@Harel13 (cc @DoubleAA) It’s my understanding that in the early Achronic period in Ashkenaz/Lita there were basically two levels of ordination – Chaver (which means that you know halacha) and Moreinu (which means that you’re learned enough to be accepted into the Rabbinic elite).
It’s my understanding that “Rav” at the time was a colloquial way to refer to someone who you had respect for; that meaning morphed into today’s “Reb,” and “Rav” today is anywhere between a “Chaver” and a “Moreinu”, where who gave your semicha is what determines how much weight to give it.
