Can anyone provide a better translation for this than Google's?
"Competition - read the first sentence and try not neighing"

3:52 PM
@IsaacMoses "Contest - read the first sentence and try not to snicker"
I think.

@HodofHod Makes more sense than "neigh." Thanks

@IsaacMoses Yeah, I don't actually know Russian, but "neigh" and "snicker" are etymologically related, so I'm guessing..

@HodofHod In Russian, or in English?

4:14 PM
@HodofHod Can you write/find the idiomatic equivalent of "fair enough" in Russian?

@IsaacMoses In English.

@HodofHod Do tell.

@IsaacMoses I can ask my dad tonight, but I wouldn't have any idea.
@IsaacMoses Eh. But see for example this translation:
It's not the same word he used, but I think it shows a relationship exists.
They're also onomatopoetically related. :D

The question of the internal consistency of the Bible concerns the coherence and textual integrity of the biblical scriptures. Christianity and Judaism consider the Bible and Tanakh to be divinely inspired. Disputes regarding biblical consistency have a long history.The church father Origen replied to the writer Celsus, a critic of Christianity, who had complained that some Christians had remodelled the Gospel to answer objections, admitting that some had done so. Among the classic texts which discuss textual inconsistencies are The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine, the Tractatus Theologico...
Umm... Not sure how I feel about this citation (results in Footnote 14).
@HodofHod Cool.
@HodofHod Thanks, but don't worry about it.

NO! Burn it! Burn it with fire! And brimstone!
But seriously, that is very problematic.

4:31 PM
@HodofHod We could probably make it much better by editing it to refer directly to primary sources. Would take some work.

"free rom error," now that's just funny.
But really, I don't know Wikipedia's policy is in such things, but I have to imagine they don't think too highly of anonymous forum posts, which this is roughly equivelant to.

Not yet catching up on backread here, but...

Q: Shekhina - The Feminine Presence of God

ErikWould someone please speak of the feminine attributes of Shekhina? I particularly mean the belief that she is the feminine presence / version / alternate of God who dwells on the earth. In his article "Shekhina," as referenced by the Encyclopedia Britannica, Ilil Arbel, Ph.D., wrote, "The manif...

^ Is there a real question there? "Would someone please speak of the feminine attributes of Shekhina?" "I am seeking perspective". I wanted to close as "not a real question" but saw it has an upvoted answer, an upvote, and no closure votes. Thoughts?

@HodofHod Well, in this case, the author is an actual person with some credentials, but still, the primary sources ought to stand on their own.

@IsaacMoses "On the internet, no one knows you're a dog"

@msh210 Voted to close as Unclear.

4:38 PM
By that I mean, there is no assumption of credibility on forum or SE posts. SE communities ascribe value to people using real names, getting votes, and having reputation. But do those transfer to Wikipedia?

@msh210, I'm looking forward to your perspective on this WP citation when you catch up.

@IsaacMoses I'm looking forward to seeing what WP citation you're referring to -- but can't do it now. TZT.

at least claims to be a real person with real credentials, independent of SE rep

@IsaacMoses I know. But the point is, Wikipedia is ascribing the credibility to Mi Yodeya, not to Aaron.

... but is not presently cited as such, anyway.
@HodofHod Yes. That makes it worse

4:41 PM
@IsaacMoses That makes it terrible, I think, especially from Wikipedia's point of view.

@HodofHod Yes.

So, next step, should we wait for our resident Wikipedia editor (I'm looking at you @msh210) to look at it and possibly take it down?

A: Answers from the Trilogy as references in Wikipedia

OcaasiWikipedia's rules on Reliable Sources are in balance with policies on keeping a Neutral Point of View. This includes giving attribution for sources that might be expressing an opinion. So while it would likely be against policy to simply state something as fact and give SO as the citation, it w...

@HodofHod I don't think there's any emergency. I think someone should take the time to comprehend the subject matter and write a replacement for that citation that cites the primary sources.

A: Answers from the Trilogy as references in Wikipedia

Andrew GrimmGenerally, this'd be against Wikipedia policy on verifiability, as they discourage using self-published sources lacking editorial oversight. They do allow exceptions for people viewed as experts who've been published by reliable third-party publications. So Jon Skeet would be acceptable, becaus...

@HodofHod Yes, I'd say that's pretty dispositive of our case.

@IsaacMoses That needs to be changed.

6:55 PM
@DoubleAA Agreed. So now, I searched WP for "Mi Yodeya" and found three results: This one (to be fixed), one you did (thanks again), and this one (uhhh no).
@DoubleAA And now, searching for "judaism.stackexchange", found three more hits.
... all of which probably need removal or fixing

7:20 PM
@IsaacMoses That last one says it was added by an IP in Omaha, Nebraska. Interesting.

@DoubleAA I can't see how anyone would consider that content worthy of reference. There's one interested party who may have considered it worthy of promotion.

8:02 PM
@DoubleAA How do I 'draw' a line in an answer or question?
To separate content

8:23 PM
@MosheP. Use a string of hyphens

@DoubleAA Thank you

@MosheP. or underscores, if you prefer.
@MosheP. If you see a piece of formatting in an answer, you can try clicking edit to look at the code used.

@DoubleAA I am having trouble in my answer here judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/34006/yeshua-sar-ha-panim formatting the Hebrew that I quoted at the end. It needs to be aligned right and also to make it a quote. Could you please edit it for me?

8:39 PM
@MosheP. Sure. Also check out meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/q/88/759

Hi folks, just a quick note here to remind y’all that the yearly Stack Overflow User Survey is live!

We’ve edited the questions/answers based on your feedback from last year’s survey and suggestions posted on Meta.

As a small token of our appreciation, we’ll be donating $1 for each completed survey to your choice of of one of this year’s Stack Exchange Gives Back charities (look forward to an announcement soon regarding this year’s full donations).

As always, we’ll be posting the results here on the blog once the survey is completed. …

@DoubleAA The addition of ‏ doesn't seem to have made any difference!
To quote from the link you gave me:
I didn't know about this. Thanks. The one thing that this doesn't help with (aside from being pretty annoying to write in, even if you know how to do it) is getting the text to align to the right side of the page when it is in its own text block. – Yaakov Ellis May 17 '11 at 6:39

9:26 PM
@MosheP. rlm moved the punctuation to the correct side of the text
I now added in a > at the beginning of each paragraph to make it a block quote. forgot to do that last time.

@DoubleAA Looking better but still not right aligned. Maybe it cannot be done here?

Hats are so much better when you're gravatar is face.

@HodofHod This year, you can move the hats around with respect to the gravatar, so you may be able to find an arrangement that's more fun

@IsaacMoses I've just decided to go with the face.
chat's cache is always problematic, though

Ah! There we go!
