He's concerned about poor midot on SO turning people away from the field of programming. As SO is ubiquitous in contemporary programming, that's a real danger, stronger than, say, poor midot on MY turning people away from Judaism. That said, we do indeed represent Judaism on this little corner of the Internet, so we, too, bear a serious responsibility to behave exemplarily and to be deliberately welcoming.
