Polls close in about 16 hours. If you haven't yet voted in the moderator election and want to, your time is running out.

4:06 AM
I'm not sure why @mevaqesh is acting so rudely on this forum, it is definitely ruining my experience hwew
here*

4:35 AM
@TrustMeI'mARabbi If a comment is rude or offensive, flag it. Simply complaining about other users does not really give anyone the tools to solve a problem; real or perceived. Flagging is the correct approach, rather than a variety of other options such as ad hominem attacks or serial downvoting. Remember that posts should judged not by their posters, but by their contents. If a post or comment makes a valid point, it doesn't matter who posted it.
If it is incorrect, it similarly shouldn't matter who posted it. Remember that addressing the content of posts, is not in and of itself rude. Hopefully we can all work together to produce quality content, without compromising the content of our characters.

@TrustMeI'mARabbi I'm not sure why you're posting that here. If you have an issue with a comment or post or user that needs moderator attention, flag it. Public name calling doesn't help anyone, and is itself rather rude.

That said, everyone should always remember to be nice here on Mi Yodeya.

4:56 AM
@TrustMeI'mARabbi I have the same question and I never received any answer I see that the only thing that moderators can answer is "be nice". I am helpless and hopeless
@TrustMeI'mARabbi I understand you, I approve your post, and I know that because of this I will perhaps be excluded from the site

@DoubleAA In neither, really. (I'm not caught up in this room and am here merely to reply to that one message.)

@TrustMeI'mARabbi, @kouty (CC @mevaqesh), it's fine (and good) to provide constructive criticism of content, but please avoid making negative comments about other people. If you see something rude then flag it, remembering that disagreement itself isn't rude (but can be expressed rudely).

4:15 PM
@kouty @TrustMeI'mARabbi Bear in mind that when you flag posts or comments, that can result in moderator actions that you might not notice or ever see. I realize that that's unsatisfying, but mods' goals in responding to flagged behaviors are to deal with the behaviors and, if necessary, patterns of behaviors, not to provide satisfaction to the person who flagged.
(At least, that's my understanding. I'm not purporting to speak for the mods.)
Sefaria is putting up a new edition of the Talmud with heavy linking and the English and Hebrew translations from Steinsaltz/Koren, all CC-licensed. So far, 22 tractates have English, and the rest of the English and Hebrew translations will follow. This is, IMO, a really big deal for us, since this will be, AFAIK, the first complete, online, deep-linkable, Aramaic/English Talmud.

@IsaacMoses turning a deaf ear would not help.

@kouty I'm neither advocating doing so nor saying that anyone does.

5:36 PM
@Isaac Moses thank you.

6:09 PM
@mevaqesh there are more civil ways to be making comments. I am sure I am not the only one on this website who would appreciate people not speaking sharply. You are invited to see my other SE network connections and the civility is much better.

@TrustMeI'mARabbi. 👍

Ten minutes to election results. I'm so excited! No matter which of our three great candidates wins the diamond, Mi Yodeya wins!

8:03 PM
@MonicaCellio Haven't seen an official announcement but the data file is now available. I didn't run the simulation but from the looks of it @IsaacMoses is the run away winner
can't say I'm surprised :) Mazal tov!

@Daniel I ran the ballot file through OpenSTV and see the same thing. Waiting for the official announcement.
Of 105 ballots, 79 had Isaac as the first choice. Mazel tov to @IsaacMoses, and thank you to @Daniel and @Scimonster who are also worthy candidates and great contributors to Mi Yodeya!

I voted for myself, but actually thought very hard about voting for @IsaacMoses and/or withdrawing from the election as I believe he (or maybe she; who knows) will really be a fantastic moderator.

@Daniel I am glad you didn't withdraw. (In our first election, by the way, I voted for myself second, not first.)
(And yes I would have been embarrassed if I'd been eliminated with 0 votes. :-) )
Ah, there we go -- official announcement (which I know Meta-Man will onebox in here eventually).

@MonicaCellio @Daniel Thanks and beruchim tihyu! I sincerely agree with @MonicaCellio that Mi Yodeya would be very well-served with either @Daniel or @Scimonster in this role. Thank you very much, guys, for your willingness to serve and for your thoughtful participation in this process.

Also, let's remember that some of the questions (and answers) in the questionnaire suggested the need for some further meta discussions, most immediately about Purim Torah, and it doesn't require a diamond to start those discussions.

8:10 PM
@MonicaCellio Interesting. If my understanding of the algorithm is correct, though, second votes are much more important in elections with multiple seats available

@IsaacMoses Congratulations Isaac!

In this case, Isaac met the threshold in the first round and second and third preferences weren't considered

@Daniel indeed.

It was great to have the opportunity to run, and I would have been satisfied with any of the candidates. I'm sure you'll do a great job.

@Daniel had there been two seats, however, all of Isaac's excess votes would have been allocated to second choices.

8:13 PM
@MonicaCellio Right. And if Isaac hadn't achieved a majority of the votes in the first round, one candidate would have been eliminated and that candidate's voters' second choices would have been applied

@Scimonster Thanks!

So @IsaacMoses what's your first mod action gonna be?

I see flags!

Have a post you've been itching to delete?
Maybe a user you've been waiting to ban for months?
jk jk

@IsaacMoses also, some new tools since you last had a diamond! (Your chat profile hasn't synced yet, but Teacher's Lounge awaits you.)

8:17 PM
@Daniel Got any requests?

@IsaacMoses Just don't suspend me
I like it here

8:31 PM
@IsaacMoses Bet you miss that now

Isaac Moses doesn't have a diamond! Looks weird.

Q: 2017 Community Moderator Election Results

@Daniel I just made a tag into a synonym of another tag
Weeheee!

@IsaacMoses would you like the honor of updating the parsha events for the next little while? :-) (I usually do 'em a sefer at a time, but it looks like none of us got around to it for Sh'mot yet.)

@MonicaCellio Okiedoke. I did Beshalach. Will do more later.
@MonicaCellio and @DoubleAA thank you very much for the kind and thoughtful endorsements you wrote for @Scimonster, @Daniel, and me.

@IsaacMoses @HodofHod is there a sefaria flag for gemara in the referencer? and is there an english flag for gemara? i seem to recall there was one for rambam or something.

@DoubleAA There never was a good target for English Gemara, AFAIK
@DoubleAA Daf links into Sefaria are less useful, since it's not showing the pages in their standard format. It's more useful to link to the particular passage there, which is harder to come up with a way to specify for an auto-generator

10:02 PM
Congrats @IsaacMoses!!!

@Shokhet Thanks!

All we're lacking is @WAF
and @HodOfHod.

Last time we had 68 ballots, but this time we had 105. That's more than a 50% increase in active Yodeyans.
Oddly, 15 of those ballots (>10% !) only have choices for first place. They didn't mark second and third choices. Maybe the system isn't clear enough? I thought it was pretty clear.
If you run it through for a second place finisher (the single round it took Isaac to win didn't let any of the second place voting show) you get:

2| 35.000002| 25.696202| 38.177214| 6.126582| 7.261602| 32.957807

@TrustMeI'mARabbi As @DoubleAA said, if something is offensive, it should be flagged. If you find that some posts or comments, are irritating, but not actually offensive, by all means please make note of them. I try to constantly improve in my capacity on this site (as I hope all users do), and polite dialogue can facilitate this.

11:48 PM
@mevaqesh I recommend trying to take such meta-meta discussions to chat, either here or in a dedicated room, since they don't tend to be directly useful toward improving Q&A content
