@HodofHod I always use mikledet.com when I'm not at my home computer which has the ability to switch between Hebrew and English layout
You can just type in the box, and then cut/paste

If anyone else is interested, I threw together an onscreen Hebrew Keyboard. Check it out and let me know what you think. Especially whether you think its convenient.

A: integrated hebrew virtual keyboard

HodofHodIt looks like you're trying to get a feature request implemented. You should totally drop that and try jQuery. ;) I've thrown together (in jQuery) a really quick keyboard userscript (installation instructions). It will insert a button into the post editor and into chat, that toggles an on-screen...

Welcome to Stack Exchange Podcast #51, with special guest Jeff Atwood and the usual suspects Joel Spolsky, David Fullerton, and Jay Hanlon. Today’s show was brought to you by Pan-American World Airways!

We kick off the discussion with a topic not on the agenda… which is reminiscing about who used to prepare the agenda on the old Joel & Jeff podcasts.

Site Milestones! Spaaaace is now in public beta, so you should check it out. We also closed the India proposal, after much discussion about the possibilities for location-based sites. …

The first paragraph would benefit a great deal from substantiation - from whom have you heard of these concerns? Can you point to them expressed in print? The second paragraph doesn't make sense to me: "inevitable"? There are no software development jobs anywhere within commute range of NYC that aren't in Manhattan? There are no software development jobs that one can telecommute to? And the third paragraph doesn't seem to follow unless you accept the first two paragraphs as being strictly true; this field would only be an issue if it can only be practiced in Manhattan, which is out-of-line. — Isaac Moses 55 secs ago
et seq. I don't like the fit of this question at all

@IsaacMoses Agreed
I voted to close as off-topic rather than unclear what you're asking

3:33 PM
@HodofHod Impressive! But... it's not working for me on FF

I can see a question along the lines of "how do I reconcile my professional training with living a proper Jewish life?" being a suitable question, but I agree that this doesn't seem to be what's happening here. I know lots of observant software developers in large cities; we'd need to see some support for the idea that this is a problem. I see a couple of close votes already so I'm going to close; Ramin, if you rework this in accordance with the comments here we can consider reopening. — Monica Cellio 22 secs ago

There we go - change line 142 to:
res = text.slice(0, start) + $(this).text().slice(-1) + text.slice(end);
this in jQuery expressions is not what you think it is.
@HodofHod you have no idea how happy this makes me
thank you!

@MonicaCellio Thanks
@Daniel On further thought, I agree with you.

Isn't judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/14436/… a duplicate of judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/11269/… . The distinction between "is it considered meat" or "is it considered kosher" seems a little thin, plus the answer there answers it.

@Menachem It could be kosher but not meat, kosher meat, not-kosher meat, or not-kosher non-meat. The distinction between the first two, at least, is certainly halachically significant

Hello everyone

@Charlie hi

@MonicaCellio Kol Hakavod to Ramin
@HodofHod You're the best.

@CharlesKoppelman Hm?
@CharlesKoppelman Back at ya! :D
@IsaacMoses Thanks! You're not so bad yourself; site patriarch and all. :D

@HodofHod 8P What have I done for you lately? (Don't answer that.)

@IsaacMoses What do you mean!? I'm getting lessons in software vending from you! (But seriously: I am. All of you)

5:46 PM
@MonicaCellio I just realized that this (in theory) could be useful on BH. Is there enough Hebrew used there to warrant it? Is there any Hebrew there?

@HodofHod This might could be written better by someone with more familiarity in the field, especially the first paragraph. Feel free to edit as drastically as you see fit. And to answer, of course!

@IsaacMoses Are there other answers to this question? rchern's scripts?

@HodofHod I was going to ask you to add BH once I got a chance to play with it, yeah. :-) Hebrew cut/paste from text happens a fair bit (and that's already possible), but I have often struggled to type a Hebrew word (or just root) in an explanation, or talk about different formations of the word (i.e. different nikudot), and I usually can't cut/paste my way to that.
@IsaacMoses indeed. Kol hakavod, Ramin!

@HodofHod Your two, so far, plus maybe some general SE ones (assuming they exist - Like I said, I'm not to familiar)

@IsaacMoses s/two/three
:D

5:57 PM
@HodofHod My bad. See? We need a catalog, even just for your growing list of contributions

@HodofHod there's a "insert canned comment text" one on StackApps that I've been meaning to play with -- not for full comments, but as a shortcut to some oft-used phrases like the one about registering. I came across it shortly before leaving on vacation and haven't gotten back to it yet.

@MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses Good point!

@MonicaCellio Ooh. A customized version could be useful for welcome messages, among other things.

Trying to set up shabbat hospitality on days that aren't Shabbat is hard.

6:32 PM
@rosenjcb Are you going to visit somewhere?
I find that calling the local shul ahead of time works just fine

@Daniel Yeah Silver Spring, Maryland.

@rosenjcb Ah, well there are plenty of Jews there

I got Shabbat hospitality for Friday through Sunday, but not for Wednesday and Thursday.

Oh I see
so you mean just hospitality :) not shabbat hospitality

So I called another shul that my friend recommended and they run a sheltering home, but their director recommended that I inquire about the sheltering home for potential Shabbat hospitality.

6:34 PM
@rosenjcb Are you looking for a place to sleep or a place to eat? or both?

@Daniel Preferably both, but we'd could get by with just sleeping.

@rosenjcb It's multiple people?

We'd just stay at a hotel near a shul during our stay, but it sucks being poor.
@Daniel A friend and I are staying.
So two.

@rosenjcb And none of the shuls were able to connect you with someone who could host you?
That seems odd

@Daniel Not for Wednesday and Thursday.
But we were able to get it for the weekend, God bless them.
We're currently trying to jerry rig potential lodging for Wednesday and Thursday, maybe that will work.
I don't care if we have to live off of challah and tablet k cheese as long as I'm not sleeping in the streets.
Awesome, someone just replied to an email and said they might be able to find us a home to stay for the week.

7:26 PM
All: Is it possible to see all of the close votes that I have cast like I can see all of the flags I have flagged?

@HodofHod Turns out, it wasn't a problem with the this but with innerText, which Firefox doesn't support. Instead FF needs textContext, but $(this).text() is browser-agnostic

8:15 PM
@Charles That makes sense. Another reason to use more jQuery and less JS

8:32 PM
@rosenjcb I have some connections there. When are you traveling?

8:47 PM
@Daniel user profile -> votes tab -> closures sub-tab.
@rosenjcb great! I hope that works out. I've only ever asked for Shabbat hospitality (not longer), but I had assumed that if someone did it could be found. Silver Spring isn't a tiny community, so I hope it's just a matter of them having to dig a little more.

@MonicaCellio Ah thanks

@IsaacMoses yeah, that's what I was thinking. And on another site, there are 2-3 common mistakes new users make and I want to mock up comments for those, but we don't have that situation here.

Q: How Avraham could receive the Divine Presence?

juanoraHow Avraham was able to receive the Divine Presence if he was not in Eretz Israel and had no brit milah?

Any reason why that question is still open?

@HodofHod one more suggestion - use a nice-looking א or "he" in a box for the keyboard

9:09 PM
@SethJ This Wednesday. We had to postpone it for a while so our planning isn't exactly top notch.

9:52 PM
@CharlesKoppelman I wanted to, but unfortunately, it causes all kinds of css problems. I haven't found a font and weight and size and padding that works.

2 hours later…
11:25 PM
@HodofHod Well, you have three scripts, no?
@HodofHod Oh! It's U+2328. Neat. I'd assumed it was a picture.
