@DoubleAA I understand. It seems like the implied answer, which comments have hinted at, but which no one has explicitly stated, is that if one finds oneself with a candle, an uncontrollable sleepiness, and an animal and cannot find another option, there might be a place for extinguishing the candle;

But in most situations with only ordinary sleepiness, or if one had thought about it ahead of time and had an opportunity to prevent the situation, or if there is another way to deal with the animal; then one of the other, better ways to handle it must be followed.

@Mike I would expect (but have no sources) that you'd be expected to try anything that could solve your problem without you taking direct action first, like opening a window in case there's a breeze, or sitting in front of the candles singing songs with lots of plosive syllables, or... not sure what else.
