines of "what should we do about links to this site?" and you can self-answer with a proposal to "edit them out".
This way the community can express its will through votes, which are a little more meaningful than chat stars.)

Q: Closing back-doors to deleted content for halachic reasons

NBZThis question has been deleted, but is still available through a click in a comment. Furthermore, the closed question puts attention (first link) to content who's author deleted it on halachic grounds. Should I delete the comment to respect the author? And this meta question too?

Q: Misleading tool tips on Meta

NBZVotes on Meta often signify agreement/disagreement on content and not research-usefulness-clarity. Shouldn't the tool tips match that, so newbies like me won't get confused? I suggest "I support the idea of this question"/"I oppose the idea of this question".
